Yesterday I posted that I’m 5 weeks out but I realized this morning that next week is the real 5 weeks - wishful thinking. 😆 One of the benefits of being a part of the StrongFit mentoring program is that we’re encouraged to experiment; to try new things and make note of how they feel, both physically and mentally. It’s made me open my mind to new possibilities in my one-armed training. Yesterday I wanted so desperately to be able to do sandbag squats (a sure fire way for me to work through the cycle of the phylogenetic hierarchy - i.e. it’s a great stress reliever for me) but I can’t hold any weight in my right hand yet. I’m also not ready for a barbell on my shoulders, which basically leaves me with ... air squats. This was my experimental workaround. I added the Pilates ring to my squats to mimic the proprioception of the sandbag resting on my lower abs and pressed into the Pilates ring with the knuckle at the bottom of the index finger of my good hand. Although there was no added weight, I could definitely feel it pull me into the same position I would have achieved with sandbag squats. I went through 4 cycles of these and my movement improved each time. My body is stiffer than usual from being forced into a more sedentary lifestyle for a while, so these squats are a great tool in my one-armed toolbox and will help keep me moving.
