Yesterday’s #shishitopeppers harvest from one plant that has been my most prolific pepper plant this year. They are tasty, mildly spicy, East Asian peppers that are delicious served charred. Seeds from @gardening_kristi ! I don’t know why but all the rest of the varieties of peppers I planted just aren’t producing that much. I’m hoping we have a couple more warm days to ripen everything up. Also pictured is another week’s #harvest of Ashley cucumbers. Cucumbers always do really well in my garden and I have picked a lot this year already off only three plants. Perhaps they like that it is partially shaded and gets a good amount of water. #chicago #chicagogarden #chicagogardens #urbangarden #urbanorganicgardener #organic #peppers #growyourown #growsomethinggreen #growyourgreens #sustainableliving #raisedbedgarden #containergardening #homestead #urbanhomesteading #urbanhomestead #learningasigrow #plantstagram #organicgardening #womanwhogrow #healthylifestyle #vegetables #raisedbedgardening #vegetablegarden

Peppers! 💚🌶💚 Working with these hot guys today. Making a few more hot pepper pickles and drying the rest for pepper flakes. This is pretty much the end of the hot peppers for the season - cue sadness. You know we like it spicy around here. Time to break out the hand protection and get busy. Hope your day is fiesta worthy! 💚🌶💚 ... #kitchengarden #summerheat #raisedbeds #raisedbedgarden #hotpeppers #fiestaparty #preserving . . . . #urbangarden #urbanorganicgardener #urbangardenersrepublic #sowtrueseed #thehappygardeninglife #eatseasonal #greenliving #growfood #organicgarden #gardentotable #hortas_jardins #lovegardeners #tractorsupply #gardenlife #californiagarden #vegetablegarden #potager #gardenharvest #redandgreen

Pumpkins and squashes have been harvested. A lots of things are still going strong, but Autumn is definitely touching the garden now. I’ve started to lift the plants that are coming to their natural end, and get the veg beds ready for winter. The good thing about having the raised beds, is that it’s never overwhelming, I just do one bed at a time. Like most things, I like to keep gardening simple 🎃 #raisedbedgarden #kitchengarden #growyourownfood #autumn #pumkinpatch #simplify #simplelife

Summer meets winter. The Malabar spinach seeded in late Spring are still growing SLOWLY but at least they’re climbing the trellis. Can’t really tell you what brassicas are planted here because I dropped the entire tray of the homegrown starts and they got mixed up and all look alike 🤔...what I do know is that they’re a mix of broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. I probably planted them too closely but I figured there’s always a few that may not make it so I’ll thin them out later...survival of the fittest! • • • #nofilter #malabarspinach #brassicas #growsomethinggreen #homegrown #growyourown #organicgardening #gardening #garden #vegetablegarden #raisedbeds #raisedbedgarden #summergarden #fallgarden #wintergarden #backyardgarden #homegarden #urbanorganicgardener #urbangarden #suburbangarden #epicgardening #lovegardeners #getgrowing #zone9 #zone9b #californiagarden

Happy second day of #Mabon to all my fellow northern witches! ^_^ . Apart from all the fun I've had turning my eggplant harvest into a meal and all the baking I intend to do today (peasant bread and apple crisp! :D), the theme I really connected to for Mabon is the idea that it's time to take stock of what you need and let go of the things that no longer serve you. It's a time to turn your thoughts inward, preparing for the cold months to come. . So, in a very concrete way, I took that thought to my garden the other night. I cleared out a marigold bush that was lovely, but getting in the way of me even seeing my most productive eggplant plant. I cleared out half the nasturtium, as well. (The other half will probably go soon, too. It's getting very weedy and overgrown down underneath and I don't want to give those weeds an excuse to take hold in my raised beds. :P) I also harvested the remainder of my sage to turn into smoke cleansing sticks and pulled out the basil that never really grew and was turning brown. Overall, the beds look much healthier, now! . My next goal (though this will take MUCH longer), is to tackle the giant mess that my room currently is so that I can set up a proper altar space. Anyway, I hope you're all having a wonderful Mabon, as well, and for all your southern witches, I hope you had a lovely Ostara! I'll enjoy the cool weather for you, if you enjoy the warm weather for me? ^_~ . #greenwitch #greenwitchcraft #witchesofinstagram #witchywoman #witchythings #witchaesthetic #witchyaesthetic #witchlife #witchylife #earthwitch #raisedbeds #raisedbedgarden #raisedbedgardening #growfromseed #growyourownfood #marigold #marigolds #flowers #flowergarden

Fun fact: marigold is an awesome companion plant for any garden. They're easy to grow, make any garden look nice, AND attract beneficial insects to protect your nearby plants. Also after you've pruned them, their flowers are edible or use them for decoration. Plus the remaining leaves and stems are fantastic composting material. _ #TheRustyPrinciple #atx #texas #austin #summer #veggies #squarefootgardening #organic #backyard #homegarden #homegardening #raisedbedgarden #bellpeppers #soyardmuchlocal #homegrown #flowers #marigold #edible

Surprisingly not too shabby harvest of cucumbers today. The vines look pretty dead but I keep finding cucumbers so I'm leaving them alone for now. Cherry tomatoes are still producing decent amounts every other day.

My kiddo loves pulling dead plants up by the root ball. Today when he pulled up the delicata squash it unearthed some mini zucchini that have been growing but buried under a cluttered garden. I wondered why it had stopped producing. It hadn’t! We left it and the pole beans planted because both are still producing along with the herbs. The yellow squash was delicious in my salad, and the zucchini will be too. #farmerboy #citygardening #natureboy #proudfarmer #plantcareselfcare #gardentherapy #zucchini #lateharvest #plantergarden #raisedbedgarden #prideandjoy #favoritepersonintheworld #lovehimfiercely

I’ve been trying to slowly bring in houseplants to see what survives. I have 4 cats and they love to mess with my plants so I’ve kinda been against it until recently! I brought home a Cat Palm last month and he is still alive and growing so I’m gonna try adding another plant! I wanna say this is like a fire violet or somthin! Either way! I love it and I’m so ready to add it to my home decor! The colors are perfect for fall!

Happy first day of Autumn! Finally stopped procrastinating and got some fall/winter nursery starts into the big bed. Within minutes our cat and pup decided to play chase and trampled all over the new transplants...damn them 🙄...so up went the hoop cover (take that you little fur balls). In this bed are: ‘Morris Heading’ and ‘Carolina’ Collards. The Morris Heading are suppose to be heat/cold tolerant and slow to bolt and the Carolina can also tolerate full sun so these were planted on the sunnier side of the bed (we’re still sunny and in 80-90F’s). Towards the shady side are ‘Blue Knight’ and ‘Lacinato’ kale...I found that kale did well last year in this shady section so I’m giving it another go. Chives and onions are also in the bed...hoping to deter some pests but having the hoop cover on right after transplant definitely helps! • • • #nofilter #brassicas #growsomethinggreen #homegrown #growyourown #organicgardening #gardening #garden #vegetablegarden #raisedbeds #raisedbedgarden #fallgarden #wintergarden #backyardgarden #homegarden #urbanorganicgardener #urbangarden #suburbangarden #epicgardening #lovegardeners #getgrowing #zone9 #zone9b #californiagarden

This ought to take care of the pill bug problem I’ve been having. Tomorrow I will be figuring out the neem oil thing so I can take care of the white flies. I really don’t like using ANY pest control in my garden, even if it’s all natural organic pesticides because I feel that they hinder the natural order of things.

These beauties are popping out right now. Loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, their health benefits include improved eye health, reduced risk of anemia, and their anti-inflammatory properties are extremely favorable in relieving the pain and swelling associated with severe bone disorders like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. just to name a few. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the background of this photo, you may notice we planted marigolds in with our green peppers. These plants act as our natural bug deterrent so that we can avoid using chemical pesticides. Marigolds help deter beetles, aphids, whiteflies, squash bugs, and other common garden pests when planted next to green peppers, as well as many other crops.

Last #tomatoharvest of the #summer2018 garden! The right bowl all came from ONE plant, which is my favorite tomato so far, the #sunsugartomato. It easily produced 400-500 🍅!!! Tomorrow I will plant three types of lettuce, spinach, and kale in that bed. I had a rough start with this #raisedbedgarden , but it is definitely worth all the hard work and frustration. #kansasgarden

Have you ever grown Snow White cherry tomatoes? I had never heard of them before I ordered the seeds from @the_natural_gardening_company . They have produced about four times as many fruits as any of the other cherry tomato varieties I’m growing. They’re tiny, about half the size of a Sun Gold, and sweet and mild. They turn from green to ivory to translucent yellow. You can see them in comparison to other cherry tomatoes if you swipe. . . . . #cherrytomatoes #snowwhitetomatoes #organicgardening #vegetablegarden #raisedbedgarden

The beauty that is Malabar Spinach! From its luscious purple vines to its thick and hardy leaves, we just can't get enough. Surprisingly this plant is not related to the spinach we know...but it is edible, used to thicken soups, added to stir frys and calms an upset stomach. Go out and try some, or maybe even grow some!

Got most of the broccoli, red mustard, kale, and Brussels sprouts in and planted a row of onions! Planned a bunch of them to hopefully slowly weed out throughout the fall for green onions! Still messing around in the first bed bc it’s sprouting a lot of root veggies rn and caught a little lazy boy sleeping on the job! It’s tough work being a garden kitten apparently!

An in process peek of the to-be potting bench in a corner of the screened porch area that will be a bit of a potting shed work and storage area. ▪️This project started with a flurry of productive procrastination while avoiding homework. It’s now shaping up to be a little longer than 6’ of dedicated garden workspace! It’s nearly finished, just have a few final touches to take on. ▪️This weekend will now be heavily dedicated to math homework. I imagine there’ll be a couple breaks dedicated to garden daydreaming. We are projected to get a whole lot of rain in the next couple weeks, so my garden layout reworking plan may not be a realistic option til the next dry spell. We’ll see...

Happy Friday! For those of us living in the northeast this time of year can be bittersweet for the home gardener. We know it’s going to be a loooooooong time before we get our hands back in the dirt once we prepare and tidy up our gardens for the winter. I also know many who ask themselves...”is all the hard work worth it?” • It is. Especially if you have young children. One of the most valuable lessons you can teach your kids is to grow their own food and food for wildlife, to respect and replenish the earth, and to appreciate the rewards of that hard work. If you think about it, what is there in life other than *breathing* that is *more* important than that? Food | Water | Breath | Earth there is nothing else that matters more, yet...they are the things we constantly put last. • It’s time to make the shift back to what *really* matters. Yes? Are you with me? • • • #gardencoach #kitchengarden #gardendesign #letsgrowsomething #gardeningwithkids #organicgarden #growyourown #eatrealfood #potager #raisedbedgarden #regenerativeagriculture

The sun had set by the time I got home from work, but I could see these beauties gleaming in the dusk: cosmos, Thai basil, beans, shisito peppers, early girl tomatoes, and a Trombetta zucchini that had wound itself in a giant spiral around the wire trellis. 💚 It was a challenge to extricate it. 😂 I've carefully arranged some of the tomatoes so the chewed parts (birds? squirrels? palm rats? 😱😱😱😱😱) aren't visible. #todaysharvest #ilovemygarden #cosmos #trombetta #trombettazucchini #tomatoes #organicgarden #socalgarden #urbangarden #organicproduce #todayinmygarden #flowers #raisedbedgarden #growwhatyoueat #eatwhatyougrow #iloveflowers

Celosia adds vibrant color to your garden/landscaping, is drought tolerant & reseeds easily in the fall. The flower color will lose it's vibrancy and small black seeds will appear all over the flower. This is our raised bed garden where we mistakenly planted extra Celosia a few years ago. Going to try to collect & spread the seeds in a different part of our yard for next year's landscaping. #celosia #celosias #garden #gardenflowers #summerflowers #annual #raisedbedgarden

Burgundy okra! Usually by the time I get home from work the blooms have just started to close. I’ve caught the blooming on the weekend, but never when I have a camera in hand! ▪️These are just about my height now, and still producing slowly and steadily. My dilemma is wanting to clear out the bed to get the frames reoriented and prepped for a fall/winter hoop house experiment. ▪️Everything else in the garden has run its course, save the last bunch of tomatoes waiting to ripen any day now. September is halfway through and the cooler weather is coming! ▪️Take them out? Let them thrive? What do I do?!

In support of the charming cucamelon💚🥒+🍉💚.... There has been some talk that the cucamelon does not live up to its hype. I disagree. For many of us, the anticipation is more than half the pleasure of the garden. These little guys have supplied oodles of it! & now that my good friend Allison @fromthegrange has discovered that they grow from tubers, we need not wait for them to fruit till the fall. The pics on the right show May(when they were sown) to September(the 1st harvest). I have so enjoyed watching the progress of my @bakercreekseeds and now that they are here, a couple things... 1. Eat them when they are the size in my picture. This is their cutest & tastiest moment. Here they taste enough like a cucumber and look enough like a watermelon to be completely delightful! 2. I totally agree with @seedtofork that 1 plant is most definitely enough. These are a quick, refreshing snack, not a regular meal. 3. Watching a giant bumble bee attempt to pollinate this tiny flower is hysterical. Worthy of growing for that alone😂🐝. And 4. The flowers and vines of the cucamelon are so charming, and thus far, pest & disease, and mildew resistant, they would be lovely in a giant whiskey barrel surrounded by those zinnias in my stories and some trailing nasturtiums🎉🎉🎉 #growyourown #eatwhatyougrow #cucamelon #ediblegarden #raisedbedgarden #inmygardentoday #gardenchat #thehappygardeninglife #growsomethinggreen #gardenersworld #gardentime #kitchengarden #prettyyummy #growyourowngardendreams #lucysgardenlife

Summer is definitely drawing to a close but the harvests aren’t stopping quite yet. I’ve still got some potatoes to unearth and borlotti beans to pick and plenty of tomatoes and peppers to harvest too. Almost time to get the beds prepped for the growing season next year but before then I’ve got some onion sets to put in and broad beans to sow that will both be overwintered. I’m looking forward to changing the greenhouse from the tomato fest to cactus house! #greenhouse #harvest #borlottibeans #tomato #tomatoes #potatoes #corn #everyonecangrowtheirown

Feeling specially blessed today to have such a plentiful harvest from the Rodriguez Family Garden. A year ago today Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 and left so many with so little.
