Did you know that Vanuatu is the world’s most vulnerable country to climate change? To protect its rainforest, reduce emissions and generate income and livelihoods, Ser-Thiac, an indigenous landowner business, set up the first accredited indigenous-owned rainforest carbon project in the Pacific Islands. Ser-Thiac’s model is unique in that it seeks to balance traditional customary ways of sharing wealth and decision making with modern business rules. #EquatorPrize @NakauProgramme Big Congratulations!! 👏👏

#EquatorPrize2019 : Have you ever heard of Tamil Resources Conservation Trust in Yap, Micronesia? It’s one of the #EquatorPrize 2019 winners! As climate change affects the communities and ecosystems of the Pacific, this organization fosters ridge-to-reef climate resilience through watershed-wide restoration, family farming, a community nursery, and systematic marine conservation planning. A huge congratulations on their work which showcase innovative, nature-based solutions for tackling climate change, environment, and poverty challenges.

‘Don’t just think outside the box – think like there is no box!’ #UNDP supported Youth Speak Forum Fiji in Suva and Nadi which was focused on #SDG8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth. We engaged the Forum participants in a session on #entrepreneurship , #innovation and #leadership , that is designed to identify key issues, come up with solutions, foster collaboration and inspire young people to take the action. At the Suva Forum, two amazing young women – Nakita Bingham who won the first @YouthCoLab Fiji and recently returned from the Vietnam Regional Summit with another prize and Sovaia Liku, the winner of the second Youth Co:Lab Fiji Social Enterprise award, took part in #WomenInBusiness panel discussion. Young people and especially young women are the force that will lead the world towards achieving the #SDGs. However, they are often excluded, unheard or not taken seriously. UNDP is committed to #InclusiveGrowth and engaging underrepresented and vulnerable groups in development solutions.

Youth Co:Lab #ICT track winner Vineet Singh presented his project — Edu Fiji — to the audience of regional #telecom top managers, government representatives, IT and business professionals. EduFiji is a web and mobile app for connecting primary and secondary schools, students, parents, teachers and Ministry of Education for easy communication, information sharing, transparency as well as #AI - and #machinelearning -based data analytics. UNDP has supported the Pacific Islands Telecommunications Association annual conference happening this week in Fiji. With around 300 delegates from Asia-Pacific, the USA and Europe present, we were able to meet and discuss future collaboration with many private sector companies, organizations and researchers. @youthcolab Fiji participants and #InnovationHub users benefited from attending the workshop sessions and networking with local, regional and international PITA members and conference visitors. #ICT4dev #NextGenUNDP

#InnovationHub is here to support #entrepreneurs in Fiji and the Pacific, especially youth and women, and to accelerate the achievement of #SDGs through #innovation. Last week the second @youthcolab Fiji was held at the Hub, where participants from all over the country showcased their social enterprises, business ideas and ICT-solutions. Sovaia Liku, a 26-year-old law student at the University of the South Pacific, has won the SDG-based enterprise competition. Originally from the Western Division, she came up with the business idea to use shipping containers to create sustainable and cost-effective homes. Sovaia was motivated by first-hand experience with #TropicalCyclones , which cause widespread devastation and leave families homeless. Her technology provides a cheaper, easier and more #resilient way to build houses. This project targets vulnerable groups, such as people in remote villages and islands, young families and especially those living in disaster-prone areas. Sovaia says ContainX will be as eco-friendly as possible as they will use materials that won't harm the environment. She wants the houses to be affordable and strong, and to have renewable energy as its main power source.

Meet these 3 amazing women from the Galoa Village. They successfully completed a 2-day Plastic Repurposing workshop launched by @southpacifictourism in partnership with @undp_pacific and @thefijisharkdive. The workshop provided hands-on training how to convert discarded plastic bottles into jewelry and artefacts. This will allow the creation of income generating activities for the Galoa women while helping them understand their role in caring for their environment. #sdg5 #genderequality #iwd2019 #balanceforbetter
