Exercise tip #9 : form.
I love human movement. But you can ask any of my former clients, I’m big on form. I wouldn’t say I’m a form nazi, but I am pretty strict about it. So why fuss about it? Well, there are two primary reasons: reinforcing poor exercise behavior and mechanics, and the second is injury. You want your body to move in the most optimal way. This helps to get better gains but also helps to prevent injury. While you should be mindful of all movement and muscle activation during any exercise, there is only so much conscious brain power we can apply our attention to. Learning proper form and reinforcing it with practice can help lead to appropriate movement without a huge conscious presence. You can perform that movement with little conscious effort allowing you to use that brain to focus on optimizing mind-muscle activation and contractions. So take your form seriously and don’t look like a dummy in the gym. Look for a trainer or do some good online research. For those of you in gyms, use the mirror to check your work. After all.. that’s what those mirrors are for and not to slate one’s vanity thirst.
