On the occasion of Menstrual Hygiene Day, #reposting an excellent graphic by @green_humour on the available eco-friendly sanitary product options in India. Every menstruating woman on average uses and disposes about 7500 sanitary pads in their life. Each one of these would take between 500-800 years to decompose. There is already the uncertainty of the health impact of using plastic lined pads. Plus every time you make a purchase, you also have to buy the single (not even) usable plastic and paper packaging they come in. Essentially, you spend your money to pollute the planet (and yourself). Each @ecofemme #clothpad can last you up to 5 years. One #menstrual cup can be used for 10 years. Like every other established habit, this too shall take one or two cycles for you to get accustomed to. Do the math and choose wisely. Now that you know, make the switch. Week 12: Disposing of actual 'waste' properly We have learnt how we can eliminate, replace or repurpose things to reduce our household waste. Does this mean that once all these guidelines are followed, we generate zero waste? Unfortunately no. After eliminating 60% organic waste, 20% recyclables and 10% rejects, we still have about 10% toxic waste. As responsible consumers, we have to ensure proper disposal as our current waste management systems do not have appropriate solutions for toxic waste. Week 10: Inspire Others_Part 1: Your Near & Dear . . A frequently asked question is "How can I convince my family to switch to a waste less lifestyle?” . . 1. Start with children. They can adapt to change a lot quicker than adults. Start by teaching and inspiring your children to make informed decisions. . . 2. Then work with people of your age group - your spouse or partner, your friends, and colleagues. . . 3. Your parents, grandparents, and in-laws might be harder to convince but when they see everyone around them making efforts to change, they too shall. . . 4. Also, consider your pets. . . 5. Lastly, cultivate the habit of patience. Expect nothing to change overnight. But persevere and everyone starts to change. Read the blog for some ideas to get you started. Week 9: Inspire yourself_ Know your own waste 1. Try segregating your waste. We all know the basic categories - wet & dry. 2. Now, try sorting each item dry waste into - Paper & Cartons, Plastics, Glass & Metals, Don’t Know and Everything else. Because unfortunately, not everything can be bracketed into simply wet and dry. 3. Try doing a waste audit to find out how much waste your household produces each month, to track your consumption patterns, and to identify what you can cut down. 4. Test your waste knowledge. Pick up every single item, flip it around, and check for any indication of how it must be disposed of. Start noting & identifying the different symbols. 5. Kick yourself for not knowing all this already. To be able to adopt a NO waste lifestyle, you have to kNOw waste. Read more on the blog. Composting is a natural process by which food (greens, discards, scraps, leftovers, bones, etc.) and leaves/twigs/roots (browns) are broken down by macro and microorganisms and converted into nutrient-rich manure. This manure is then returned to the soil to make it fit to grow more amazing food. . Composting takes care of 60% of the waste that a household generates. If you don’t want to get your hands dirty and compost yourself, give your organic waste to someone who does. . Read an easy guide to composting on the blog. Link in Bio. . If you work, have to manage your home and family, are a social butterfly or are just plain lazy most days, make friends with your freezer. . Practically everything can be frozen. Cut up fruits and vegetables, spread on a plate or baking tray and freeze. Once frozen, you can store them in individual containers. Create pulps and purees. Week 8: Food_Part 3: Not Waste but Wealth . . A 2018 Economic Times article reported that "India wastes Rs 244 crore worth of food a day". Wasted food mostly ends up in landfills where they needlessly consume precious land and water resources and decompose to produce methane, a greenhouse gas. They also mix with other pollutants and end up back into the food cycle through our land and water sources. Truly, what a waste of such a useful resource. . 10 Ways to Ensure Food is for Eating, not Wasting . 1. Shop Smart. 2. Store and Use Sensibly. 3. Freeze. 4. Create a leftover meal. 5. Share surplus food. 6. Donate excess food. 7. Get innovative with kitchen scraps. 8. Feed scraps to animals. 9. Compost. 10. Set up a bio-gas unit. Read more on the blog. Link in Bio. Week 7: Food_Part 2: Storing Food Safely Preventing food waste is important but so is preventing waste from storing food. Plastic containers, cling film wraps, aluminium foil and ziplock bags often end up in landfills (either after one use or eventually). These products are not only a waste of money but also a waste of precious kitchen space, resources and more. And worse - they can be harmful to your health when used for storing food that is too hot or too cold. Read how to store food safely on the blog. Link in Bio. Week 6: Food_Part 1: Procuring sustainable food in 10 difficult steps. 1. Be willing to change (your habits). 2. Find time in your life to shop for (healthy) food. 3. Build your food purchase map. 4. Stop accepting anything that comes with plastic packaging. 5. Shop around your neighbourhood for local (or mostly regional) produce. Or better, shop at farmer's markets. 6. Convince and convert your grocer to fill your own containers or wrap your purchases in paper instead of plastic bags. 7. Learn to eat according to seasons and also to accept ‘ugly’ looking produce. 8. Walk or use public transport to shop for food locally. 9. Start a kitchen garden. 10. Attempt to eliminate shopping for essentials by making your own stuff. Remember, package free food is NOT the norm. It is likely that people might not understand what you are doing. The more people who make the switch, the more common it will become for stores and other shoppers and the more comfortable others will feel doing it. Read Blog for buying guides. There is no such thing as a perfect toothbrush. . Before you purchase your next brush (standard commercial or eco-friendly alternative), consider the disposal of all three components - handle, bristle and packaging. . . Most alternatives replace the plastic handle with bamboo or sustainable wood sources. The bristles are made of nylon 4 or bamboo or corn fibre or castor bean oil. Bio-degradable packaging is provided by most brands. So while the bamboo toothbrush is not 100% waste less, it is an alternative to conventional plastic ones. The 100% compostable toothbrush alternatives are using twigs of trees such as neem, babool or meswak. . And of course, the cheapest and most eco-friendly option is to simply use your index finger. Replace plastic bags with cloth bags. Yes, BAGS. Because one cloth bag is never enough. You are human. You will forget to carry yours. * A general rule of thumb is to have minimum three – one at home, one at your workplace and one in your vehicle. * Additionally, stuff one in each of your bags – purse, handbag, laptop bag, luggage bag, etc. * If you cannot remember to carry one, get a carabiner and hook the bag on to your key ring. * Cloth bags fold well and do not take up a lot of space. * They can be custom-made as totes, slings, backpacks. * Keep many bags near your door, your mobile, your shoes – anywhere that will help you remember to carry them. How many cloth bags do you have? #mywastelesskit #zerowastegoa #wastelessproject

Join an experimental, 12-week, open-to-all project to help reduce household waste. This initiative is for people who wish to move to a zero-waste lifestyle but are uncertain on how to start. Starting January 7, you will be provided one guideline every week to integrate into your daily life. The lifestyle changes might be easy to begin with but become incrementally challenging in the subsequent weeks. If you stick with it, at the end of 12 weeks you’ll be on the road to a life with much lesser trash (and stuff) in it. Note: This information that will be shared on each guideline will be mostly centred in and around Goa. Having said that, anyone can join in, share their experiences and spearhead the initiative in their own respective hometowns. www.wastelessproject.home.blog/ Register - https://goo.gl/forms/BYAIoNypBBvbJTYg2 Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/groups/wastelessproject/ #wastelessproject #zerowastegoa
