Haddon Hall has been the setting of many a romantic film location (all the Jane Eyres and The Princess Bride to name but a few) but it has its own real life love story. In the 1500’s Dorothy Vernon, beautiful and amiable* daughter of Sir George Vernon fell in love with the second son of The Earl Of Rutland, Thomas Manners. Sir George disapproved, possibly due to the Manners being Protestants while the Vernon’s were Catholic or it could’ve been because Manners was only the second son. Dorothy and Thomas got it on anyway and ran off and eloped and all was well that ends well until they named one of their sons Roger.
*Not entirely sure what being amiable entails, to be honest. It’s used a lot to describe Jane Bennett in P&P, so I’m tipping it means a bit mardy and prone to nearly dying if you get caught out in the rain. See also Marianne Dashwood.
