Western States qualifier #4 ✔! I signed up for Black Canyon 100k outside Phoenix on Megan's Megan's recommendation last Oct. Immediately, Kelly and @segallglass told me they were going to crew for me...because they're amazing like that. Mary also joined my team. By race day we had 7 runners and 6 friends making the trek to AZ. This couldn't have worked out better.
Unfortunately, at 4:30am of race day, the route was changed due to too high water crossings. Of course I appreciate the race team keeping us safe, but the new course was a series of out and backs on technical trail that's about 2.5 feet wide. It wasn't ideal. But, we adapt. It did allow us to see each other throughout the race and a lot of the time it worked out that we ran together. That was fun.
Mary had to get in a 20 mile training run so she joined me as a pacer at the end. With her, the time flew by. I don't know how I got so lucky to have these incredible friends in my life.
My fitness was on point thanks to @bobshebest and @point_positive coaching. But, as usually, my stomach went south. I probably should have just vomited but instead I walked too much the last 5-7 miles fighting the nausea. It was frustrating because my legs were feeling great. Figuring this out is my #1 priority in the next six months before TRT100.
My watch died, and I forgot to look at the clock at the end, so I'm waiting for the results to be posted to find out my finish time. It was within a few minutes of 15 hrs. With the WS qualifier on the books, the rest of the year is all fun and games.
Many thanks to the Black Canyon team and many volunteers, our friends who came to support us (Kelly, Sue, Mary, Sue, Emily, Julie), Coach Bob, and Jason for supporting me as I go off on these crazy adventures.
