Nothing beats an over night spring rain to water the plants 🌱 Ive never appreciated the rain like I do now to water all those precious veggies and fruit trees , my front yard has a long road ahead untill it's fully established, but like they say nothing happens over night and it requires great patience , time commitment and money and everything is one step at a time to create a bigger picture but I am proud of how far I've come since purchasing my house with the passion to turn my house into an urban food Forrest and I understand things will be slower for me as working single mother of 4 but we will get their 😇 for their is so much I would love to do to our home but as they say take one step at a time 🌿🌱🍆 #selfsufficientliving #harvest #onestepatatime #foodforest #growfoodnotlawns #growyourownfoods #vegtablegardening #gardenchat #homegrown #homegarden #smallsteps #bigpicture #foucus #passion #lifegoals #lifessimplepleasures #veggiegardening #urbanfarm #spring

Can you believe this is right in the city of Vancouver? We have been visiting these little ladies for close to 3 years now (when we discovered them). There strained rules as how many can be kept and I'm pretty sure no roosters allowed, but this is how life can be lived, even in a metropolis such as Vancouver, these people have an incredible set up of fruit trees, garden, rain collection etc. Who needs to go out of town to be self sufficient? #nomadiclife #nomadicmovement #vancrush #vandreams #vanlifers #vandwellers #rvlife #rvliving #rvca #fulltimerv #pnwlife #tinyhomeadventure #tinyhomes #vancouvervanlife #vancouverbccanada #selfsufficient #selfsufficientliving

Gardening is such a pleasure! I’m only at the beginning stages of learning and am looking forward to trying new plants next year. Our peppers are still going strong. I picked the final tomatoes, which are green. So we will definitely be having fried green tomatoes this week. How is your garden doing? Will you transition to a winter garden? . . . . . #mexipeppers #bananapeppers #mint #basil #jalapenos #greentomatoes #fresnochiles #freshpeppers #chilipeppers #chilipeppers #harvesttime #homesteadersofinstagram #backtoedengarden #permaculture #backtotheland #homesteadhustle #abundance #homestead #homesteading #hobbyfarm #farmstead #authenticlife #selfsufficientliving #modernhomesteader #growwhatyoueat #middletennessee #5DogFarm #gobigorgohomestead #ruralbliss #rusticrevival

It doesn’t look like much at this time of year but what’s left of the garden has been tucked in with anticipation of our first frost tonight. Kale will do just fine (if not improve in flavor) when unprotected, but we’ve covered our carrots, peas, Swiss chard, fennel, spinach and lettuce, radishes and beets. Saying goodbye to the cucamelons, beans, and especially the peppers is bittersweet.

Went to collect the eggs and thought this girl was still laying. Nope she's gone clucky and has claimed the nest and all its eggs! Funny thing has only just started laying and is already clucky. I took the eggs away but I'll get her some other eggs to sit on. Personally I don't agree with "broody prison" if a hen or any female animal for that matter to wants to be mother who am I do deny them? I don't believe in fighting nature and the bonus is she can raise some chickens for me #chickens #chickensofinstagram #broodyhen #babychicks #eggs #farm #farmer #farmher #farmlife #farminglife #nzfarm #nzfarmer #nzfarming #selfsufficientliving #selfsufficient #selfsufficiency #livingofftheland #livestock #homesteading #maggielil

I cleaned out the chickens and gave there chicken pen a lick of Cuprinol, Sea Grass Green. This will protect it through winter. The dampness and humidity these wet days are providing can be a breeding ground for pests. There are many products out there to combat this but they basically are all diatomaceous earth. A trick I learnt from my poultry days when we had a few hundred chickens was this stuff. We use it for everything, we splash it everywhere when we clean them out, we put it in there dust baths and there food. It also worms them it acts as prevention and cure. #chickens #hens #layinghens #thegoodlife #selfsufficient #selfsufficientliving #fresheggs #homesteading

Soapmaking seemed too intimidating for years. I never thought I’d be making it regularly, let alone creating my own recipes. But, like most things, once you try it then it’s really not that difficult at all. Here’s my favorite for fall—Flannel. Scented with pine, sandalwood and a touch of bourbon. Very manly but definitely for girls too. ❤️

Well, that’s a wrap for me! The end of Garden 2018 (except for some Brussel sprouts that like the cold). I dug the sweet potatoes over the weekend in a winter weather mix, and got the rest out today. Every year I say I’ll plant a fall garden and then I never do. 😂 There’s always next year, right? ✨✨ Favorites from my garden this year include the little orange Yum Yum peppers and the sweet potatoes. I’m taking a few green tomatoes inside to ripen and that’s it for garden harvests for me. . ✨✨ Now it’s time to prep the garden for 2019 - including mowing down the weeds and wildflowers and covering the garden with cardboard and tarps. Dan and I mulched up a ton of sticks and tree branches (take a look at my stories!) we’ve been collecting for a while and that will go down too! . ✨✨ Then I need to plant garlic and tulip bulbs and I can start planning the layout for next year!! I’m still trying to decide if I will start seeds next year or not. I’m leaning toward not!! What’s going on in your garden right now?? #organicgardener #iamcountryside #homesteadlife

Laney and Piper, my two mischievous Dwarf Nigerian goats. I had plans to breed these two so we could get milk but after talking to a friend it sounds like they are too old now, life happened and time got away from me. We have geese on our farm for their natural watchdog abilities. There was a time where we were losing a duck to a fox about every two to three weeks. Since we’ve integrated the geese into our flock we’ve not lost one under their watch. Camilla and Big Bev here lead the ducks out to the field.

A peacock egg, a store bought egg, and in the upper left corner an egg from our girls. She is young and this was one of her first eggs, The taste is amazing, and no store bought egg compares. Our year long project of partnering with @chismetortilla to grow ancient grain corn for tortilla making came to fruition today and it was fantastic. We learned soooo much about yield and the potential to feed a family by raising this drought tolerant grain corn. And, it tastes amazing and looks beautiful. Our first big apple harvest!! I’d have to check to be certain, but I think we planted our little orchard in 2012. We’ve had a rough time with it. 2 years ago we lost a loaded peach tree after a bad storm, and we’ve lost both our pear trees too. This year we had a horrible time with Japanese beetles and our other apple tree suffered a lot. I hope it comes back next year. We did have a nice cherry harvest this year and are so excited about these apples!! We added new peach and pear trees two years ago and they’re looking good now but it will probably be a few more years before we see fruit. I hope we are reaching the turning point where some of these long term investments will start producing more regular food to feed our family!! It makes me happy to take control of our own food. Now, what should we make with all these apples?? 🍎 🍏 🍏🍎 . . . #growyourfood #appleharvest #goldendeliciousapple #heirloomapples #heirloomfruit #appleseason #treesofantiquity #homesteadorchards #anappleaday #homesteadlife #falliniowa #igers_midwest #igers_iowa #selfsufficientliving #selfsufficiency #eatlocalgrown #iamcountryside

As the fall colours settle in and we’re greeted by morning frost, our Winter Density lettuce from @westcoastseeds seem completely unfazed. No hoop houses or mulching yet and they’re still going strong. Thank goodness for a warm sunny fall!

There was a gorgeous ornamental garden tucked next to our house when we moved in. It was well protected from deer and even has its own water source. After three summers though, tending to and pruning/weeding ornamental garden plants just never made the priority list. I did need a space for my berry patch that offered protection from animals and was easy to water though. It was decided we could make much better use of this space as a berry patch. We’ve planted 10 blueberries, 5 cranberries and 5 aronia berries—all sourced from a local farm. I’ve also added two elderberry bushes so far. I’m excited to see this space develop.

Every time this tree blooms we always get high winds and we get petals everywhere! Its my warning, the days have started to get warmer and it's tempting to plant the summer garden but I know when this tree blooms well get a cold spell so this wise tree is telling me to be patient and wait it out a couple more weeks. #blooms #cherrytreeblossom #garden #inthegarden #gardening #gardenersofinstagram #spring #summergarden #organic #orgaicgardening #selfsufficiency #selfsufficient #selfsufficientliving #livingofftheland #homesteading #maggielil

It’s apple pressing day in our neighbourhood! Everyone gleans the fruit from their trees and brings it to the local fairgrounds to have it pressed into fresh juice. Thousands of pounds of apples and pears will be pressed in the next two days. A great way to keep getting your vitamin C throughout the winter when local fresh fruit is no longer available.

Finnegan and I out for an evening ride. He surprised me yesterday—we galloped uphill at full speed and he was so excited he bucked a little bit when we reached the top. Not like he was trying to throw me... more like a meathead-guy-pumped-up kind of thing. Still, I’ll be correcting that... not a good habit to make!

This afternoon, after returning from my grocery shopping, became a gardening session. Topped up the soil in a few of my plants, spread some bark over one of my gardens, and the following projects. My new "baby" I adopted earlier this week. (Thanks Mum and Dad.) Re-planted in a bigger pot with more soil/room, so hopefully will live a long fruitful life (and maybe bear fruit if I'm super lucky...) Yes it's leaning, but hoping once it adapts to its new home it might align itself a little more... Otherwise I'm happy to stick with a lopsided plant. Lol. . These tubs were left from the previous owners in my shed from old Lite'n'easy orders. Yes, they are styrofoam, which is why I have been so reluctant to throw them out and have desperately been trying to come up with a use for them. The idea finally came to me a few weeks ago of turning them into beds. I was going to turn them into foam wicking beds, but changed my mind this time round. So today, I poked holes in the bottom, filled them with soil and peat seed raising mix, and in one I planted a couple of potatoes that had grown roots in my cupboard (I did already have plans to do that at some stage), carrots in the middle one and beetroot in the other. . Also on the subject of repurposing, prior to the unit going on sale, the window screens were all replaced, with the old ones again shoved in the shed. So I am utilising those as well, covering the beds to stop birds from trying to eat the shoots. And to assist with adequate drainage, the boxes are sitting on leftover bricks from whoever laid my verandah area. . #veggiegarden #vegetablegarden #ediblegarden #garden #gardenista #gardening #turningbrownthumbsgreen #veggiepatch #organicgardening #mygarden #selfsustainablelivinggoals #homegrown #selfsufficientliving #selfsustainablelivinggoals #repurpose #reuse #waronwaste #recycle #monsteradeliciosa #potatoes #carrots #beetroot #plants #plantlife #plantmum #springgarden #springgardening

Was trying not to be nosey but I think we have some romancing going on, she was showing signs of coming into cycle and now lots of flirting is happening so hopefully that means in about 9 months well have another baby. This is Olive who lost her calf earlier this year so keen to get her pregnant again as she's pinning for another baby even though she has an adopted baby she's still trying to steal everyone else's baby's including the neighbours bobby calves... #cows #cowsofinstagram #calves #housecow #milkingcow #livestock #farm #farming #farmer #farmher #farmlife #onthefarm #nzfarming #nzfarm #nzfarmer #livingofftheland #selfsufficiency #selfsufficient #selfsufficientliving #homesteading #maggielil

I have been tickled to be reading these amazing books by @farmsteadmeatsmith ! There have been a lot of Wow! Ah-ha! and Ohhhh moments in following along. There are so many descriptions and beautiful photos (along with humorous commentary) that help give a visual of a successful day of harvest. The only thing.....I’m not sure I can get past the blood sausage. 😂 I mean- all the cream in the world doesn’t make it seem more appetizing. Oh well. I’m sure I would try it anyway if it were in front of me. I love these books! Thank you Lauren and Brandon for these wonderful giveaway gifts! . Our stash of gourds for the root cellar. It’s less than I’d hoped, and we’ve already used some, but I’m grateful for each one. We have Long Island cheese pumpkins, crookneck, Blue Hubbard, butternut and a spaghetti. Actually the Spaghetti squash is still from last year!

The reality... instagram is all about good photos and this is just a photo of the harvest from today but it is hard work behind it. I’m alone on the farm for a few days and working at another farm during the day so that means that I have to take care of all the animals and veggie patch myself before and after work. I’m actually sick of broccoli and don’t really have the energy to take care of this harvest. It’s not always a paradise but I probably need to just let it be and don’t stress too much. //Anna #lagomfarm #veggiepatch #kitchengarden #selfsufficientliving #livingourdream

We have been drenched by the peripheral clouds of Hurricane Michael today. The already saturated ground can’t hold much water and our stable is quickly becoming a pond. Our river is cresting and the hillsides have formed little rivers and waterfalls. Though we are completely soaked, our heavy rain is nothing compared to what those are dealing with who’ve been left in the storm’s wake. Our thoughts and hearts go out to those affected.
