Our exploration of post-earthquake emergency housing. Our scheme re-purposes materials from the family’s damaged home - such as stones for foundation walls and corrugated sheet metal for roof and wall cladding - to make it affordable and sympathetic to its context. Corn husk is used for insulation. The footprint is compact to maintain the fields for income generating crop. The design is self-sufficient with its own septic toilet, rainwater harvesting and combustion stove. Big thanks 🙏 to the project team @teddy2604 @mattryall_ @emmmaharrison for pulling together this amazing submission together #emergencyhousing #recilience #earthquake #nepal #shelter #emergencyshelter #emergencyarchitecture #designcompetition #render #australianarchitecture #architecture #archdaily #humanitarianarchitecture #selfsufficientliving #offthegrid #tinyhouse

Here’s a question for you...in today’s world, is it possible to be truly self sufficient? And what does self sufficient mean anyway? We grew lots of lovely vegetables this year and our chickens provide us with what feels like an endless supply of eggs!! We plan to raise more chickens next year and have some for the table. Geese for Christmas are also on the agenda. But we are far from growing everything we will want to eat...we don’t have a source of dairy products, we love spices and citrus fruits. Flour and other grains need to be bought in too. We have a mortgage which isn’t going anywhere soon without a lottery win 😕 we have a septic tank that needs emptying, electricity to be supplied and that giant gas tank doesn’t fill itself. So what are we aiming for? Genuine question here lovely people I’d love to know your views...do you aim to be self sufficient?? #dorsetdiaries #selfsufficient #selfsufficiency #selfsufficientliving #growyourownfood #growyourown #vegetables #veggiepatch #dorset #dorsetlife #smallholding #smallholdinguk #smallholderlife #countryliving #countrylivinguk #countrylife #countrylifestyle #countryhouse #escapetothecountry #livingthedream #livingthegoodlife #goodlife #rurallife #homestead #homesteadlife #countryblogger #lifestyleblogger

It’s snowy outside and I’m under the weather, so it follows that I’m missing my summer garden. Having my second child and being more exhausted than I thought possible meant that I didn’t spend nearly as much time tending and loving the garden as I wanted. I didn’t get to take photos of my green babies like I wanted to. Finding time and balance between the people I cherish and the things that make me thrive is an ongoing challenge. Giving myself the freedom to create and be myself is an ongoing challenge. . . . The projects and dead leaves and squirrel-nibbled produce piled up and I still haven’t cleared the detritus and bamboo poles. I was hoping we would make it to a bigger space where I could have a huge dedicated herb garden just for Sage & Thistle, but as it stands I have lots of planning and work to do for the Spring. I’ll be on the lookout for new organic herb seeds and cuttings, as well as expanding my collection of frequently used favorites. Excited for seed exchanges and chats with other gardeners as we head into the dark season. . . . #gardendreams #organicgardening #organicherbfarmdream #selfsufficientliving #organicherbs #lavenderfields #whitesagefields #mintflowers #thymelawn #chamomilefordays #iwantagreenhouseplease #organicvegetables #artisanship #coldprocesssoap #homegrown #handmade #stoopgarden #momandpopshop #sageandthistlehandmadegoods #sageandthistle

This is the intended front yard for the cabin rebuild. There’s a Grand Solar Minimum coming, but there is some sunspot evidence that we are going to get one more 11 year sunspot cycle before the GSM hits full-force. Good thing. Funds to rebuild the cabin have, of necessity, been spent on cannabis compliance, so there’s no money for that or this greenhouse either. But it’s coming. #tropicalgreenhouse #solarminimum #solarcycle24 #solarcycle25 #GSM #grandsolarminimum #spaceweather #bettersafethansorry #selfsufficientliving #permaculture #bioshelter #prepper @heartrockmountainfarm #mendofarms #middlemountain #pottervalley #emeraldtriangle #caligrown

Size matters. Especially when it comes to stove flues. So I've got myself a big one. From the top of the stove to the top of the cowl measures 3 metres, and it's all double skin (insulated). People spend a lot of time and money choosing and buying their stove but the flue/chimney is often an afterthought. It is, in fact, just as important, if not more important than the stove design itself. The stove requires air to burn. It gets that from the ambient air pressure forcing air into the fire box. However, this only happens if the flue creates a draw, negative pressure. The heat from the stove makes the flue gases less dense than cold ambient air, so the flue gases rise up the flue allowing air to be forced into the stove. The longer the flue, the more momentum the gases build up, which means the greater the draw. If heat is taken from the flue (via having only a single skin for example), the flue gases contract, become more dense and slow down which reduces the draw. With inadequate draw, you get smoke. Smoke is nothing more than incomplete combustion - wasted money. If you suffer from the hot head and cold feet syndrome in your boat, insulate your flue. You'll get more heat from the same quantity of fuel and in a better place. . Apologies for the geeky lecture. Just had to get it off my chest. Also, I have a few local traditionalists who are mocking me, so I thought it good to justify my big pipe 😂. P.S. It does detach easily for under bridge manoeuvres. #offgrid #selfsufficiency #widebeam #selfsufficientliving #stovedesign #stoveflue #narrowboat

Seven years ago our dream started. To move to Sweden and live in the countryside. Five months ago I found a job. Our first step. Three months ago we moved to a city hous. Our second step. And today we moved to a rental house in the countryside. Our third step. Now we are going to find a house with a little land to buy and begin building our country life. #livetpålandet #sverige #ytterberg #homesteading #selfreliance #backyardfarming #countrylife #outdoorlife #outdoors #woodworking #hunting #jakt #sweden #fromscratch #fromfieldtofork #fieldtofork #forest #självhushållning #selfsufficientliving #homecooking #selfreliance #foresttofork #skogen #foraging #kniv #knife

A writing prompt from @raisinglittleshoots sparked an amazing story! . Miss 9 has recently been inspired by @dwalliams collection of books and each month we go to @waterstones to buy another book 📚 . We nearly have a full collection and I can see letting her read to midnight is really showing in her creativity. . This has also reminded me that Miss 9 isn’t a tv watcher or screen enthusiast and we are discussing removing the tv from the house to focus on family time without it. . Does our love for technology prevent us from our creative selves? . . . . . #writers #raisingreaders #bookish #earlyreaders #welovebooks #davidwalliamsbooks #readallnight #midnightreading #favouriteauthor #writersofinsta #youngauthor #childhoodunplugged #inspirational #simplefamilyliving #selfsufficientliving #followingthesunnah #waterstones #creativewriting #writingprompts #raisinglittleshoots #curriculum #homeschooling #homeeducation #hyggehomeschool #bloggermum #abeautifulchildhood #youngwriters #hyggelig

I’ve never been so excited for kitchen storage/meal prep containers! I’ve wanted glassware for year to use for breakfast and lunches but it’s always been and seemed so expensive, it just felt out of reach! But now the only teaching I’ll be doing is to the shelf where they all live! I haven’t worked out the plan for our old plastic containers yet, but we are going to phase them out as consciously as possible!

If you are a high school kid who has aspirations on going off to college and functioning without Mom and Dad, I suggest learning to make basic healthy meals and meal prep or become a chef 👨‍🍳 (up to you 🤷🏻‍♂️), balance a checkbook, & do your own laundry. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When you are off at school and cramming for finals, trying to balance your sport...that can be overwhelming. The last thing you want is stress from not being able to cook, dealing with a messy place🧹, needing Mom to do your laundry🧺. Home sick will be a guarantee. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And you never know...you might marry someone who burns everything they try to make (like my wife @ashprieto. 🤦🏻‍♂️

When I was little we made cut-out cookies every Christmas. My mom was great about letting my brother and I do all the "work". Added to those memories are making them with my kids. Now I can't imagine not making them this time of year. Next week I'll be with my granddaughter so hopefully, she and I will get a chance to make cookies together. Recipe is up on our website, link in bio. Do you have Christmas or holiday traditions that you carried over from your childhood? I'd love to hear about them. ************ #thewellspentday #christmas #christmastraditions. #dayswellspenthomestead   #christmas2018 #familytraditions , #simpleliving #selfsufficientliving #familyfirst #christmascookies #homesteadinglife

More (but slow) progress on my #selfsufficientliving #widebeam. Cutting a hole in the roof for my stove flue. I have finally found something useful to use one of those 4" heat syphons (mushroom vents). I've connecting ducting to one so that the stove can have a dedicated air supply, instead of pulling heated air from the cabin 😁

After a long month of waiting and staring at bare soil and sorry looking stalk, my Lemongrass has finaly sprouted! 😍 Lemongarss is a perenial tropical that is most known for it's many culinary uses. However, the list of benefits far from ends there. This amazing grass is also potent insect repellent, warding of mosquitos and adult white flies, whilst it produces pheromone that conveniently attracts honey bees. And of course it could be used as a herbal remedy. Lemongrass can help prevent the growth of some bacteria and yeast. It is thought to relieve pain and swelling, reduce fever, improve levels of cholesterol and sugar in the blood and have antioxidant properties. In temperate climate this lovely and highly ornamental grass grows as an anual and I love to plant it near tomatoes and brasicas to reap the most benefits. Whilst I do have Lemongrass seeds, this one is grown from store bought stalk after I used the most of it for cooking. #lemongrass #permacultureplants #permaculturelife #insectrepellent #beefriendly #tropicalherbs #selfsufficientliving

So begins this seasons task of hanging and curing our years supply of garlic! 186 heads in total harvested. 22 heads were grown from our own grown cloves we saved from last season. We grew enough this season to be able to save all our required seed cloves for next season. Making next years harvest 100% self sufficient 😀 #homegrowngarlic #organicgarlic #urbanhomestead #bartereconomy #sustainableliving #sustainability #selfsufficient #selfsufficiency #selfsufficientliving #homesteading #eatlocal #eatclean #foodismedicine #growfood #foodisfree #growyourownfood #growfoodnotlawns #cashlesseconomy #comminitygarden #permaculture #organicgardening #homemade #bushcraft #preserving #bottling #homecanning #jammaking

Sorghum seeds #sorghum #seeds #man #cannot #eat #money #selfsufficient #selfsufficientliving #sorghumseeds #available sorghum has been, for centuries, one of the most important staple foods for millions of poor rural people in the semiarid tropics of Asia and Africa. For some impoverished regions of the world, sorghum remains a principal source of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals. Sorghum grows in harsh environments where other crops do not grow well, just like other staple foods, such as cassava, that are common in impoverished regions of the world. It is usually grown without application of any fertilizers or other inputs by a multitude of small-holder farmers

KEEPING CHICKENS🐔 If you have been thinking about getting chickens, whether you live in the country or the city (if your city allows backyard chickens), then I think it's a commitment you should make! Here are my top five reasons to have chickens: 1.) Eggs! Of course, the biggest draw for having chickens is having a continuous supply of fresh eggs; and even better is knowing that your eggs are coming from happy chickens! 2.) Reduce your food waste. Redirect some of your food waste to your chickens instead of the trash can. Leafy green cuttings, apple and carrot peels, berries and tomatoes too soft for my liking are just a few of the things I redirect to my chickens. 3.) Relatively low maintenance. Chickens, for the most part, are pretty easy to take care of. Though, like most animals in Alberta, they need a little extra attention during the cold Winter season. 4.) Garden helpers. Chickens can be great helpers when it comes to gardening! Place them in your garden and they will naturally till your soil, eat bugs and weeds, and add some of their own compost! 5.) All of the above reasons lead to you living a more sustainable, eco,-friendly and self sufficient life! And on a complete side note, this picture makes me miss Summer! . . . #chickens #chickensofinstagram #keepingchickens #homesteading #acreagelife #sustainable #sustainableliving #greenliving #countryliving #ecofriendly #selfsufficientliving #lifestyle #sustainablelifestyle #alberta #yyc #airdrie

Our friend Jim is bailing his Alfa alfa hay. Jasper the dog, is finding the whole thing rather boring. I love that dog! Making a good hay is matter of good judgement and bit of a luck with the weather. Jim has both and his hay is beautifull. Shame his bailer has broken down just minutes after this photo was taken. #haybaling #hay #selfsufficientliving #farmlife #farming

Until about 1930's Okanagan valley was inhospitable dessert, supporting only few resiliant types of grasses and white sage brushes in the summer. This is, today an obstolete, part of the original irrigation system that helped to turn Okanagan from dessert into prime region for fruit growing and wine production. It was fully self-sufficient and powerd only by gravity, delivering water from nearby lake across the valley on the countour of the hill sides. Genious idea that could still be applied today to improve the potencial of many challenging properties with just a little bit of planning. Today we mostlu use swales to deliver water where needed but this system is not really all that different. We still have so much to learn from the past generation when it comes to self sufficiency. #irrigation #irrigationsystem #wateringtheplants #selfsufficientliving #commonsense
