I just posted a video to my story, and it is about something we ALL face as plus size people.
Being cut out by the fashion industry.. in this case, literally being cut out of a popular @forever21plus store in Portland I went to today.
I went in here today with the plan to get a cute new outfit to go out in tonight while I’m in Portland, and instead ending up feeling frustrated, hurt, and angry.
I walked in and asked the associate where the plus size section was, and she told me that they had removed it from the store & all they had was a small rack.. I asked if she could show me the rack, and there it was. Literally one tiny clothing rack with about 12 items shoved on it.
Immediately a little bit of horror washed over me, then shame, then anger. Shame that I walked into this store that’s supposed to carry cute plus size clothes, then find out I came ALL the way here for there not to be a single item I can fit in.
Anger, anger because that’s not okay! They SELL @forever21plus and market it like crazy. There’s SO MANY of us that are plus size and deserve clothes!
I wanted to know Why this happened. Why the plus size section got cut out. Why WE got completely cut out of this store. Why the doors were locked, and the lights turned out on all plus size people that wanted to shop at this location.
The manager was super kind and told me that corporate made the decision. That they got rid of other areas also like shoes. After their remodel the plus section wasn’t selling enough, so they wanted to replace it with stuff that’ll sell.
To that.. I call B.S.
The plus size section in these stores is already just one SMALL sliver of the retail space pie, and the fact that their plus section was doing so poorly they COMPLETELY removed it is heartbreaking... To me, that says we don’t want you. It says, we’re acting like we’re size inclusive.. but really we only want to be when it’s convenient.
Well guess what @forever21
We exist & We are worthy. And this needs to change..
