On the weekend, I had my first ever powerlifting meet. It was sooo fun, & now I'm officially addicted!!! đŸ–€đŸŒč ‱ I've been "lifestyle training" for around 8 years(?) & yes, I had strength goals, but those goals weren't powerlifting specific. Of course, I progressed my lifts. But here's the thing about training for fitness, lifestyle, or body composition... If you don't like performing a movement (or if you CAN'T), you don't have to. There's many many other ways to target those areas. ‱ So when I didn't enjoy squatting, I'd use variations. I didn't have a need to get power behind my bench, so it wasn't practised. ‱ Last year I flirted with the idea of powerlifting. This year, I thew myself into it. Since January, I have been squatting x2, benching x3, & deadlifting x1 per week. I HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH THE TRAINING! After working on weaknesses & technique for a solid 10 week training block, a meet popped out of no where... so I took advantage of the opportunity. It was actually good timing, 'cause I got to practice a proper peak & taper before game day. When starting a program or programming someone new the million dollar question is “where do I start weight wise?” The next question is “when do I add weight and how much?” The answer to the first question is start lower than you want to. It is much easier to adjust upward than to try and backtrack a few weeks into a program. For the second question I like to use AMRAP set but this stands for ALMOST as many reps as possible. For example in the first week I programmed this weight for 3x5 reps. On the last set I did as many reps as possible going to a 9RPE meaning I definitely could have done at least one more rep. I got 9 reps so 4 more than was programmed. This tells me I can increase the next workout but I increase the minimum of 2.5kg. Start low, add slow, and don’t miss reps. #almostliftingsomethingdoesntcount

I took an entire month off of deadlifting to recover and allow the muscles in my back & legs to heal up. Came back and was still able to crush some reps at 405lbs! My legs were shaking, grip was a little diminished and my form was definitely a little tight BUT I feel very much accomplished! The fact that this was a PR for me and is now something I’m able to rep with after being off it for an entire month IS PROGRESS! My strength has now significantly increased! Knowing that I went from a wheelchair to this today is enough to bring tears to my eyes! Knowing I have more metal than bone now & I’m able to live this life! I’m powerful, I’m blessed & I’m so thankful! I fight through the pain daily and the results make it all worth it! Never give up on yourself and never give up on chasing your dreams! Limits are only of the mind! Conquer your mind and the body shall follow! Good #deadlift and #hammy session today! Started off with 135lbs-585lbs for triples, doubles at 675 and 705 and then finished with this single @ 760. Wasn’t the cleanest, need to finish stronger on the pull but after talking with a judge buddy of mine, he said it was close but he would give me the âšȘ if he were judging me! Even though this wasn’t the cleanest pull, it’s still a 760 pull in March and that gives me GREAT confidence that an 800lb pull will be in my future for the @uspapower Nationals in June and an over 2000 pound total is on sights as well! Gotta just keep working hard and be more controlled and figure out how to keep the energy going from the ground on up...I always start my pull strong and finish slow, that’s my point of emphasis now. I do have to say the leg shake was gnarly and I also got a gnarly ass nose bleed from the pull as well...so that’s a plus lol. Not too bad for a dude with one good leg lol! Pause Deadlifts, as demonstrated here by @kc_pl can be a very useful tool for cleaning up any flaws in the start position, and also lockout of the deadlift, if used correctly. 10 days post-marathon and my legs are finally starting to work again! . These narrow squats are a little on the sticky side on account of my slipped disc and various other spinal buggery, but they'll do for a first session in weeks. Practise makes badass. . Sister, Sister!! Meet Liz - the other sister that we are profiling this week. Age 60.
