Beautiful but very disappointing scotch bonnet. The plant is huge but the peppers are not hot at all! In fact they are very sweet. So wondering if I have grown a sweet Caribbean pepper rather than a typical scotch? #🌶 #Scotchbonnet #bonneypepper #Caribbeanredpeppers #chili #chillipepper  # tamoshanter  #cachuchapeppers #pepper #growyourown #gardening #gardeningisfun #polytunnel #growingfood #freshsalad #allotment #allotmentlove #allotmentgardening #ilovemyallotment #watford #permaculture #sustainability #earthmother #earthmotherlush

Well, there’s meant to be a path there 🤔 Paul has fitted a couple of straining wires along the sides of the tunnel now, so it’s time to start tidying this jungle up a bit! I managed to get around 1/10th done tonight, it took ages to find the main stems of the plants, eliminate the non-fruiting sideshoots and clear out the older leaves to get some air circulating and some sunshine to the fruits. Hopefully now I’ve made a start, I can get going and tackle another big chunk each evening #heirloomtomatoes #tomatoplants #polytunnel #polytunnelgrowing #jungleinthemaking

Ta-da! The IKEA kit from hell! I kid, I kid... it's not from IKEA and I've never actually been there (precisely because it is my idea of hell! Haha) Any-hoodle, our new tunnel is done!!! Thank you to all the cult members I mean friends and family who laid hands on this baby. There were literally hundreds of you. We've already forgotten most of your names. #weloveyou #polytunnel #tunnelvision

one of the hundreds of (wild?) bees that were gathering in the school gardens polytunnel during the weekend, making it slightly more difficult to water than usual. the sound they produced when flying around, bouncing towards the plastic cover, was like the sound of a heavy rainfall.  #bees #polytunnel #grapes #cambridgebotanicgarden

Very over excited.....first ever melon picked tonight and it was delicious. Sweet, juicy flesh with a perfume that I last remember when eating just picked melons in France. I've had a few failed attempts the last few years with the fruit just not getting to size. I nearly didn't try this year but instead chose a cantaloupe variety called Minnesota Midget, a early, open pollinated variety suited to this climate. Bred in St. Paul's University Minnesota in 1948 to be a good short summer cantaloupe. I'm over the moon and swooning with delight. #gardeninggoals #gardeningtreasures #melons #minnesottamidget #realseeds #openpollinated #overexcited #yumyum #juicy #swoon #hopcottage #organic #chemicalfree #nodiggardening #smallholding #selfsustainableish #seedsaving #polytunnel #mygarden #huerta #kitchengarden #potager #gardening #gardenersofinstagram #permacultura #goodfood #permaculture #september18 #abundance # cantaloupes

The polytunnel ain’t looking so lush and jungle-y anymore but the tomatoes are still going strong. Did a really cut-throat prune of the tomato bed today and gave it a feed of liquid seaweed based fertiliser to help it along with the last push of the season. Lots of green tomatoes on there so I need those babies to finish growing and start ripening. All going to plan I’ll be getting tomatoes until October. . . #growyourown #thepolytunnelofdreams #polytunneljungle #polytunnel #growyourownfood #sustainablefood #sustainableliving #girlswhogarden #eatyourveggies #girlswhogrow #digforvictory #tomatoes #tomato #instadaily #shesowsseeds

Oh my god! Look what I found! Although it now looks like #timeteam have been round... I started to scrape off years worth of roots, weeds and moss from on top of a huge area of #ww2 concrete base where our #polytunnel is going to go and uncovered lots of #drainsandwalls 😃 Thankfully, where we want to put our tunnel appears to be flat driveway concrete so we can carefully measure and dig a hole for it without disturbing any interesting history... Phew!😰 #ww2base #ww2soldiersquarters #uncoveringhistory #soexcited #ilovethisplacesomuch #preservinghistory

Our Chilli of the Week is Pretty Purple, a beautiful plant with dark purple fruits, ripening to a purple orange. Slicing it open, quite a few seeds. No particular aroma. Eating the chilli without the seeds has almost no heat. Tried it with a couple of seeds and the party gets started. Almost indiscernable hint of sweet. Couldn't get that excited. SHU 4000-6000. Lots of chillies on the plant and definitely ornamental! . . #prettypurple #purple #hot #hot 🔥 #hotpeppers #hotpepperbeauty #chilli #chillis #chilliplant #habenero #jalepeno #organic #growyourown #polytunnel #smallholding #microholding #rootcauseorganics #eatrealfood #chillioftheweek #thegoodlife #goodlife

Can you guess what we were doing here? We had to pull up all of our tomato plants before they’d finished fruiting so to save the crop we took a gamble on hanging the whole plant upside down from the polytunnel rafters. And it worked! We’re still getting kilos of ripe tomatoes! Hurrah, at least one crop was saved. This is our first time growing sweetcorn and the crop has not been entirely successful. They took a while to get going, even in the propagator, and then germination rate was poor. I re-sowed some directly in their growing place in the polytunnel when the temperatures were higher. We picked a kernel a few weeks ago and it tasted good but I think it wasn't ripe enough. Today, I have picked some more because the mice have found them and we have lost quite a few kernels already! Gardening, I find, is a real lesson in perseverance, patience and letting go of perfection and control!
