#3 is the 2019 version of Fruits Basket. I was one of the people who got super excited when this series was announced. The original Fruits Basket from 2001 was the third anime I had ever watched and I was more than ecstatic when the anime was going to be revised. Fruits Basket is about Tohru Honda and her story in the Souma Family. Tohru, who has been living in a tent since her mother passed because she doesn’t want to bother her family and friends, is discovered by two members of the family, Yuki and Shigure. They let her reside with them in their home in exchange for her cooking and cleaning. Once she moves in, Yuki’s cousin Kyo arrives to fight but then Tohru falls on top of Kyo, Yuki, and Shigure, turning them into animals! She learns their family secret, some members of the family turn into animals of the Chinese zodiac when they are hugged by the opposite gender. She vows to keep their secret and continues to live with the Sohma family. The 2019 version of Fruits Basket contains more moments from the manga than the 2001 series. There are moments that were iconic in the original; like Hatsuharu’s despute on his hair with the class president; and those that were only in the manga; like Tohru and Ayame going to lunch together.
Other differences from the 2001 version is first obviously the art style. The art style has been updated to match the modern style but the characters are still given their distinct look like Tohru’s large innocent eyes and long legs. The opening and ending of the series are also more fitting to the modern age. While the opening of the original was soft and featured a violin and dreamy vocals, the 2019 opening is more heart driven and feels more like Tohru herself is singing. The 2001 has the same feeling of its opening, light and dreamy. The 2019 ending, like the opening, feels like the characters, particularly Yuki or Kyo, are singing. It continues to have this true heart feeling that can not compare to the original. I feel so nostalgic watching the 2019 series and honestly am excited for the next few years of Fruits Basket.
