Endurance is not only for those running long distances, but also for those going through injuries and setbacks. Not only does one have to endure the long journey to recovery, but they also endure the slow process back to being healthy. That’s why we’re always amazed by the resiliency of our teammates who are recovering from injuries. Rachel Fox, a QDR member since 2015, broke her ankle earlier this year, has gone through Open Reduction Internal Fixation surgery, and will now permanently have seven metals screws in her ankle. (PART TWO) The truth is we are all undefeated up to this point. We have all encountered the storm and we are still here to talk about it. It’s hard to find the blessing in that sometimes. For me at least. But we have to. My most commercially successful record (Alive) came at what had been my lowest point. I had ZERO money. Was living with my grandma. All confidence was lost. Insecurities at an all time high. I turned around and wrote a song that put the opposite emotions into the universe. To y’all it sounded like the happiest, most positive shit of all time. But when I hear that song or see that video, I see a younger me that was GOING THROUGH IT. I have many examples of resilience but I use that one in particular because it’s a visual example that I can point you too. And it’s real (Really Real 😜). I turned my darkest moment into arguably my biggest highlight UP TO THIS POINT (let’s be clear). I’ve already proven my resilience so I have no excuse if I just let myself die. I’ve been Lebron down 3-1 in the finals many times and walked out with a ring. Nobody can tell me shit. I do dope shit. Dope shit will always come from that. That goes for y’all too. FIGURE IT OUT. Just have comfort in knowing you have at least one other person out there doing the same.

The question I get asked the most is "How did/do you stay so positive and happy?" ☺️ The answer is simple, I choose to be. Our mind is such a powerful tool and while we don't always have control over the hand we've been dealt, we sometimes forget that we have the power to make it into something meaningful and maybe even beautiful 💜 When I was so sick , facing an unknown future, I made a promise to myself, to embrace and enjoy every single day because it's a blessing not a right. While some days this was a habit and became second nature I'd be lying if I said there weren't and aren't still days where I have to consciously pick myself up, dust myself off and refocus my mind. Weeks ago when I was verbally attacked by a random stranger, this was basically my response. And I stand by that today. It’s exhausting that people make claims of being Anti-Bullying when they perpetuate behaviors that are very much bullying. And same for those who make claims of being involved in Human Rights. This goes across the board. For everyone. I know educating ourselves can be viewed as exhausting, I understand- because I feel that sometimes too. However, most days, I thank our Creator for giving me the ability to change myself if needed, and giving me a strong body, mind and soul to do so. Day 23/30 **this is part of a 30 day daily improv challenge** . . . Prompt: Hand-Dance with a stranger. . Ok, I tried to get a stranger to do this with me. Specifically a barista who made my post-landing-in-Chicago-for-InterPlay-Leaders-Training coffee. But he said wasn’t in the mood. The spot was decked out with these tiny strange so they are my stranger hands. . This prompt brought up questions around identity and privilege for me. As a white woman I have used my privilege to interact with strangers for many things, notably a few years where I used almost no money and hitch-hiked, dumpster dove, couchsurfed. I felt relatively safe (obviously there was fear of sexual violence, but that’s another post) and confident that strangers would give me things. This prompt brought me back to those days of hitchhiking, when I started to realize that my ability to live “without money” was actually reliant on my racial privilege and how white women are positioned as innocent, save-able victims. Am I sorry that I have been able to navigate the world through the generosity of strangers? No, that was beautiful and life-affirming. YOU GET TO CREATE IT THE WAY YOU WANT 💥🔥👌.... . I forgot this a few years back with one of my companies. Ended up in charge of something that was completely misaligned with my original vision. And it only took about 18 months😲 There were a lot of quite subtle things, small decisions, saying yes to opportunities that didn’t quite fit, feeling under pressure to do things a certain way without really knowing the full facts, making a few bad investments...and I have to admit that throughout all of it my leadership was lacking. Partly at least down to that disconnect with my vision, I began leading by default rather than from the front🤦‍♀️ . It’s easy to think that visions or mission statements are something you do once and barely look at again. And yet that experience taught me the importance of having a strong, clear purpose and vision. Not that it can’t evolve or change as your company grows, but that if it does it should be with the full support and conscious choice of the founder. It taught me to voice my concerns and ask the right questions. And most of all it taught me to take responsibility for how I was showing up as a leader - which was great as it turned out because I then knew very clearly which skills I needed to work on in my next business. . When you look down and your shoes match.... how often am I sitting next to someone whose story matches my own? I may never know. The details may be different, but the feelings we experience are the same. When a survivor tells me her story and I hear her describe the trauma, I can’t help but feel triggered. I want to be fully present for her words. Listening. Hanging on every word. I don’t want to make it about me. But, it is so very hard. As she speaks, I feel my mind begin to wander. Blurred memories come floating in. I try to bat them away... but the more I push back, the stronger they come. And the stronger they come the more real they feel. Tiny details emerge from the fuzzy snippets. What his hands felt like. What he whispered in my ear. The smell of his sweat. It makes me feel sick. It makes me feel angry. Not angry at him, but angry at myself. Angry that I can not make the memories go back to the far reaches of my mind. Angry that I am not fully engaged in listening to her as she shares her experience. Angry that I am making it about me. And then my anger turns to fear. And my fear turns to flight. I have to leave. I have to get out of here. But I won’t. I won’t walk out. I won’t leave. I will listen... but I can not stay in this space. I can’t deal with these memories. I have to escape. All I can focus on is the fear I will remember more. And I don’t want to remember more. I am terrified I’ll remember more. I have to get out of here. I have to go. Don’t cry. Don’t do it. Just be still. And so I do the only polite thing I know how to do in this moment. I disassociate. My body becomes numb and I shut down. I am still. My body is still and my mind continues to race. I am making eye contact. I hear my mouth uttering phrases of encouragement and reassurance. But I am not here. I hate that. And it makes me hate myself. How could I be so cold? So reserved? How could I? But how could I not be? Something was stolen from and I until now, I couldn’t name it. I have been robbed of the hope of ever being fully present. I have been robbed of loving myself in totality. There will always be that dark space. Between the ears. That I simply refuse to love.

Transition . Autumn stimulus is vibrant death. As a child while everyone around me marveled at the magnificence of changing leaves, I observed them quizzically, viewing their vigorous hue as a way to give life their all before demise. I wondered how they could have so much chutzpah at the end. . I still experience Autumn as a confusing time, because I’ve always held onto things and have had trouble letting go. Leaving a lover or friend behind for me is like a burdock burr attached to a wool sweater. Autumn leaves have me face the reality that change is inevitable, letting go is part of life, and that transformation can be beautiful. . I am trying to practice that reality as I move, yet again. Victim self comes out, as my inner child freaks out about doing this life, in a sense, on my own. It seems I’m at an AA meeting all day long, only I instead introduce myself as “Hi I’m Elizabeth, And I’m A Victim 👋🏾”. . People have often gifted me affirmations specifically for being a single womyn who has her shit together. Friends tell me how without their partners, they wouldn’t know how they would have done all they’ve done, and they stand in awe of my accomplishments as a single womyn. And to them I say, “and it’s been a shit show of a ride, let me tell you.” . There’s a beauty to my intricacy. Each day I interact with patterns, with opportunities for transformation, with grace and synchronicity, and with shadow. My greatest wish for this next cycle as I make my home in a new location, on new land and on my own, is that I make it the best experience I possibly can. What does that mean? I heal. I serve. I let God move through me and all around inside me. That’s the gist. . Let the leaves continue their swirl, reminding me the dance is not always as it seems, but beautiful nonetheless.

ACTS OF KINDNESS I was at a market this week and it had a small collection of beads from Nepal. It reminded me of a colourful local market that I visited in Namche Bazar in the Himalayas. We were trekking to Everest Base Camp and the altitude was knocking me about, every part of me was aching and I felt sick. To distract myself, I went to the local markets where there were beautiful locally made goods, bracelets and necklaces. Happily bartered for some bargains which cheered me up. The fondest memory though was of the host family in our tea house. Seeing I was unwell, they made me special tea for nausea and entertained me by teaching me Bollywood dancing. Nothing like a laugh to make you forget your woes ( or altitude sickness). A few days later, higher in the mountains, my altitude sickness became very unpleasant. Once again, a kind stranger helped me. A Japanese tour guide that I met gave me some altitude medicine which worked wonderfully AND then made me a delicious Japanese dinner. He wanted to practice his English, so we then sat around the fire talking for hours. Experiences like this are not unusual, but they are great reminders about the many kind people there are in the world. Whenever I encounter a traveller in Sydney that needs help, I remember these kind people when I was struggling in a foreign land, and offer a hand. Something to think about.
