Our planet is one, big ecosystem and it’s important for us to acknowledge and protect it. The weakening of the Endangered Species Act limits protections for threatened and endangered species and makes it easier for industries to extract from our planet’s natural resources. Unfortunately, as the expected/current impacts of climate change become more prevalent, it can be expected that we will lose a grand portion of our planet’s biodiversity. The time to act is now. We can all play our part in ensuring a green and livable future for ourselves and future generations by voicing and acting upon our concerns to our elected officials. #beetheirvoice #climatechange #climatechangeisreal #protectwhatyoulove #greennewdeal #biodiversity #climatebreakdown #ecologicalcollapse #youthtopower #environmentaljustice #intersectionalitymatters #noplanetb #planetoverprofit #peopleoverprofit #protectnationalparks #thisiszerohour #protectindigenousland #climatecrisisishere #bepartofthesolution #believeinbetter

Posted @withrepost @phoebewithpluto I feel so strong about this, as I can’t drink without straws, I can’t even eat liquids half the time without either a straw or spoon (obviously on the spoon one) 🤦🏼‍♀️ #Repost @spoonfulsofkindness with @get_repost ・・・ Disabled people NEED straws // I want to share my opinion on this. I am by no means the most educated on this but I want to spread awareness. and this is a jumbled mess but I’m an artist, not a writer so hit me. A few reasons why disabled people need single-use plastic straws... • difficulty swallowing • issues with arm strength • unable to sit up Why disposable straws aren’t an alternative... • There is a high risk of the paper straw shredding and causing a person to choke. • The straw goes soggy super quickly. • Paper straws are unsuitable for hot drinks. Why reusable straws aren’t an alternative... • stainless steel reusable straws have a serious risk of getting stuck in a person’s mouth, causing permanent damage to their mouth. •With reusable straws, they need to be washed out thoroughly after each use. If straws aren’t accessible, people will die. Before straws were accessible disabled people would develop aspiration pneumonia from inhaling liquid. when you have an injustice or a moral issue you look at it through the victims' eyes. Disabled people are saying this is harmful, and we need to be listened to, not ignored. I am passionate about the environment and want to look after mother nature, and it sickens me what we do to the earth, but banning straws will hurt the disabled and is unlikely to put much of a dent in the pollution issue. I once thought that people were being over the top about this, that, of course, disabled people could use reusable straws, but then I realised that when a minority says something is harmful, you listen. because omg just a thought... they might actually know what’s best for themselves!🙀 thx for coming to my TED talk. ——————————🌼——————————

I’m still not 100% sure what poetry slam means, but this is the outfit I wore on the first day of @climatereality training. I came up with ideas and was going with “bloom where you’re planted” and making changes from where you are. I finally started writing it within 24 hours of performing it. I finished it as “blooming in adversity” talking about blooming in a monoculture and being considered a weed. I finished it 15 minutes before I performed it at the youth mixer Friday. Posted @withrepost @smugmorenita Immigration is a BIPARTISAN, FOOD, LABOR, VEGAN (yes, vegan), ENVIRONMENTAL & EQUITY issue. The raids in Mississippi broke my heart. I remember when my mom became a U.S. resident when I was 9. I remember her lawyer and the judge asking me if I was happy. I was 9 so I couldn’t really articulate the sense of relief I had that even if she wasn’t a citizen, she had **permission** to be in this country & I wouldn’t have to worry that she wouldn’t come home. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In light of recent news, it’s easy to point fingers & blame Trump but keep in mind immigration has and still is a BIPARTISAN issue. Dem’s are and haven’t been any better. Did we forget about the Clinton and Obama eras? I also wanna know where all the environmental & vegan activists are at among recent conversations concerning immigrants in the agriculture industry. Where’s the uproar? Especially from white activists. Where y’all at? Y’all sure like to hit my community up to lecture us on our consumption habits while simultaneously dismissing the issues behind access, labor, equity, and environmental impact yet are silent when it comes to immigrants in the industry? Whack. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have so much more to say and very little space but for now this is my contribution to recent conversations. Illustration inspired and dedicated to the CA strawberry field workers who like many others in the agriculture and food industry around the country, are the hidden faces behind the food we mass consume. ID: a basket of strawberries with a sign saying, “Immigration is a bipartisan food, labor, vegan, environmental, and equity issue“.

Posted @withrepost @kendriana.speaks @americahatesus One of my biggest issues with this White-washed environmental activist movement is the insensitive burden it places on POC communities to do an equal share of reversing the impact White supremacist capitalist colonialism has on the environment when POC haven’t committed any of the same mass ecological crimes. We’re told by people who are often complicit or passive about our oppression to use money we don’t have due to inequitable pay (that they often perpetuate) to buy reusable plastic kitchen bags under the guise of “less plastic waste” when we’ve already been storing our leftovers in the same set of Country Crock containers for the last 10 years. Telling us to give up foods that yield a high carbon footprint when we experience some of the greatest food disparities in the country🤔. • Meanwhile White owned companies dump their waste near our water sources, build their billowing toxic plants in our neighborhoods and transport garbage in metal shipping containers to Africa by the ton. As POC communities we can do what is in our means in addition to our existing work to reverse climate change but ultimately the fate of the movement and the responsibility of eco activists is to realize that much of the oppression that threatens green activist values has already taken Black and Brown lives long before the globe began to warm. ID: A text photo that reads, “Black Americans are 3 times more likely to die from environmental racism. Is your approach to environmental activism non-intersectional or oppressive?”

❕On September 14th 2019, OCV & Loam are coming together for a day of climate storytelling where we will workshop, cultivate, and share our personal climate stories and learn how to activate them for meaningful climate action❕ Storytelling has the power to change hearts and minds in a way that facts and figures never can. The climate crisis is, at it's core, a justice issue that is impacting each of our communities now. In order to truly grow and sustain the movement we need to create lasting and transformative change, we must understand the deep and intimate ways that this disaster impacts and threatens each of our lives. The strongest grassroots movements succeed when we understand how our stories intersect with our struggles for freedom and liberation, when we know intimately who and what we're fighting for.⁣ ⁣ With a deep understanding that it is imperative we each own our own climate stories, our workshop supports young people, and directly impacted & front line communities cultivate personal climate stories embodying principles of ethical storytelling in service of climate action. ⁣ ⁣ You can register now! Link in bio. Registration is limited to allow for a vulnerable, open and growthful space. It is important to us that anyone who wants to attend the workshop can so please let us know if someone in your network would like to attend and needs a fee waiver, and we will happily waive the registration fee. ⁣ Not in the Bay Area? No problem! There are sister events in 25+ cities around the world. Let us know where you’re based & we’ll connect you to the organizer! If your city doesn’t have a sister event yet, we’ll train you how to organize one ✨

This August 1, I recommitted to being vegetarian. I used to go back and fourth between vegetarian, vegan and reducitarian. I started this journey in middle school and I really didn’t know a lot about nutrition, I struggled with IBS, and then I had a lot of major lifestyle changes so my food budget and time for cooking has seriously fluctuated throughout all these things. The intention is to be vegan but I am not going to force my body to suffer if I am unable to meet its needs. I need it to be sustainable for myself. I am excited because I love plant foods and I love challenging myself to be a better person in different ways. This recommitment is something I’m taking seriously. #vegetarian #lowermywaste #journey #fortheplanet #animalfactoriesmustbecloseddown #unsustainablegrowth #food #meatfree #reducewaste #reducecarbonfootprint #dinner #airbnb #amazingroommates #recommitted #selflove #selfsustainable #leadonclimate #youthtopower

Today marks 1 year since the historic #YouthClimateMarch that took place in DC & 25 cities around the world. Back then we had no money, no notoriety and yet the movement we young women in the united states started was the first domino that led to the mainstreaming of high school climate justice activism that you know today. With nothing but determination and the internet organized the #YouthClimateMarch and changed the face of youth climate mobilizations forever. The day of the Youth Climate March, July 21st 2018, there was a rainstorm in DC. Everyone was drenched from head to toe and at one point it looked like our scrappy operation was falling apart. Our cries for climate justice seemed like they were drowned in the storm. But it turns out they weren’t. Soon after we dried off from the rain and opened our computers and the Sunday @nytimes , we realized that our scrappy little protest was the first match that sparked an international movement of youth for climate justice. Even when you’re just a teenager drenched in a rainstorm and it feels like no one is listening to you, someone is. Thank you to everyone who marched with us last year. That was our first mobilization, but certainly not our last 😉. #thisiszerohour #youthtopower

@usdagov has suspended data collection on the Obama-era Honey Bee report, the only federally overseen survey that tracks our nations pollinators. The suspension halts investigation and understanding of why honeybee populations are declining. Last winter’s colony loss was the highest in 13 years. The data collection is extremely necessary in helping restore pollinator populations and finding solutions to overcome neonics and viruses carried by varroas. There’s still hope to save the bees and other crucial pollinators, through the Save America’s Pollinators Act. Urge your representatives to follow through and defend and protect our nations pollinator populations. Your voices matter and can make a difference. Play your role and act as catalyst for change, not just for the bees, but also for the ecological breakdown as a whole. #beetheirvoice #bees #savethebees #noplanetb #pollinators #saveamericaspollinators #protectwhatyoulove #youthtopower #ecologicalbreakdown #change #changetheworld #protecttheplanet #planetoverprofit #savetheearth

Today I’m filming for a documentary about @thisiszerohour instead of celebrating the #4thofJuly because Im not about to throw a party in honor of imperialism 🇺🇸. The United States is a settler colonial state that was founded on the genocide of 90 million indigenous people and that is continuing our legacy of terror today by putting babies in concentration camps and torturing immigrants. The only pride I have in the USA is of the people who have fought to repair the damage and live up to that promise of “liberty and justice for all.” All we can do is recognize the damage that was done, fight for a better world, do our best to make reparations, and take action to save life on earth before it’s too late. Maybe some day the USA will be a country worth celebrating, but it’ll only happen if we all work hard to MAKE it worth celebrating 🎇. #thisiszerohour #youthtopower

Anyway, while we’re on the subject of my Jewishness, a reminder that antisemitism is still very much alive and it is everyone’s responsibility to stand up and fight for the Jewish community against continuos attacks. #youthtopower #thisiszerohour

For schools with endowments, how are we investing in the future world of our students? Students, keep on demanding action! Schools, let’s hop on the wagon! (Fun fact: As of fall 2018, Northwest’s endowment investments include ZERO fossil fuel companies.) #Repost @jamie_s_margolin ・・・ Please read this oped I wrote for @teenvogue ⛽️! I’m a rising senior in high school which means that college application hell is upon me. It also means I will be applying to schools that invest billions in the fossil fuel industry. Many colleges have fossil fuel investments, which means they are investing in the destruction of the futures of their students. Top universities are claiming to prepare students for a future they are ensuring won’t exist thanks to their investment in its destruction 🎓! Please swipe up on my @instagram story and read the full article, if you are a student this applies to you and it’s important we all demand the education system #DIVEST from the industry destroying our world 🌎! #thisiszerohour #youthtopower

These are pictures of me from my final keynote speech at @C2Montreal in front of 6000 people about @thisiszerohour and our #GetToTheRoots campaign. Speaking to a large crowd is thrilling to me, the bigger the better because that means I’m spreading the message to as many people as possible! Next year is my Senior year of High School and I’m gearing up to do leg 2 of my #ClimateTour. If you want to book me to speak at your event this upcoming school year, email the invite to jamie @thisiszerohour.org 🖤 #thisiszerohour #youthtopower

PSA ON TURNING DOWN COMPANIES! Don’t be afraid to say “no” to opportunities that will make you deviate from your cause. Over the past year I have had big corporations reach out to me over and over again with offers of lots of money, exposure, and boosting my profile in exchange for me advertising their products that harm the earth 🌎. These are companies that totally contradict @thisiszerohour ‘s messaging, have no history of environments activism, and that you have definitely heard of and shopped at before. I will admit I have at first been a little tempted to take these deals — I’m not going to lie: money, clout, fame, and VIP treatment sound awesome after years of slogging through the unglamorous world of community organizing. But each time I get these advertising opportunities from corporations that go against what the #ThisIsZeroHour movement fights for, I turn them down. Every time, I say NO. Because no amount of fame, VIP treatment, new social media followers, money or clout will get me to stray from the cause I fight for — it’s not worth it. We are in the 6th mass extinction and I’m not going to let shiny objects dangled in my face, like the possibility of exposure and fame, distract me from the cause. I am okay working with some companies, don’t get me wrong. It was awesome collaborating with @albabotanica and I’m excited about a potential @burtsbees collab coming up 🐝! I really want to work with eco friendly companies like @patagonia and @lushcosmetics too — the problem is not working with companies in general, it’s advertising for the companies that go against what I’m fighting for. So I guess the point of this long post is that while some corporate opportunities are fine, you need to be careful because other times companies get young activists to sell out (example: companies have for some reason tried to get me, a #climateactivist to advertise fast fashion, one of the main causes of climate destruction). No amount of fame is worth selling out and deviating from your cause. Keep your eyes on the prize. There are systems of oppression out there that need to be fought, a #climatecrisis to solve, and we cannot afford to get distracted! #youthtopower

I wrote a #pride Op-Ed for @i_d about how I became the radical #climateactivist I am today, and how that got me out of the closet 🏳️‍🌈. PLEASE READ this article if you are in need of some inspiration or an activism origin story to help guide you! Link is in my insta story. Here is a snippet, “For most of my life, I hid behind my ability to camouflage and ignore the problems around me because I was too scared and overwhelmed to confront them. Even though I’m the daughter of a Colombian immigrant, I hid behind my light skin and never flaunted my Latina identity, blending in with the white kids and only speaking Spanish at home when I had to. Even though I’m gay, I hid in the closet behind my femininity and kept my distance from the LGBTQ movement to avoid harassment and discrimination, benefiting from people just assuming I was straight. And even though I’m a young person who is inheriting a climate destroyed world, I hid behind the fact that I lived in the safe haven of the west Seattle suburbs, mostly shielded from the effects of the climate crisis and fossil fuel extraction.” #thisiszerohour #youthtopower

#Repost @ourclimatevoices ・・・ Last week was HUGE for climate history. The 21 young people who filed the Juliana v. This post is coming almost a month late, but I had the most amazing time speaking at the @c2montreal keynote panel. I was the only women on stage, the only young person, the only grassroots organizer, and the closest thing to having a person of color on the stage. Making my voice the loudest on a stage full of older white men is something I’ve learned to do often. When they try to cut me off and mainsplain me I speak up louder and spill the facts on #climatejustice and the systems of oppression that caused the #climatecrisis. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned from my #climatetour it’s that people everywhere are actually ready and relieved to hear the raw facts that @thisiszerohour talks about in our #GetToTheRoots campaign! Thank you again @c2montreal for the amazing opportunity and giving me a platform to speak to thousands, and for offsetting the carbon that it took me to get to Montreal! #YouthToPower #ThisIsZeroHour
