There are many in the wellness community that promote food as medicine, but I think there is a huge risk of harm with this advice:
1. It prevents people from receiving medical care they might need.
2. It causes people to see their health issues as their fault.
3. And if food could cure everything, then we wouldn’t need the multitude of lifesaving medicines we have today.
Don’t get me wrong, some health conditions are self-inflicted but many are not. Medical nutrition therapy does offer diet solutions for people with certain chronic illnesses, but not all conditions have a nutrition component.
I have an disease called Hashimotos. It is an autoimmune thyroid disorder. It doesn’t only affect my thyroid. I also get bouts of chronic hives and angioedema, which causes swelling in my face and joints. It’s extremely uncomfortable and sometimes physically disfiguring.
I hadn’t had a flare up in five years, but am currently in my third week of daily hives, swelling, and weight gain.
For someone to tell me that I need to eliminate something from my diet or simply take a supplement to cure my ailments would only leave me feeling like a failure. Because guess what... food won’t fix this. I’ve tried it, and it doesn’t work for me.
I’m a dietitian. I eat well, get regular exercise, and manage my sleep and stress to the best of my ability. But I can’t protect my body from this disease. Human bodies are fragile. None of us are immune.
My body requires medicine so I can continue to function. I’m thankful that I have treatment options to get me through these flare ups. I’m thankful for the advancements in healthcare to treat conditions like mine.
Food is good. It provides the nutrients our bodies need to grow and thrive and survive. But when your body is inflicted with disease, know that sometimes food is not the answer.
Have any of you ever received harmful advice about using food as medicine?
