Did you know: Glomalin, a protein produced by fungi, acts as a “soil glue” to create stable soil aggregates (bacteria and microorganisms stuck to organic matter). Stable aggregates can sequester carbon in the soil. So the more “alive” the compost is that you apply to soil, the bigger the aggregates will get and soil will have stronger carbon drawdown capacity. As in, look at the size of the macroaggregates on our worm poop samples!!! We think this is a BIG deal. #glomalin #wormsrule #wormpoop #teamingwithmicrobes #livingsoil #blackgold #soilaggregates #vermicompost #soilscience #carbondrawdown #carbonsequestration #microscopephotography #microbiology #soilfoodweb

These are the “leftovers” after we sift the worm castings. Mostly woodchips, undigested leaves and some larger pits like avocados. WHAT WILL YOU FIND IN YOUR BUCKET OF WORMIES VERMICOMPOST? 🌟The vast majority of it is worm castings, alongside some particles of humus (organic matter) from decomposed material. 🌟You will also find an entire community of soil organisms. Many of them specific to West Michigan. 🌟There might also be a few baby worms and eggs. Nothing to be afraid of. They will either thrive and help your garden or die if your soil is too sterile. 🌟There are also the invisible guys, not noticeable without a microscope. Aproximately 1 BILLION bacteria per each gram, yards of fungal filament and thousands of protozoa and nematodes. 🌟Arthropods are the most noticeable and what customers ask us about the most! Those include: sow bugs, springtails, spiders, centipedes, ants. These are important recyclers transforming the organic matter and minerals into a more readily available form (more poop!) for the invisible guys (above). 🌟Having all of these organisms present in your soil will help keep their balance and prevent an overpopulation of one of them. #livingsoil #growclean #soilbiota #rolypoly #centipede #vermicompost #wormpoop #regenerativeagriculture #soilbuilding #westmichigan #cannaculture

It's all my fault! I'm so sad! I've neglected my vermicompost for the past 1 year... Literally found 0 adult worms in the compost bin. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Nothing at all inside. I'm on the verge of crying but... It happened before. I placed a new batch of dry cardboard in between moist worm poo. I'm hoping there's at least some viable eggs inside the remaining bits of vermi casting and hopefully a viable population of earthworms would come back. Please please please. I can't believe that I've been so negligent and was hoping that there were some worms when I came back to the parents today. Oh please please please come back... #TeamPixel #VermiCompost #WormPoop

As we’ve said, plants need to eat too and with the hotter temperatures approaching, soil supplements are a great way to provide nutrients for a happy and healthy harvest in the heat. So without man-made chemicals, how do you do this? Like most everything on the farm, we like to keep it local and organic. Morton’s Horticultural Products in Mcminnville, TN provides us with earthworm castings which is a great substitute for compost, neutralize pH and retain moisture. If reworking a 4 x 8 ft. raised bed for example, we recommend using 1-2 bags of worm castings to help replenish what your beautiful plants gobbled up over the season. A little sprinkling here and there wouldn't hurt either to give your bounty a boost. Stop by our farm stand Fridays or Saturdays (10a-3p) to pick up your farm fresh veggies and plant food too! #GrowEducateConnect #CrabtreeFarms #Organic #SupportLocal #WormPoop

I think this is a Honeysuckle Bush. It’s one of our favorite. When we moved here it was white and light pink. We started feeding it our worm castings and worm tea, now look at it. We were pretty amazed ourselves. #Wormpoop #WormCastings #honeysuckle

Did you know worm castings release nutrients already found in the ground and soil that were not available for use? Castings do this by speeding up the rate of decomposition of existing thatch and material and unlocking nutrients by their thousands of beneficial microbes, in return, giving you a lush beautiful lawn.

Working towards fungal dominant compost. This is a new worm pot. I like using fabric pots to vermicompost in. Worm pots contain tree leaves and branches straw and almost finished compost from outside. Outside compost is coffee grounds yard waste goat and chicken manure with bedding. #beyondorganic #vermicompost #wormpoop #blackgold #organicgardening #growyourown #knowyourfarmer #loyaltothesoil #notillrevolution #probioticfarmersalliance #wormfarming #regenerativeagriculture #sustainability #homesteading #permaculture

Anyone else use worm tubes to compost? We installed these last year and they really do work! We put food scraps in the top and the worms do the rest. The bed they are in is a perennial flower garden full of pollinator loving flowers. So we feed the worms, that feed the soil, that feeds the flowers, that feed the pollinators, that pollinate our food so we can eat. 😀🌼🐝

The first harvest of worm poop! We have been having our new flatmates for 3 months now. Having a worm compost inside a tiny apartment definitely not as messy or smelly or complicated as I imaged before, however, harvesting the compost took longer than I assumed. The worms were everywhere (they were not aware that they were supposed to migrate to the top compartment and they were not supposed to lay eggs in the bottom compartment:). Neverless, our wormies worked hard in the last 3 months and they produced 3760 grams of compost. Well done! 👏👏👏 The compost is already distributed into various pots on my balcony garden. I love these small steps in my life towards to a more ecofriendly lifestyle. #zerowasteadventures #vermicompost #firstharvest #hardwork #growyourown #worms #wormpoop #humusz #newbabies #movingday #wormery #organicwaste #tinyliving #indoorcomposting #wurmkiste #kukac #compost #urbangardening #savetheplanet #lesswastelessworries #wastewarriors

Worm castings sifted and sorted! . . Worm castings (vermicompost) are rich in plant nutrients, trace minerals and growth enhancers, and incorporating castings into the soil significantly increases microbial life in the root zone. . . Worm castings are extremely beneficial in that they stimulate plant growth more than any other natural product, enhance the ability of your soil to retain water, and also inhibit root diseases such as root rot. The humus in worm castings removes toxins and harmful fungi and bacteria from the soil. Worm Castings therefore have the ability to fight off plant diseases. . . One of the best benefits of worm castings is you can use as much as you want without the fear of burning tender young plants as other fertilizers are known to do. Unlike other animal manure and artificial fertilizers it is absorbed very easily and almost instantaneously by plants. . . The amazing thing is, that while the nutrients are easily available they are at the same time naturally endowed with a slow release feature, causing the nutrient benefits to last up to 2 months! This benefit is put in place during the digestion process of the earthworm. As the organic matter passes through the alimentary canal of the worm, a thin layer of oil coats the material, later eroding over a period of 2 months. . . Vermicompost provides a time-released benefit, slowly nurturing the plants over a greater length of time! #compost #composting #compostable #recycle #vermicompost #vermiculture #wormfarming #plants #garden #gardening #food #wormpoop #greenschools #growyourownfood #sustainability #sustainable #sustainableschools #growyourownfood #organicsoil #soil #organic #wormbin #smallbusiness #perthsmallbusiness #perth #perthnow #kidzinperth #schoolholidayactivities #vacationcare #perthsmallbusiness #perthschools #homeschool

Spring has sprung and the worms are getting frisky! My composting worms have been mating and depositing eggs in my worm bin like crazy! They line up the wide bands called clitellum and exchange fluids to breed (they are hermaphroditic with both male and female reproductive organs). Each yellow egg takes about 3 weeks to hatch, changing to a maroon color and releasing about 3 worms each! Super interesting! . . . #trimazing #wormcomposting #redwrigglers #redwigglers #redwigglerworms #redworms #vermicomposting #wormseatmygarbage #zerowaste #endfoodwaste #makecompostnotwaste #compost #composting #compostingworms #wormpoop #scienceisfun
