Great plant walk yesterday with Return to Nature // Dan de Lion. We found Chickweed, Miner’s Lettuce, Amanitas, Shepard’s Purse, Cleavers, False Turkey Tail, and lots of other great plant friends. He’ll be teaching at @wildloveapothecary a class on the Alchemy of Fermentation next Saturday 1-4. I’m sure there will be lots of great wisdom shared. Check it out if you want to start diving into plant fermentation. #herbalism #plantwalk #cleavers #planttribe

Chard harvest with my young students (ages 2.5-5 yrs.) 🐣🐥 We took a plant walk along the path to our garden bed, and learned about aloe vera (one child named Vera was thrilled to learn she shares the name with this one), dandelion (we looked at the roots and everyone said “eeewww” together, as I said some people make a tea from it ☺️), and we gave our tulsi a “haircut” (it survived a mild winter in a pot outside the classroom). We smelled freshly crushed spearmint leaves 🍃and carefully walked around wild sweet violets growing all around our little picnic tables 🌸 Everyone agreed the chard stems were pretty 🌈 and chard samples went home with all. One five year old later asked me to write down the name of the aloe plant, so he could ask his mom to get one for him 💚 #gardeningwithkids #schoolgarden #herbgardening #herbsforkids #teachyourchildrenwell #herbalism #plantwalk #wildsweetviolets #sweetviolet

Typha domingensis -Cattail. • • The seeds are dispersed by the wind, we mimicked the wind by gently shaking the plant helping in the spreading of these down like fluffy fruit. • • Cattails dwell in marshy, boggy areas, streams, riverbeds etc which is an obvious indicator of water. It’s roots have been used as survival food, but the entire plant is a plant used by the First Nations and Indigenous peoples. Cattails are found all over the world and have been used amongst the people. The First People of the Americas have used the entire plant in many ways. From food, basket making, materials for constructing walls and roofs. The plant was also used in medicine and in ceremonial rituals. • • I’ve read how Cahuilla people used the root as a poultice or powdered using as a styptic (stopping bleeding) soothing burns and healing bleeding wounds. • • I can not speak to any use of the plant aside of eating the root once with a friend who showed me how it’s been used as food @never_quite_dead • • Cattails have been found to absorb heavy metals and used in soil and water phytoremediation. There are many hyper-accumulators that help our environment like Cottonwoods, Willow, Dandelion, Sunflower, many of the Brassica’s to even mycelium (mycoremediation) have been used in bioremediation. 🍄 🍃🌳 • • The plant and fungi kingdom are the true magicians of the earth And deserve so much more respect and love! 💚🙏🏽 • • #cattails #thyphadomingensis #thyphaceae #bioremediation #hyperaccumulator #sonorandesert #every_leaf_speaks #desertflora #plantwalk #earthmedicine #mycoremediation #fungi #respectmotherearth

Glad I wore my #galoshes , indeed! The Santa Ynez #trailhead is one of my favorite #hikes in the #santamonicamountains. Full of #medicinalherbs and #wildedibles (and heaps of guardian oak, aka #poisonoak , to deter #foraging ), it's usually a dried out riverbed hugged by canyon walls. This #winter , it finally gets to actualize its true purpose, to channel precious #water. ❤🌎🌧❤ I'm so obviously giddy about this! . . . #liveyourpurpose #river #mydayinla #gooutside #plantwalk #naturelover #joy #natureismychurch #dayoff #californiawinter

Hey guys, we have some exciting news - we ( @lweatherbee and @acemada , cofounders of @livetosustain ) bought a property! It's 25 beautiful acres in a rustic mountain setting. We have big dreams of creating an eco-retreat center here, but realistically it might take some time - like years maybe. So that's all we'll say for now, but stay tuned for more details. Any guesses on what state it's located in ? ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #livetosustain #sustainableliving #ecotourism #ecoretreat #yogaeverydamnday #bossladies #zencenter #mountainretreat #ecotravel #sustainability #retreatcenter #mountainlife #outdoorwomen #dslooking #snowbunny #snowbunnies #getoutside #snowcountry #vanlifediaries #vanlife #skilife #mountainliving #borderfreetravels #andnorth #lessismore #bestofsandiego #acupuncturist #traditionalchinesemedicine #herbalmedicine #plantwalk

Goodness what a week. I haven’t got to bed before 3am since Monday - up doing college work - and I’m absolutely shattered. All completely self induced though so no sympathy! Today we had to hand in 2 assignments. We got given them both before Christmas but I didn’t look at them til the New Year as I just had so much other stuff on. Part A was to design a municipal space on a corner in Crouch End - low maintenance, seasonal interest and not too many plants - and to provide 6 over lays for height, texture and seasonal colour. Once I’d got started it was fine and I’m really pleased that finally I’ve got it all done on the computer without any photocopying. Part B was to design a border that will be displayed at a country fair in the summer. The border is big so the brief was to design a section of it which will then get replicated to fill the whole thing. It’s a competition amongst the class as Capel Manor will then bring the winning design to life at the fair. I really really enjoyed the whole process and loved coming up with and researching a concept. My downfall though was that I couldn’t get my head round how to design one section in a way that could then be replicated, so I ended up designing the whole thing which was a mega job. A really good process to go through but so intense and so time consuming. And as much as I was determined to finish it today, I still need to draw an elevation and print it all on A2. But, progress made and I had plenty to bring it to life for the ‘judges’ and I’ll hand in the final print out next week. We find out in a couple of weeks who the ‘winner’ is! For now, I cannot wait to have a glass of wine and a very early night! #capelmanor #verycold #plantwalk #doubleassignment #lotsoflatenights #nosleep #crouchend #countryfair #whowillwin #stillstufftodo #endinsight #glassofwine #earlynighttonight

Going on a plantwalk/ teaching plant identification to inner city teens. We took them from Dc to rural Maryland. In this picture I’m introducing muscadine vine. This plant is labeled invasive, so the students could harvest this plant without worrying about distressing the environment. This vine is an amazing building material to make a debris shelter in a survival situation & is a great source for clean water if you cut the vine in a slant. #knowledgeispower #plantidentification #plantwalk #empoweringyouth #herbalismisactivism

How has herbalism impacted your life? Herbalism is the foundation to everything I know about skin care health, and it's had a huge impact on my life. Here are my big-picture takeaways: Herbalism has helped me reclaim my responsibility for my own health. It's up to me to manage my health care and choose my providers wisely, with the information and education that I have. Doctors can help, but it is not their sole responsibility to fix my health. It's my body, so I'm in control. Herbalism serves as a reminder that the potential for healing is all around us. It literally is. The majority of plants that many people consider "invasive weeds" often turn out to be powerful allies in affecting our health for the better. These plants are so persistent because we need more of them in our lives! They are trying to help us, but our society is becoming more disconnected from nature very day. If we take the time to see what's really in front of us, there is so much to learn! There's endless ways for us to build relationships with the plants around us. Sometimes that means starting with herbal skin care, or drinking tea, or taking a walk in the park. Show up as you are and with an open mind and heart - the plants will be ready to meet you there and show you the way. #esperanzaherbals #herbalism #herbalallies #herbalife #herbsarefriends #foraging #nature #plantwalk #plants #startwhereyouare #plantlife #tea #relationshipbuilding #herbalproducts #herbalistsofinstagram #herbsandspices #weeds #weedsarefriends #herbalmedicine #herbaleducation #herbalremedies #holistichealth #holistichealing #wholebodywellness #reconnectwithnature #openmind #openheart #plantlove

More and more, we're realizing how vital it is to reclaim our connection to nature and learn from those who've tenaciously held onto ancestral knowledge. Our relationship to nature is innate. We can recall and remember. We all have access to her language. Conscious, direct encounters with nature are not only healing, but can develop our sense of the sacred and deeply affect our lifestyle choices. It’s more difficult to care about something if we’re detached. Experiencing interconnection and relationship creates eco-defenders and sacred warriors; so necessary at this time. 🌱 . I encourage you to connect with herbalists, outdoor guides and naturalists in your community. It's incredibly empowering to reconnect with the land where you are and learn ancestral skills. It's like lifting a veil between yourself and the magic hiding in plain sight. Most importantly, you deepen your relationship with mother earth. The @herbrally website is a great resource for finding herbalists where you are.🌿 . For those of you in NYC, Western MA or in Westchester, I have a number of opportunities for hands on learning at @loveisjuniper and @wolfconservationcenter and @sawmill_herbfarm that are now on the @sacredwarrior7 website. PlantAmnesty sponsors walks several times a year through some amazing gardens in the Seattle area. Today, Sarah Gregory (Kaleidoscope Landscaping) and Michelle Rau (PlantAmnesty) led us through the Joseph A. Witt Winter Garden at the Washington Park Arboretum. These amazingly knowledgeable CPH’s gave us a lesson in plant identification and expanded our appreciation for PNW plants. And did I mention that the winter blooming plants smelled amazing?? WILD WINTER GREENS 🌿🌿🌿🌿 Yummmm! Dont these pictures look scrumptious? Anyone know what we are looking at? While most of temperate zone areas sleep, we have a bunch of herb babies out and we get started with plant walks in February. This native medicinal generally begins to come out in Feb, peaks in march and by April....poof it dies back with the heat. Generally, we do not collect this species because it is a lesser available Native, and there are many sources for invasive varieties available. Generally, this medicinal plant is used as a nutritive tonic specifically for the urinary tract. First person to name that plant gets a spot in our upcoming online class or a plant walk this year. Thanks to @steph_herbs one of the teachers at the school for sharing her yummy find today in Central Texas. One thing that makes herbalism so unique is the complexity of our knowledge as practitioners. We not only work on peoples health concerns with herbs. We know how to find their medicines and address their specific body constitution. #wildflowerherbschool #herbs #medicinalherbs #medicinalplantsoftexas #medicinalplants #wildmedicine #centraltexas #Austin #atx #walk #plantwalk #herbalist #herbalremedy #tonic #herbtonic. #nutritive

I haven’t met an herbalist yet that doesn’t have a profound healing story about a plant. Sometimes you simply stumble across a plant and it awakens something inside of you, other times you have a dream about a plant, and most often a plant is given or offered to you in hopes of healing a specific thing, and it turns out to be much more than just healing a condition. You might wonder how you stumble across a plant ally? That question reminds me of a quote by Robin Wall Kimmerer; “..pay attention when plants come to you; they’re brining you something you need to learn.” You see plants have a very physical way of healing, they have potent phytochemicals that work in our bodies on biochemical level. But if you are open, plants will show you a whole new world of healing that extends far beyond the physical realm. If you are open to receive the healing gifts and magic of nature, your life begins in whole different direction or rather remembers something ancient that you always new. You may just start radically healing 🙏🏻🌲 . . . . . . #pine #herbalist #healing #healer #nature #herbalism #plantallies #learnfromnature #mindfulness #healingpotential #highestpotential #radicalselflove #radicalhealing #plantwalk #winter #michigan #winterhiking #sustainability #livingoffthegrid #plantlife #plantlovers #herbalmedicine

Helleborus niger, AKA Christmas rose or Hellebore, is an evergreen perennial flowering plant in the Ranunculaceae family. It is poisonous like its relatives Monkshood and Larkspar. It is also related to Goldenseal, which is well known for its strongly medicinal applications. In the Middle Ages, people used Christmas rose to protect against the power of witches, while it was also common at the time to believe that witches employed the herb in their spells, tossing the flowers into the air around to make themselves invisible. You know I love oils but did you know I also love connecting with the plants that make them! . Blending herbal infusions, cooking, making tinctures nature walks and of course making Aromatherapy blends are all methods I use. . Do you want to know my favorite way to deepen my connection to plants? Taking a walk outside with the Intention of noticing the plants growing in my environment. If you look around you will see so many medicinal plants growing just under your feet! . Try this: go out for a walk and just take note of the plants you see. Maybe some rosemary or Lavender. Perhaps Chamomile...Give thanks for their strength. When you get home pull out those essential oils and your reference book. Look up the physical, emotional, and scientific meanings of each oil. Notice how perhaps the plants are speaking to you and giving you messages of what you need to pay attention to. . Let me know what you discover. . #plantwalk #herbs #herbalism #plantlover #essentialoils #aromatherapy #rituals

For those who have been following my teaching adventures you may have noticed that 2018 was HUGE (covering over 20,000 miles of territory!)...with literally dozens of classes taking place across California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Colorado, and Utah. Big thanks to all the thoughtful/generous/enthusiastic students who showed up and helped make this past year a total success! There is absolutely no way that I could have pulled off yet another ambitious teaching tour of this magnitude without your support and encouragement...and for this I am truly grateful. Because most of my 2018 courses filled to capacity months ahead of time (FIFTY EIGHT to be exact) I've done my best to add even more class sessions for each bioregion this time around (in order to accommodate overwhelming demand). The new 2019 offerings include 56 classes spanning 11 Western U.S. states. And for the first time EVER I'll be running my popular herbal medicine making workshops in the following high demand areas: Los Angeles/San Diego, CA, Phoenix/Tucson, AZ, Portland, OR, Seattle, WA, and Salt Lake City, UT. And for those who don't know: these days many classes are filling up 6, 8, and even 10+ MONTHS in advance. Take that as a cautionary warning my friends. Carefully planning ahead and pre-registering as early as possible would be wise if you were hoping to secure a spot in any of my upcoming classes. I hope you all are enjoying this most fabulous winter season and I hope to see you at a class sometime soon! -Tellur Fenner

One chilly December morning, I nudged the hubby awake, buried in his soft, warm blanket. Him half awake, I whispered to his ear, “I want a palm.” . . Thanks to my impatient self, I dropped by this taco place near our condo, which happens to conveniently sell this areca palm. . . Problem solved. The hubby shall sleep peacefully tomorrow. . . #crazyplantlady #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantsofinstagram #indoorplants #plantaddict #plantstagram #planthoarder #urbanjungle #arecapalm

Dogwood, berries in early fall. Inedible, but very pretty. This time of year they’re nothing but bright red sticks- beautiful. #lulalinden

This Sacred plant teacher goes by the name Verbascum thapus or (Mullien) its Leaf, Root, Flower are used for medicinal purposes. Its a excellent Respiratory herb with a soothing effect the Leaf can be used in formulas with other plants to help with respiratory infections like Asthma and COPD and other respiratory imbalances and can be used to make smoke blends. The Root has been for Urinary tract infections abd bladder infections as well even for lower back when when applied topically also internally, if one is going ti hsrvest the root harvest it after the first year. If your lucky to come across this teacher when its flowering the flowers infused with other herbs can be used to help with Ear infections with its Antibacterial antimicrobial effect. Crazy to think that a single plant has so much to offer it you know what to use and how to use it 🙏 #herbalism #plantmedicine #sustainablemedicine #tinctures #salve #smokeblends #steaminhalation #motherearthalwaysprovides #apothecary #wildcrafting #plantwalk
