I truly adore my goats - honestly I do ... having said that, they are like naughty children who are more often than not in the spot where they’re not supposed to be doing something they shouldn’t ... right here, the family are about to venture into my just planted vege garden ... all I want is a simple life - these gorgeous creatures are making that simple life I yearn for a little more complicated than I hope for ... - #swanbayfarm #goats #farmanimals #womenwhofarm #organicfood #realfood #growyourfood #oermaculture #sustainable #sustainability #keepitsimple #countrylife #knowwhereyourfoodcomesfrom #oceangrove #bellarine #countryvictoria #paddocktoplate #mothernaturerocks #queenscliff #geelong #getoutdoors

I was lucky enough to visit @swanbayfarm yesterday for a photoshoot. It is a truely magical place, not only because of the location and visible beauty of the property but for so many other important reasons you can begin to discover via their Instagram account. Catching up afterwards with the remarkable @clare_voitin was a great reminder that not only is the garden always in transition but that life is the same. A snapshot in time is just that. It will change tomorrow and will be unrecognisable a year from now.

One of my favourite foods to grow at this time of year is pumpkins ... not only are the options of which one to grow vast, but the time for harvest always exceeds expectations ... pumpkins are one of the easiest foods to grow - very low maintenance and easy to maintain ... pumpkins enjoy the company of most plants and foods in the garden, and its meandering vine tends to work well with your garden, rather than interfere or invade ... plant them near your corn patch and the vine will grow easily in and around the tall stalks ... pumpkins also grow well around citrus trees ... pumpkins provide added benefit to the garden by helping to suppress weeds naturally, as they cover a substantial amount of area and their leaves can help to manage the growing rate of unwanted weeds ... to determine when a pumpkin is ready for harvest, you need to look at its vine - if the vine is still green, be patient and wait, for your pumpkins still have some growing to do ... when the vine has died, it's time to harvest ... pumpkins will store well throughout winter in a cool, dark and dry area ... and when your vine has died, leave it where it is, as it becomes ideal to include in your mulch ... to get your kids enthused about gardening and growing their own food, start out with pumpkins - not only do they see short-term rewards for their efforts, the rate of growth (both in the vine and the produce) can captivate even the most impatient and fidgety little ones - but the harvesting is the part they'll love the best ... #pumpkins #pumpkin #womenwhofarm #growyourown #orange #organic #realfood #theprovidore #swanbayfarm #vegetables #epicgardening #urbanorganicgardener #urbangardenersrepublic #eatwell #permaculture #sustainability #sustainableliving #farm #farming #texture #growsomethinggreen #vegetarian #veganlifestyle ------v---👩-----/------- -------/------👩👩👩👩-----/----- Follow @hayleysgrowsfood repost @clare_voitin

The role we need to play in our natural world is to participate in such a way that we enhance and support what already goes and grows ... and whilst we generally have good intentions, at times we tend to try and change, adjust or manipulate what Mother Nature has already mastered ... rarely is it with malice or with a destructive mindset, but rather from a lack of education or understanding about the natural space we live in ... I was reminded of this fact when walking through one of our vege gardens at Swan Bay Farm today ... I was planning on planting a new crop of leafy greens in one of the beds ... what I stumbled on was mixed mesclun lettuce growing prolifically in the gravelled paths ... hundreds of the freshest, brightest green and purple leafy seedlings flourishing in the very spot the breeze determined they should grow ... and they are pretty close to perfect ... for me, this is a gentle reminder that no matter what we know, there is always more to be learned by simply paying attention to what's around us ... I know that most would have walked straight over these tiny treasures, diminishing their opportunity to reach their full potential ... by keeping an open mind and paying greater attention - being mindful - brings the good fortune of lessons waiting to be learned ... in a few weeks, I figure I'll have the most incredible organic lettuce , ready and waiting for me to harvest ... #lettuce #food #organic #nature #mothernature #farm #gardener #gardening #theprovidore #swanbayfarm #freshisbest #eatwell #womenwhofarm #bellarinepeninsula #paddocktoplate #veganlifestyle #green #leafygreens #vegetables #keepitsimple #urbangardenersrepublic #urbanorganicgardener #epicgardening ------v---👩-----/------- -------/------👩👩👩👩-----/----- Follow @JasonGandy_gardenparty repost @clare_voitin

The first of our pumpkins we've successfully harvested today ... we haven't planted quite as many as we we normally do this season, but what we have planted promises to be a bumper crop ... we're well and truly into Autumn now, yet the pumpkins are a slow to reach their prime this season, largely due to a cooler Summer and quick shift into the cooler months already upon us ... pumpkins are one of my favourite foods to grow - not only because they're dead easy to succeed in, but they won't let you down with the reward for your effort ... get your head around the concept of planting just one seed into the soil, and very rapidly in fact, watching that seed's evolution into a seedling, robust young plant, becoming a vine that then bears food in the form of delicious pumpkins ... they are also a great weed suppressant for the garden ... one of the best features though is the ability to store pumpkins for months on end after harvest, thus enjoying the fruits of your labour well into the cooler months of the year (pumpkin soup I hear you say!) ... their skin shows character, they're a favourite vegetable for many and affordable to buy, eat and grow ... next year, our intentions are to plant the seeds into one of the resting pig paddocks - we expect to see rapid growth, unhindered by any space limitations or obstacles, with a super rich, fertile soil, thanks to our open and free range piggy community ... have you planted pumpkins this year? #pumpkin #pumpkins #paddocktoplate #womenwhofarm #growwell #growfood #growyourown #growsomethinggreen #urbangardenersrep #urbanorganicgardener #urbangardenersrepublic #food #freshfood #realfood #vegetables #organic #sustainable #womenwhofarm #bellarine #bellarinepeninsula #theprovidore #swanbayfarm #nofoodwaste #supportlocal #buylocal ------v---👩-----/------- -------/------👩👩👩👩-----/----- Follow @JasonGandy_gardenparty repost @clare_voitin

Our weekend down at Swan Bay Farm consisted of little work and more time spent huddled around the open fire, listening to the rain, hail and wind beating down on our tin roof, while the thunder and lightning made its presence known ... it was wet and cold and why I would describe the weekend as almost perfect ... in a way, it was forced down time - a chance to take it a little easier within the confines of the 4 walls that makes our farmhouse our home ... what we didn't anticipate was a break in the day, which allowed us to get outside for a few hours ... my second son and I used this time to harvest our olives ... we've been eyeing them for a few weeks, always believing that we should wait just one more weekend, so our olives are at the perfect stage ready to brine ... 40-something kilos later and we've harvested the fattest, most succulent olives we've seen on these trees ... and we couldn't be happier ... this time spent with my son, however, was by far the highlight of the day ... not only did we achieve something in a weekend we didn't expect to do, but we had so much fun hanging out together ... the small talk, the sharing of ideas, making time to photograph the olives (my son is 12 and already loves being behind the camera) and climbing trees ... just being together ... when I reflected back on this time spent with him, I realised that the achievement wasn't in the successful harvesting of the olives, or even the success of the olives themselves ... it was about the time spent with one of the most precious people in my world - my son ... shit - I climbed trees again, slowed right down and picked the olives one by one ... we shared different ways to take photographs and we shared our photos ... we grow food, nurture the growing process and indulge in the end product, not just because of the need to be sustained, but to grow, nurture and indulge in the most important thing in our world - family ... #family #food #olives #growrealfood #realfood #womenwhofarm #kids #green #organic #farm #farming #gardening #urbangardenersrepublic #urbanorganicgardener #epicgardening #nature #macro #photo #storytelling #paddocktoplate #swanbayfarm #support ------v---

This Sunday marks the day we celebrate the incredible gift of Mothers ... Mums are, by nature, incredible beings, who give so much of themselves unconditionally, sometimes for very little in return... Mums work tirelessly, they know just about everything, they understand you better than you do and there's very few problems that cannot be fixed by a Mum ... Mums wear many hats and usually wear them well ... Mums don't come with a manual, but their instinct usually gets them through ... Mum is the one with you from the moment you enter this beautiful world and will be there to nurture, support and guide you every step of the way ... as I head towards this Sunday, my emotions are bittersweet and a little turmoiled, as I learn to accept my Mum will be watching over me from Heaven ... I'm yet to find the words and thoughts that heal such loss and I have no way of knowing how to anticipate the wave of grief that must surely be on its way ... but whilst I head towards Sunday apprehensive about what the day brings, I realise that it should still be a time to celebrate ... I was fortunate to have my Mother for a long time - many aren't so lucky ... I also must remember to celebrate the gift of my own children, who will wake up tomorrow wanting to make my day great ... so there's two things - the gift of Mum and the gift of Motherhood ... so, to my Mum - the most beautiful woman I have ever known - thank you for everything ... your unconditional love and support has moulded me into the Mother I choose to be for my own kids ... I hope you're happy, safe and content ... xxx #mothernature #mum #missyoumum #yellow #flower #swanbayfarm #crysanthemum #petals #motherhood #motherearth #family #paddocktoplate #gardener #organic #farm #farming #thankyou ------v---👩-----/------- -------/------👩👩👩👩-----/----- Follow @JasonGandy_gardenparty repost @clare_voitin

Today found us in the Yarra Valley visiting the stunning Allowyn Gardens for our annual dose of gardening inspiration ... the Gardens showcase the four seasons so beautifully and provide a welcome reminder as to why we should appreciate the diversity of each season and its role in Nature's cycle ... like us, trees, shrubs and plants need downtime, which is why winter matters, so that many plants, shrubs and trees can rest, rejuvenate and restore for reproduction ... the Edible Garden is where most of our time is spent, to find inspiration for our own creation at Swan Bay Farm ... my great find was the crab apple ... these trees are seriously abundant producers ... its fruit is considerably smaller in size than the average apple but certainly not limited to its many and varied uses ... each season is striking ... at this time of year (autumn), the fruit is draping from the trees, burdening the branches with its weight and bending the boughs ... winter brings welcome dormancy, enabling the tree to rest and restore its energy in order to return and produce once again ... whilst you won't find many crab apples in the kiddie lunch box, because of their intensely tart flavour, they're a very versatile fruit, used for making savouries jellies, preserves, jams and even ciders ... it's naturally high pectin content increases its value in the kitchen ... companion plants that support healthier trees and prolific yields are gladiolus, hyacinths and sweet violas ... as we prepare to plant another paddock of heirloom trees this winter at Swan Bay Farm, we'll be sure to include crab apples as a feature species ... and if you want to enjoy one of the most stunning blossoms you'll ever see, plant a crab apple ... #apples #tree #gardens #organic #organicgardening #seasonal #autumn #yarravalley #farming #sustainability #sustainableliving #fruit #freshisbest #eatwell #realfood #swanbayfarm #theprovidore #womenwhofarm #epicgardening #urbanorganicgardener #paddocktoplate #nature #mothernature ------v---👩-----/------- -------/------👩👩👩👩-----/----- Follow @JasonGandy_gardenparty repost @clare_voitin

I have to admit I have a strong affection for vines and climbers ... there is something quite gentle and intimate in the way the tendrils creep and climb, searching for stability in order to continue their quest for greater heights ... and sunlight ... the vividness in colour is a relief to find in a midst of a season known for transitioning nature from life to death ... their speed of growth, ease of care and real value to the soils and their immediate surrounds set them as one of the leaders in 'must-haves' in the garden ... there are many different climbers to choose from (and that's just the edibles) ... beans, peas, fruits, veges ... all providing real value to you and those you share your food with ... the value of some that give back to the earth is a good enough reason to plant each season ... one of the greatest benefits in growing some of these non-invasive climbers ... the first one that comes to mind is the value of returning nitrogen to the soils ... nitrogen is needed by all cells for reproduction and growth ... it also increases the yields of the food you grow, in particular, fruit and leafy vegetables ... green is the colour of life and living ... the colour green is energetic, life giving and nourishing, both for us and the environment we live in ... #green #growwell #growfood #growyourown #bellarine #bellarinepeninsula #urbangardenersrepublic #urbanorganicgardener #urbangardenersrep #womenwhofarm #swanbayfarm #peas #sustainable #sustainableliving #beans #peas #eatyourgreens # ------v---👩-----/------- -------/------👩👩👩👩-----/----- Follow @JasonGandy_gardenparty repost @clare_voitin

Working down at Swan Bay Farm this weekend, I took the time to wander around our vege paddock to rediscover our stands out in the garden at this time of year ... with such a vast area as we are fortunate to have, I tend to need reminders as to what I've planted, where I've planted it and - most importantly - why ... at the Farm, there are a number of areas dedicated to animals and/or gardens, all of which require our time and attention, as well as ongoing management ... with time so often limited, we tend to prioritise our jobs in order to maximise the value of our efforts ... wandering around our vege paddock today, I was pleasantly surprised to find my 12 month old Tansy bush thriving in amongst the overgrown greens, dormant trees and smaller shrubs ... we planted Tansy for a number of reasons, all of which were done in order to reduce our workload and help us to support the fruit trees and veges planted close by ... you see, Tansy is one of the preferred 'guardians' of the organic garden - a companion plant that, when thriving, is clearly doing well in its surrounds and therefore supporting other neighbouring plants, shrubs and trees ... Tansy is a great defender of pests and disease ... it is an invaluable companion for most fruit trees - particularly citrus - as it deters most harmful flying insects ... Tansy also helps protect berries, the cabbage family and roses ... if you have orange trees, underplant them with Tansy in order to sweeten the juice of the fruit ... grown with lavender, you have a formidable team to combat insects for citrus ... it has a stunning display of flowers throughout most of the year and keeps its luscious green foliage looking fresh and new ... beautiful colour in the winter months, Tansy is a keeper ... #womenwhofarm #swanbayfarm #thesimplelife #yellow #organicgardening #urbanorganicgardener #organic #farming #urbangardenersrep #urbanorganicgardener #urbangardenersrepublic #farmhouse #growfood #growyourown #growsomethinggreen #growrealfood #paddocktoplate #bellarinepeninsula #bellarine #localfood #localfoodloop #gardening #organicgardenermag #paddocktoplate #organic ------v---👩-----/------- -------/------👩👩👩👩----

Working in our vege paddock at Swan Bay Farm is proving to not be a job for the uncommitted ... the optimist (me) only sees the benefits in dedicating precious space to growing food, whereas the realist (also me), accepts that such a project comes with its challenges throughout the seasons ... I've always said it takes 12 months to settle into a new working space for growing food and this project - our biggest yet - is no exception ... getting the design right is often a work in progress and first time round, you'll rarely get it right, so don't sweat on it if you see flaws in your initial plans ... most things can be easily adapted or fixed ... understanding your soils, the most productive growing areas and discovering which plants grow best for you will only come with time, trial and error ... whilst I simply cannot grow basil at #SwanBayFarm , growing basil in our own urban garden is a breeze ... and understanding the relationship between plants and compatible foods for your garden is like a puzzle that needs a bit of thought to make all the pieces fit, and just another of the challenges offering major rewards when it comes to growing food - the success of your efforts through seasonal harvests is what makes growing food such a pleasure ... that, and experiencing the flavours of own grown food ... #farming #foodporn #womenwhofarm #bellarine #bellarinepeninsula #urbangardenersrepublic #urbanorganicgardener #urbangardenersrep #epicgardening #organicgardenermag #growsomethinggreen #growfood #organic #gardening #cabbage #freshisbest ------v---👩-----/------- -------/------👩👩👩👩-----/----- Follow @JasonGandy_gardenparty repost @clare_voitin

In Australia, we are experiencing some beautiful sunny days, with a briskness in the air that reminds you winter is well and truly here ... some days, the temperature seems to be plummeting, as the days get colder and a little shorter ... I love winter - it's one of my four favourites seasons! ... I love the feeling of random warmth from the sun, cloudless days, where the colours in the landscape seem illuminated ... I also enjoy the days when it's too wet to play ... as a farmer, I am eternally grateful for this time of year - a new season of activity, a time to enjoy the dormancy of our trees, knowing that the seasons to follow will be more prolific in growth and offerings than the last, and a time to be grateful for the rains that dump, refilling our dams and replenishing our land ... winter is essential, yet too often, I hear others complain about this seasonal blight ... whilst I appreciate that the cold and wet isn't for everyone, I tend to think we should be grateful to have the gift of living another day and experiencing these moments ... winter is magic - it brings us crisp clear days, cosy moments and open fires ... winter gives us snow, which means holidays, recreational time and a chance to pull out your favourite coat ... these days deliver wonderful experiences and lasting memories ... winter continues to deliver visual splendour, whilst enabling the rest of nature time to sleep ... for farmers, winter can be harsh, particularly if the rains don't come in time or deliver enough to satisfy their essential needs ... there's also way too many who don't have that favourite coat, warm open fire or a roof over their head ... it is for these reasons that we should be grateful for every day we open our eyes, and have time to experience what lies ahead - every day we wake up is a day of privilege - be thankful for the opportunity of another day to enjoy, learn and share - after all, many don't have the good fortune of seeing tomorrow ... • #winter #landscape #rural #farming #farmhouse #thesimplelife #thecountrylife #trees #blueskies #freshdays #paddocktoplate #swanbayfarm #bendigo #ruralvictoria #growfood #organic #epicgardening #chimney #hay ----

When my hubby stands in this spot at Swan Bay Farm, he sees a shed that needs to be pulled down ... when I stand in this spot, I see a perfect picture that reminds me to keep life simple ... beauty in life can be found in the most unexpected ways - it's not so much about what we see, but how we see it ... we can look at life as a glass half full - full of opportunity, positivity and acceptance or half empty - seeing things only from a negative tilt and always assuming the worst ... when things don't seem great, or you hear yourself finding fault in everything, challenge yourself to see the brighter, lighter and positive side ... it may not be easy to do, but it will most certainly surprise you ... beauty and goodness is everywhere - you just need to stop, look and listen ... #womenwhofarm #swanbayfarm #thesimplelife #thecountrylife #growfood #organic #epicgardening #paddocktoplate #bellarine #bellarinepeninsula #growsomethinggreen #growyourownfood #growyourown #urbangardenersrep #urbanorganicgardener #urbangardenersrepublic #naturephotography #nature_brilliance #cottage #shed #farm #farming #farmhouse ------v---👩-----/------- -------/------👩👩👩👩-----/----- Follow @JasonGandy_gardenparty repost @clare_voitin

Whilst the farming life isn't for everyone, I categorically know it's the right choice for me (and my family) ... it's most certainly not an easy undertaking as it poses countless ups and almost as many downs - or so it seems ... today, we were blessed with almost perfect weather that enabled us to plant over 50 cider apples trees into the most magnificent, nutrient dense soil ... whilst we are privileged to have such space to plant 100's of trees, shrubs and plants, imagine if everyone planted just one tree in their lifetime ... every day of farming brings new lessons and another new challenge - but it reminds me that just about everything can be fixed, which makes the problems seem to disappear ... to top off a near perfect day, we were blessed to find 12 new piglets at Swan Bay Farm ... it's why the farming life always pushes your boundaries, but also continues to bear incredible gifts ... it also reminds us that every day above ground is a good day ... #womenwhofarm #swanbayfarm #theprovidore #thesimplelife #thecountrylife #farm #farming #farmanimals #piglet #pig #rural #bellarine #bellarinepeninsula #urbangardenersrepublic #organic #organiclife #organicgardening #organicgardenermag #urbanorganicgardener #supportlocal #precious #geelong #plantatree ------v---👩-----/------- -------/------👩👩👩👩-----/----- Follow @JasonGandy_gardenparty repost @clare_voitin
