Hip hop and #PopJam to build my confidence. Jazz technique and barre to improve my focus and discipline. Do you believe that what you do in your free time affects how you show up for your career? I do, and here’s why:
2 years ago, I decided to drop into a class called “Pop Jam” @raestudiossf , on week three of @jraesf teaching Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You”. I honestly thought it was going to be an easy-to-follow cardio dance situation, so you can imagine the sheer terror I felt when the other students in this packed class busted out intermediate choreography they had memorized, complete with floorwork and FACE. 😱
I’m not sure why I decided to return after that humiliating and terrifying experience. Maybe because while I was tripping over my feet in confusion, I noticed how much fun everyone else was having. Maybe it was just because the other women in that class looked really cool, like they were in a music video. Whatever it was that inspired me to continue risking my pride and * doing something that I wasn’t naturally good at *, I’m eternally grateful that I pressed on. The following week, we started brand new choreography for Katy Perry “Chained to the Rhythm”, & I hid in the back of class behind this incredible dancer, @annaalexbee , which helped.
Bit by bit, dance class got easier. I’m talking SLOWLY. In fact, 2 years in I’m only now finding it easier to pick up choreo. But the juice is beyond worth the squeeze.
#Dance has taught me so much about myself and others - lessons that extend far beyond the dance studio. Dance teaches me not to quit when I make a mistake, but instead to smile and pick right back up where I left off. It teaches me a multitude of ways to express myself and connect with others. It shows me that strength and grace are interdependent, that what may look effortless is actually a result of discipline and dedication.
Now the cool music video girls from that first class are like family to me. I don’t hide in the back anymore, because even though I know I’m not the best dancer in the class, I’m fully showing up for the experience and giving it my best. Also, I can’t really see without my glasses. 🤣 🖤
