@radicallytender  #americawillbe: designing our liberation, an altar for our dreams.

#americawillbe : from nick speed . in my dream of liberation, america will be... rehabilitated. in order to achieve a magnificent metamorphosis, this country must confront a savage, violent past and dismantle the myth that is the american dream. the “home of the brave” must never forget that we are also the home of racism, terrorism, homophobia, transphobia, and rape culture. this process will be extremely painful, but it is our only option if we are to survive. we can’t afford to keep putting band-aids on our gunshot wounds... . for more from nick, check out the link in the bio.

#americawillbe : from jae shepherd . in my dream of liberation, america will be free. free from cops, jails, and all institutions that keep black folxs in chains. free from capitalism. free from trauma & it’s everlasting effects on mental & physical health. free from the violence of toxic masculinity, white supremacy, queer & transphobia. free from the constraints of the gender binary. in my dream liberated america i will be free to walk down the streets without a shirt or binder just these trans titties outcha chillin without my blessed body being violently gendered and sexualized. in my dream of liberation, america will be uncolonized. a safe and affirming home for black folxs not just to exist but to prosper, be soft, happy, healed, and whole. in my dream of liberation, america will be rooted in the deep transformative magic of black love.

#americawillbe : from kristen trudo . dear nana, in my dream of liberation, i think of you. i think of us. the possibilities of who we will be. dear nana, in my dream of liberation, somehow you aren’t dead anymore. and the universe will gift us with more time. dear nana, in my dream of liberation, maybe we are sitting together on the couch, sharing an intimacy we never had - your gentle laughter and my own making music in my parents’ home. maybe you’re holding me as i move through my heartbreak - and i remember my worth. maybe you’re shuffling through a pile of tattered, fading, photographs - telling me all about the loves of your life. and when i hold them, i recognize the gift of cradling your world in my hands. dear nana, in my dream of liberation, i never internalized racism. white supremacy never seeped its way into my body. i never hated myself for being black. and i never thought you were less than for the same fact. dear nana, in my dream of liberation, i don’t carry this guilt anymore. because i recognized our worth and i told the whole fucking world about it. dear nana, in my dream of liberation, this shit isn’t just aspirational. black lives really do matter. and i really am worthy of being called your wildest dream. dear nana, in my dream of liberation, i think i believe in god or the universe or something good. or true. because america is no longer trying to kill me. and i am no longer suffocating. dear nana, in my dream of liberation, america will be free. and her freedom means my own. and my freedom means that i will see you and know you and return to you. and you to me, somehow.

what does “freedom” mean to you? from jacqui, july twenty-seventeen . >> i don't know, honestly. i could answer the question with a list of concepts, but in a tangible sense?--i'm not sure yet. imagining freedom is its own learned practice. we have to train ourselves how to imagine a thing that has been deliberately made unimaginable and inconceivable over centuries. i can identify the small moments where i've felt it, briefly. and i'm trying to lean into that, widen it, stretch it, make food out of it, dress myself in it--trying to see how big i can make it.

what does “freedom” mean to you? from jae, july twenty-seventeen . >> freedom to me is the end of oppressive power structures - the end of white supremacy, the police, patriarchy, the prison industrial complex, transphobia, capitalism, etc. it's seeing my people thriving and not just surviving. it's access to healing from systematic oppression and trauma. it's black joy & wealth. it's fierce self-love despite being taught by this world to hate ourselves.

what does “freedom” mean to you? from charles, july-twenty-seventeen . >> freedom to me is being able to breathe without threat of death from the state. to experience joy and love as a black person. to be able to thrive without feeling the need to sacrifice my own mental, emotional and spiritual health.

what does “freedom” mean to you? from brittany, july twenty-seventeen . >> freedom is power to be, absent of capitalism and greed. where people are prioritized. healthcare, housing, and food is not a privilege but a right. and crime need not be a symptom. as long as freedom is absent, america in all its patriotism turns a profit as the machine it is and none of us will win, and few of us are free.

what does “freedom” mean to you? from nick, july twenty-seventeen . >> i'm immediately reminded of a quote from nina simone, "i'll tell you what freedom is to me. no fear." we live in a world filled with unrealistic standards, norms, and expectations. simply having the courage to be your authentic self is a revolutionary act. . for more from last year’s photo series, link in bio. for new work, stay tuned.

what does “freedom” mean to you? from kb, july twenty-seventeen . >> freedom to me is the time and space where we all have the ability to experience ---- feel, touch, taste, smell, know---- liberation first hand. i know we are going to make it. it is indeed at hand. . this project, these reflections, remain as relevant as ever. and it’s that time of year again. more to come.

this is my friend lauren. she graduated three years ahead of me in college. and is currently living her best life in new orleans - falling in love with the city and its people and her partner. and i felt really grateful to share in some of that with her last weekend. in addition to taking creepily three dimensional photos on her iphone x, we spent last sunday making portraits of her. i’m excited to share some with y’all. be patient with me, sapp!

a week ago i was walking around studio be for the first time, and experiencing a breathlessness that felt so new to me. i had to remind myself to inhale. it was the most overwhelming and intimate history lesson; and i’m so grateful that brandan odums and his work exist. what a gift to all of us.
