"To go in the dark with a light is to know the light.
To know the dark, go dark. Go without sight,
and find that the dark, too, blooms and sings,
and is traveled by dark feet and dark wings."
- Wendell Berry
Like most, I am naturally drawn to the light, and use it as a synonym for hope and all that is good in the world; whereas the dark scares me, represents a threat, and symbolises suffering. This poem helps me think differently about the dark. It reminds me to always stay with what's happening, to accept the fullness of reality, to surrender, even if it breaks my heart. It inspires me to stare darkness in the face and return its gaze with unwavering courage - my own darkness, that of other people, and the world's. And through it, to lose my fear of it, and discover not only the pain, but also the wonders and opportunities it holds.
