This hollow strangler fig or ficus tree made for a perfect natural staircase to climb nearly 50m. This brave girl must've gone up and down at least 3 times while we were there and all I could think of was how many times would @clifftonsyngkon love doing this? I went a little ways up before I empathized with my hamstrings. #santaelena #costarica #ficus #stranglerfig #stranglerthings

#Repost @julialikestacobell with @download_repost ・・・ Strangler tree. 🌲 These trees grow deep in the forest where the competition for light is fierce. The seedlings grow downward and take over a host tree— sometimes killing it in the process. #natureismetal . . . . . . . . . . . . #martinique #stranglerfig #tree #tropical #jardin #jardindebalata #vacation #juliastravels #budgettravel #sorelleamorepresets #garden #travel #vacation #vacationmode #adventure #trees #treeoflife #forest #naturelovers #naturephotography #strangler

Science Saturday: This is a Curtain Tree Fig (Ficus virens), a type of strangler fig that germinates on top of another tree. It will then grow its aerial roots towards the ground before killing the host tree. Although the host tree is killed, it is not a parasitic plant but an epiphyte as it gains its nutrients from the ground. This particular tree is 500 years old and is approximately 50m tall. It has also been added to the Queensland Heritage Register for its importance in demonstrating evolution or pattern of Queensland’s history and for its aesthetic significance 🌱. . . . . . . #sciencesaturday #fact #nature #heritage #queensland #stranglerfig #fig #ficus #ficusvirens #curtaintreefig #athertontablelands #yungaburra #tnq #plant #outdoors #ecology #biology #aerialroots

Ficus aurea. Ficus estrangulador/strangler fig. Bottom, middle and top view. In figs of this group, seed germination usually takes place in the canopy of a host tree with the seedling living as an epiphyte until its roots establish contact with the ground. After that, it enlarges and strangles its host, eventually becoming a free-standing tree in its own right. Individuals may reach 30 m (100 ft) in height. Like all figs, it has an obligate mutualism with fig wasps: figs are only pollinated by fig wasps, and fig wasps can only reproduce in fig flowers. The tree provides habitat, food and shelter for a host of tropical lifeforms including epiphytes in cloud forests and birds, mammals, reptilesand invertebrates(Wikipedia).

🌀The organisms you’ll find at Edge of the World, Costa Rica! We’re always amazed whenever we visit. If it’s not the frogs croaking, it’s cicadas or the rain pouring down on the roof. I love the way we have to surrender to our surroundings at EOW. Here is a turquoise cicada (don’t know which one-let me know if you can name it!), tree frog (very small ~1.5 inches long), white-faced capuchin, Giant grey Sphinx moth caterpillar, oyster mushrooms, strangler fig, vanilla orchid, and a milk frog (we run into many especially in the wetter season) • • • #cicada #treefrog #whitefacedcapuchin #oystermushrooms #stranglerfig #vanillaorchid #pseudosphinx #tetriosphinx #frangipanihornworm #plumeriacaterpillar #giantgreysphinxmoth #milkfrog

We felt very inconsequential in the Daintree Rainforest 🌳 This enormous strangler fig is located at the point on Cape Tribulation before only equipped 4WD's can venture the remaining distance to the tip of Cape York. After this we got absolutely drenched by warm rain that continued for hours and hours 🌧 Definitely had some special experiences throughout our holiday 💕

• 🇬🇧 Finally we have arrived in Cambodia, the third country of our honeymoon world trip. Our first stop is one of the most famous temple ruins of the world: The UNESCO world heritage site of Angkor! Even though we have seen many temples, ruins and ancient cities during our previous journeys, Angkor is absolutely unique. We are deeply impressed by the amazing architectural skills of the Khmer. Having a look at the Eastern Gate of Ta Som Temple and the massive strangler fig (Ficus sp.) we are equally impressed by the forces of nature. We wonder, what will be left from our civilization in 1000 years‘ time? What do you think? • #angkor #angkortemples #tasomtemple #cambodia #kambodscha #unescoworldheritage #unescoworldheritagesite #worldtrip #honeymoon #reisen #austriantravelblogger #reiseschatzerei #weltreisende #weltreise2019 #weltreise #bealpha #powerofnature #ruinen #ficus #stranglerfig #würgefeige #travelphotography #reisefotografie #shotoftheday #fotodestages #magicmoment #globetrotter #reiseblog #visitcambodia #hochzeitsreise

There's something incredibly romantic and picturesque but also sad about the strangler figs taking over some of the temples at Angkor. Nature reclaims. This gopura has survived since the 12th century, and hopefully will survive hundreds of years more. . 👉 Swipe to see what one of the other gopuras at Ta Som look like sans fig. Which do you prefer?

Walk around #preahkhan temple, especially parts where the structure have collapsed, perhaps by the weight of a fig tree or from the ravages of time, one can’t help being in awe of this other-worldly place. Look up now and then, and you will see what’s truly unique about this wonderful and wonderous place! . . . . . . . . #beautifulworld #exploretheglobe #globe_travel #keepexploring #roamtheplanet #travel_captures #cambodia #siemreap #instatravel #sonyalpha #temples #loves_united_asia #everydayasia #treesofinstagram #adventure #ancientarchitecture #archaeology #stranglerfig #traveladdicted #wondersoftheworld #bestplacestogo #likesforlikesback #welivetoexplore
