New video up on YouTube today! I get asked a lot of questions about weeds, so I figured I might as well go over what I'm doing with them and why. (Link in profile.) . . I took this pic when I started building this pile and totally didn't cover this portion of the process in the video, but realized it might be nice to write it out somewhere so figured I'd do it here. 🤓 . . Whenever I start a new pile, in addition to my "weeds" and poultry bedding I like to add herbs, flowers, fungi, and leaf litter to the layers as I pile, partially because it makes the process fun and pretty but mostly because it gets it it all going a little bit faster. . . I often include a small amount of comfrey as an activator, as well as various herbs and fungi that are in season and either known to be adaptogenic/immunostimulating (like tulsi/holy basil, reishi, shiitake) or immunomodulating (like echinacea, calendula, elder, turkey tail.) The way I see it, if "we are what we eat eats," then we might as well get health going on the ground floor in terms of soil. . . This month's mix included echinacea, yarrow, mugwort (no roots!), monarda (bee balm), and a few fungal fruit bodies like turkey tail and unidentified (not deadly) field mushrooms from the edge of the forest. There's something about this combination of herbs (including a few gentle antimicrobials) that felt "right" when combined with the stink that was a pile of straw and shavings covered in anaerobic chicken and duck poo. 😂 . . This group of add-ins will change with the seasons: sometimes I'll add sage or chamomile or garlic instead of monarda, or rosemary instead of echinacea, or aloe instead of comfrey. And sometimes I add them in addition to! All depends on what I have on-hand. . . I firmly believe that nature provides us with the materials we need to "get through" each season, and it's up to us to learn how to interpret these offerings and incorporate them as best as we're able. If you're struggling with your "weeds", perhaps reframing your perspective of them may be worth a shot? 🌱❤️🙏🏼 . . . #soilbuilding #soilmatters #compost #adaptogenicherbs #symbiosis #workingwithnature #nospray #livingsoil #healthysoil

Persimmon Happiness! The fruit literally glows on leafless, bare branches when they are ripening and are a wonderful winter sight. These are on espaliers so don’t take up much space...perfect on a fence and perfect for eating fresh, cooking, in salads and relishes. I’m sure there’s oodles of other uses too. Loads of fiber in these and an excellent source of flavonoids which means they are full of antioxidants so a healthy addition to the diet. I like them crunchy, Paul likes them soft and the birds like them any old how so throwing a net over them helps. Happy Tuesday. 🧡. #persimmon #justpicked #foodismedicine _________________________________________________ #homegrown #eatclean #antioxidants #wellbeing #plantbased #simple #gardenharvest #eattheseasons #feedfeed #ahealthynut #eeeeets #homemade #homegrown #organic #raw #superfoods #whatstoeat #foodinspiration #foodstagram #homeharvest #steenshoney #homelife #healthyfood #cleaneats #plantsheal #freshisbest #soilmatters

Most of us agree that organic is best. How can those of us on a limited budget afford this healthy food? This is a common question, and one that stumps many experts. The plot keeps moving forward. 👨‍🌾👩‍🌾💪 We cleared the right side of the plot and started sowing and transplanting seedlings. The soil needs organic matter. While digging we found very few worms. Yesterday we met our plot's neighbours and received few spare plants. But most importantly we spotted an hedgehog running between plots. I'm now convinced on my next project: dig a little pond and build a shelter for wildlife. 🙏🦔 . . . . . #allotment #allotmentlife #ukgardening #permaculture #organicveggies #organicgardening #eatwhatyougrow #potagergarden #digging #gartenliebe #soilmatters #mulch #gardeningisfun #instagardener #familygarden #homestead #selfsufficiency #nopesticides #nochemicals #sowing #plantswap #wildlife #ortobio #moestuin

We continually monitor and collect data on our properties to verify trends in: carbon sequestration, water absorption and the health and vitality of the soil. We also observe and record new plant species and the improved presence of native wildlife. . 12/19 Thick, corky bark is one of the main adaptations of trees to survive fire, which is a necessary part of Cerrado's ecology. Regular fires help the nutrients to be recycled back into the soil and benefit certain plant species that can only sprout or even bloom, after the fire. . . . Pirenópolis, Goias, Brazil.

11/19 Rocky, mineral rich soils and dry seasonal climate have influenced the Cerrado over thousands od years. Cerrado biome covers a fifth of Brazil and is second in size in the whole of South America after the Amazon. It has a great variety of habitats - from wet grasslands to dry canopy forests (pictured), to humid forests, which serve as green corridors throughout the landscape. During the rainy season, plants in the Cerrado's dry forest thrive, while the rest of the year they have adapted to withstand desert-like conditions. . . . Pirenópolis, Goias, Brazil.

10/19 The red waters of Rio das Almas flowing through Pirenópolis. Such water colour is often mistakenly attributed to mud getting moved around during rainy season. In truth, the colour is due to high content of iron in the soil. . . . Pirenópolis, Goias, Brazil.

More summer soil sampling, but on Kaua'i! At @ntbg we soil sampled from bokashi (fermented compost) in primarily vegetable plots, under agroforest breadfruit ('Ulu), and grassy areas in two different soil types: an Inceptisol (undeveloped soil) and Vertisol (shrink-swell soil, which has a cracked surface when dry and super sticky when wet). We also sampled for an old forest and unmanaged areas at Polihale. Additionally we took soils from a neem tree farm under smaller and larger trees, and an unmanaged area. The soil there was an Entisol, which is even less developed than an Inceptisol. Huge thanks to @lucy__lemon for allowing us access to her plots and the undergraduate crew ( @meganluvnotwar @garlandrogers @liz_loschert ). I'm so honored to work with an amazing group of ladies! Couldn't do this work without you. 💚

Our first harvest - mixed salad greens! I believe that nourishing the soil and growing plants is one of the best things we can do for the planet these days. The more plants we can grow, the more carbon we can sequester. Even just a little garden, like @henley.phillips and I started (and Henley mostly tends, ha ha!) this season, is worth it. Every little plant counts! If you can't grow a garden, go to your local farmers market and support those who are nourishing our soil @missoulafarmersmarket @clarkforkmarket @fullbushelfarm , or partner with those who believe in the power of nutrient-dense (fresh local) food @nutritionmechanic @florahealthy !!⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ #outdoorfood #naturerx #soil #soilgrown #soilhealth #soilfoodweb #soilassociation #soilscience #soilgrow #soilforlife #SoilBuilding #soilmatters #backyardgarden #enduranceathlete #humanpoweredadventures #sheexplores #ultrarunning #womenwhorun #womenled #womenempowerment #ultrarunninglife #trailrunning #womenrunning #endurancetraining #womenwhoexplore #adventure #getoutside #keepitwild #womeninnature #outdoorchef

Layers! It is all about layers, not only with make up or fashion. 😁 I try to mulch with a mix of organic material and living plants that shade the ground. Here we have a Nashi pear and a gooseberry tree poking through a layer of cornflower and some other semi wild flowers... This prevents moisture from evaporation and erosion of the soil. Plus it draws all kind of insects towards your fruit trees. The cornflowers have been a hit for the bees. In my opinion, it also looks fantastic. 🌱 🌱 🌱 #fruitforest #growyourownfood #organicgardening #permaculture #horticulture #permakultur #smallgarden #slopegarden #urbangarden #mulch #gärtnern #ökologisch #obstgarten #soilmatters

Summer soil sampling! Here, we're sampling an Andisol (volcanic ash-derived soil) in an old forest (photo 1), dryland taro (photo 2), and grass (photo 3), all at @uhlyonarboretum We'll analyze the soil health of these samples. The Hawai'i soil health index consists of 9 different tests that tell us about the physical, chemical, and biological nature of the soil. Currently, we're working to sample and test the full range of soil health in all the soil types (10 of the 12 major soil types aka soil orders) and management (generally, agriculture, ranches, and forests) found here on the islands so we can calculate soil health scores. In photo 3, peep the seasoned soil scientist, Dr. Deenik, sampling in slippers.

Check out these soil layers from a recent planting. An example of the very poor soil conditions found at most new suburban developments. They bring in lots of dirt and clay to shape the land and build foundations. Then top it off with just enough top soil to support the growth of turf grass, but not much else. The result is often a landscape with very little water retention that's not going to be able to support much life at all without a lot of outside inputs. Primed to become a barren landscape given the right conditions. It's also hell to dig in. Especially after a nearly month long drought and sustained temperatures in the high 90s. 😬 . . . #knowyoursoil #sustainablelandscaping #sustainabledevelopment #soilmatters #fooddeserts

Young plants that are hidden or out of reach of stock and roaming wildlife, have a much better chance of becoming established, with some even going to seed for regeneration. This patch of ground was under some fallen timber. The soil smells fresh, is a deep rich red colour and still damp from rain 6 weeks ago. You can easily dig your hands into it with little effort allowing it to filter through your fingers. The plants are anchored by their roots that live a secretive life underground, creating cracks, holes and air pockets within the soil as they grow and develop; allowing rainfall to be absorbed. Over time organic matter naturally captured and made up of dry leaves, decayed wood, dung and bits of discarded wool from our dorpers has enriched this soil, fed the microbes and supported new plant life. This combination of soil activity has played a major role in supporting the growth of this salad bowl of native plant species to flourish - just visualize this on a much bigger scale. Let’s take a second to compare industrial vs. regenerative agriculture, and ask ourselves: why do we continue to use food systems that are not only harmful to ourselves, but also to our planet? Especially when there are safer and healthier alternatives to this global crisis? 🧐 The Urban Wild is dedicated to being a part of the solution 🙌🏼. We'll be teaching more ag-tech solutions, including regenerative agriculture, in our summer program. Register with the link in our bio.

I AM HERE FOR THIS. 🙌 . . If you're over on Patreon, you already saw me in sweatpants freaking out about these this morning. 😂 Buggy and waterlogged, these first of the season chanterelles are finally showing up! #betterlatethannever . . Tbh, having the ability to observe this patch on a daily basis (it's maybe a hundred meters from my front door) is a huge part of the reason I'm here. . . As I dive deeper down the rabbit hole of microbes and mycelium and their relationships with plants in the context of building soil, I can't help but wonder if the previous attempts to cultivate difficult wild species (such as chanterelles) discounted microbe partners in the equation. . . When I first began learning about fungi via foraging, a few things seemed pretty clear: some "ate" greens, some "ate" wood, some "ate" the wood eaters' leftovers, some "ate" organic matter of all types (including animals), and some just seemed to exist in the soil but we didn't really know who or what they were eating. . . The Basidiomycota phylum currently accounts for 31,000 living species known, or approximately one third of all fungi (& a huge portion of the ones we regard as choice edibles.) . . I like the idea of "working with" species in this space because most of them tend to have a high natural bias towards out-breeding (upwards of 100%), which is exactly what we want for a hand's off experiment that's focused on microbial replication. . . But more interestingly... . . "Perhaps the structure and organization of the root, soil type, microbial community, or some other combination of biotic and abiotic factors favored ectomycorrhizal fungi over endomycorrhizal forms in certain hosts." -Science Direct . . For my pipe dream, we're looking at solving for "some combination of biotic and abiotic" factors now. 😬 Most attempts (that I know of) for "seeding the woods" with a slurry of spores from finicky fungi species have been hit or miss, save for morels which seem to be popping up in everyone's mulch pile except for mine. 😭 But what if for some, it's more about capturing the spores as they fly pre-harvest, rather than trying to shake them off post-harvest? . . Let's try. For science.🤓
