🐢This is handsome Rolo 🐢. He's our big-hearted Weenie pup. He is 1 of 5 in our furry family. He's a rescue for whom a 6 hour drive to retrieve was nothing. It was love at first sight after seeing his sweet face in a single blurry picture about 6 years ago. He is such a sweet boy and loves to bask in warm sunshine, chase things into the woods, or snuggle under bed covers (& yes there have been many nights of thunder where we have hosted all 5 dogs AND our toddler in our full-sized bed πŸ™ŠπŸ˜³πŸ˜). THANKFULLY we just upgraded to a Queen size! . His best buddy is our old man Amigo (our short haired boy chihuahua). He will no doubt NOT be our last Weenie-hound ❀️--once you have a Dachshund there's no not having one 🐢! πŸ‘ΆHe is also the youngest of our furry kids so, although we know not every one of our sweet old pups will see the land we purchase in 5-6 years for the Farmstead, this guy will most likely be one of our first official Farm Dogs πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸŒΎ πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸŒΎπŸΆ ---------------------------------------------- #weenlife #dachshunds #rescueanimals #rescuedogs #foreverhome #adoptnevershop #furryfamily #furrychildren #redweenie #ourfamily #homesteaddog #farmdog #huntingdog #rescuedog #veganblogger #homesteadbloggers #homesteadblog #veganfarmers #homesteading #veganfarmers #vegangarden #vegangardener #permaculture #veganpermaculture #animalphotography #rightwhereweare #slowandsteady #petphotography

πŸ€›πŸ»βœ…πŸ’ͺ🏼 It was a busy week/day. πŸ’ͺπŸΌβœ…πŸ€›πŸ» . β€’ I (Athena) sprouted mung beans for the first time (don't laugh...baby steps!!) β€’ Made date-sweetened vanilla almond milk with leftovers of each, FROZE them & at my GENIUS husband's suggestion, used them for some creamy aeropress brewed ice coffee 🀀🀀🀀 β€’ Strung some Farmer's Market greasy beans β€’ Saved my own Aquafaba from home cooked chickpeas for future vegan donut & homemade vegan mayo recipes β€’ Picked and am drying dill and Tulsi (holy basil) from our herb garden β€’ And made a TON of hummus...also retired an old food processor as it started smoking after a few seconds of use.....yikes 😬😳😀. . And other fun things...like making necklaces with my daughter and reading stories, giving kisses to her and all the puppies (6 at current count, 5 of our own + 1 summer guest), researching straw-bale gardening (not sure how I feel about it yet...will probably do my own version with 1/2 bales and more compost --we have hard, compacted red clay....any suggestions???), refined the plan for the fall garden taking into account less sun in our new yard than we'd hoped 😐, & made dinner out of 6 different left-over meals (!!!!!!!) WHEW!!!! And it's only 5:30pm! #familymovienight #stillfeellikeihaveSOmuchtodo -------------------------------------------------- ♻️Reduce, reuse, THEN recycle♻️ -------------------------------------------------- #homesteadskills #sprouting #homemade #homesteading #veganhomesteadibg #homesteaders #veganblog #homesteadblog #farmersmarket #veganicfarming #veganfood #veganicgardeners #veganfarmers #permaculture #veganpermaculture #onestepatatime #gardening #vegangardening #appalachia #asheville #veganasheville #canning #preserving #zerowaste #nowaste #reuse #zerowasteliving #homesteadingskills

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§πŸŒ²πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸŒΎ Family, forests and farming. Three main reasons that brought us to The Appalachian Mountains to make our home. πŸ₯„Made our first official jars of jam. Foraged wild blackberries and organic blueberries. No pectin and low sugar. πŸ₯„ -------------------------------------------------- INGREDIENTS: 1 unpeeled Apple, processed in a food processor until chopped well (or you can shred with a cheese grater) 2 cups foraged blackberries, mashed 2 cups blueberries, mashed 1 cup raw sugar 2 teaspoons citrus juice (I used lime) DIRECTIONS: Heat all ingredients in a small pot until just bubbling. You can mash the berries at this point. (OR--I prefer to mash before heating but it's up to you). Continue to cook until soft. Mash more as needed. When finished, transfer while hot into sterilized mason jars (+ lids)- (water bath canned) or allow to cool in the pot and put in clean glass containers in the fridge. Will last about 2-weeks in the fridge not canned and sealed. -------------------------------------------------- #canning #preserving #jammaking #preserves #foragedberries #foraging #foraging #homestead #homesteadblogs #homesteading #homesteadingblog #permaculture #veganpermaculture #veganicfarming #veganicgardening #veganhomesteading #veganhomesteaders #permaculture #veganfarmers #vegangardeners #northcarolina #appalachia #foodforests #earthstewardship #earthcare #peoplecare #fairshare #veganasheville #vegankids #veganfamilies

How cute are they? Could you imagine hurting or killing them? Do you feel like their gender makes them any less deserving of living? Well every time you purchase chicken or eggs you're answer is yes to those questions. Male chicks are killed right away * literally put into a grinder alive * and the thousands of females are stuck inside dark, crowded warehouses - the laying hens are then raised to lay eggs and killed once they stop producing, generally their entire lives are spent in small cages not even suitable for one chicken, let alone 4 or 5. They shit on each other, they lay in ammonia riddled cages and suffer burns, they often have their beaks and claws clipped to avoid pecking each other to death. The one and only time they see daylight is when they are shoved into transport trucks and taken to the slaughterhouse where they are hung by their feet aggressively and their lives are taken. The broiler hens are fed such high calorie grain that they grow numerous times faster than any natural chicken would, this usually leads to them being bigger than a full grown chicken by 12 weeks but since their legs are still only growing, they cannot support the weight under them. This causes them to be unable to move, often falling over and being stuck on their backs, or laying in one spot while the ammonia literally burns their skin. The dead chickens amongst the "living". This goes for free range also - instead of cages they are stuck in large warehouses with no natural light and hardly any space to move around "freely". This is only SOME of what goes on in factory farming. I know you try to convince yourself that the labels organic, free range, grass fed make these practices better and therefore okay for you to support. Don't do it. Educate yourself. I have the most loved chickens ever and I would still never ever consume their eggs or meat. We would never accept this if I replaced the word chicken with dog or cat. All animals are sentient beings. They all feel. They all want to live. They all deserve to live. Change the world with your dollar. Stop supporting animal agriculture and factory farming. β™‘

πŸ•― Writing letters Anna Misty Mountain morning to my (Athena's) best friends back in KC. πŸ•―Missing them and dreaming of future visits, late night talks & wilderness adventures πŸš— 🌲. -------------------------------------------------- One of our challenges as two introverts who always want more family time is not getting too isolated. 🌱 Things are growing! 🌱 -------------------------------------------------- Because of our move from Kansas City this year our "spring garden" took the form of starting a Children's Garden at the cohousing community we landed in. Every time I visit our little garden here I am stunned and amazed at the beauty and life and health present in this little space. ✨We found our paraffin oil lamps ✨ #unpacking #settlingin #KCtoTheSmokies -------------------------------------------------- After reading Simplicity Parenting by Kim John Payne a year and a half ago we changed a lot in our daily lives. One of those adjustments was to allow back into our lives the natural rhythms of the sun and the seasons. When it gets dark at night we try our best to limit the artificial delaying of the darkness. We try and practice living closer to the natural rhythms of nature, the sun, and the seasons and it has been such a wonderful change. We sleep better, we rest more. Sometimes it's hard in a world geared to be fluorescent 24/7---But our bodies, minds, souls and hearts all function better this way. In the move from KC we had to keep these as other personal items in storage for 6 months while we shared a small house in a cohousing community, and now that we are unpacking all our boxes we are very thankful to be able to re-fresh our pursuit of more simplistic and natural rhythm living. -------------------------------------------------- #veganicfarming #veganicgardening #veganhomesteading #veganhomesteaders #permaculture #veganpermaculture #veganfarmers #vegangardeners #northcarolina #appalachia #foodforests #earthstewardship #earthcare #peoplecare #fairshare #veganfamilies #simpleliving #kitchengarden #perrenials #annuals #herbgardens #flowergardens #foodgardens #biodynamics #smokeymountaingardeners #simplicityparenting

Zero waste. That's the ideal. The journey is much longer & tougher at times than most people like (including ourselves). But one of the ways our family tries to make a zero-waste lifestyle a reality is by re-using our spaghetti, peach, pickle & other glass jars. We even re-use the mason jars we purchased for our wedding decor! We use these jars to store leftover chili or soup in the fridge, to keep our sourdough starter in, and to buy and store bulk food items. We aren't so great at always remember to take them along to the store so this is our honest confession that, well, we are still "on our way". You can check out our Farmstead Journal under the "Learning" section to see my (Athena's) post on other ways our family is striving for a more zero-waste πŸ‘£ footprint. -------------------------------------- | Learning Post #1 | zero-waste ideals (a process, not an overnight destination) | -------------------------------------- #realpeople #reallife #veganlifestyle #veganicfarming #veganicgardening #veganhomesteading #veganhomesteaders #permaculture #veganpermaculture #veganfarmers #vegangardeners #northcarolina #appalachia #foodforests #earthstewardship #earthcare #peoplecare #fairshare #veganfamilies #simpleliving #kitchengarden #perrenials #annuals #herbgardens #flowergardens #foodgardens #biodynamics #smokeymountaingardeners #zerowaste

PC: @aminthevegan It's a common misconception that vegans hate farmers, I can't speak for all vegans, on this but you'll find most of us don't hate the farmers only what they've been conditioned to do and believe. . You'll often hear farmers say how much they love their animals and how clever they are, and that they'd never want them hurt, and I'm sure they wouldn't like them to suffer, yet they send them to slaughter and what they see on the screens(at cube of truth) is inhumane and wrong(yet it's all standard practice). Is it not betrayal to show your animals love and trust only to lead them to a slaughterhouse to make money off their mutilated corpses, is that not betrayal? I've spoken to farmers and they always say they want the best for their animals, if you want the best for their animals too, don't support animal agriculture with your money. Let's support plant farming, farmers will transition into other agricultural practices which don't exploit animals 🌱 . Can you love dogs and eat them? What's the difference between a dog and a farm animal? Both want to live a life free of harm just like us, why pay for them to be killed when they don't have to be? . The man in the image is not a farmer, @onebulletpershot and myself had the pleasure to talk to this gentleman again, and help him reduce animal suffering in his life a little more each time, he was very receptive and understood that we don't need to fund this suffering in our lives when we can live vegan. . If you're not vegan yet it's worth considering, check out these useful links on how to go vegan :) Www.vegankit.com www.howdoigovegan.com www.challenge22.com (free mentorship through Facebook can answer any questions you could have, it takes 21 days to kick a habit - one extra day for Goodluck!)

They bring our lives so much joy.β™‘ How anyone could ever possibly encourage and support the animal agriculture industry is beyond me, how can we see these animals, feel admiration for them only to turn around and eat their flesh, drink the milk they produce intended for their babies, use their skin and fur for our selfish happiness. Why? how? why is this even happening when we have soooooo many amazing cruelty free options that do not involve slaughtering, raping, abusing, neglecting and exploiting animals. Animals are sentient beings. They feel, they make connections, they love, they parent, they protect, they communicate, they trust... and humans destroy, take advantage of and murder these sacred beings. They are not for our use, for our pleasure or for our taking. Animals should never be on your plate, as your clothing, in your beauty products, testing your products ect. It's the most diabolic, selfish and unnecessary thing we do as stupid humans. With all the advances we have made, we are so far behind when it comes to COMPASSION. We have lost our ability to truly CONNECT. We want whatever is quick and easy, we are too damn plugged in to get out there and make a difference, to care about anything other than ourselves. Animal lives matter A LOT. Make the connection. Stop disassociating the cut of meat from the animal. β™‘ I was not born vegan but I grew to be vegan when I started to see the truth, when I opened my eyes to what is really going on. I will never ever stop being a voice for them now. I feel a moral obligation to fight for animal rights, to save any animal I can, to spread the word of veganism and help others see the beautiful other side that fills your heart and soul with so much peace and fills your body with so much goodness. ❀ . . . . #farmlife #veganfarmers #friendsnotfood #animalsanctuary #vegan #idonteatmyfriends #crueltyfree #livelovefarm #5acreparadise #freerange #animalliberation #mypals #veganfarmmom #veganmom #lifeunplugged #childhoodunplugged #endanimalagriculture #veganaf #farm #veganfamily #loveanimals

My heart hurts so bad. We have lost many chickens and ducks this winter, we've had a serious problem with a mink, despite all of our best efforts to protect our flock, every couple of weeks he comes back and kills for thrill. I understand the circle of life, I understand wild animals needing to eat, but I don't understand senseless killing, it never eats or takes the birds with him, just slits their throats and they bleed out. One night, somehow, he got into our coop and did this to 6 of my girls. Today, in broad day light, he took our boy Rexy-Roo. This handsome guy was the most gentle, loving rooster I've ever met. He was blind, walked a little funny, had the most distinct crow, came when called, and let the kids hold him anytime. The thought that my boy died this way just shakes me. My girls are going to be heart broken when they find out. Compassionate farming is so hard some days πŸ’” This week is kicking my ass hard. I'm so emotionally drained. So glad Shea captured this picture of him. β™‘ . . . #veganfarmers #farmlife #roosterlove #chickenlife

While we were home in Boise we got up early and worked on our property every morning. When we bought our house in January we were so excited to start urban farming that we didn't really consider all the work that goes into just getting started. I have so much respect for farmers and urban farmers everywhere. Our little man was so good all morning while we worked and usually just slept. It was a little cold out so wee bundled up the babe. Doesn't he just look so cute?!
