I hate to brag, both because it's annoying and because I don't want to jinx my streak...but I have a magical power. I can make missing chickens appear in the pitch dark of night. . I used to be very proud of this power when I was on 5 open acres. But I knew living on 230 mostly wooded acres would put my power to the ultimate test. That's needle in a haystack level stuff. Well, ladies and gentlemen, I'm officially magic. . Since the chickens started free ranging here, there have been a few nights where I had to go looking for a hen after bedtime counts. Hens that had gone broody, mostly...so I'd look where they liked to hide their eggs and voila! I didn't count that as magic. . But last night was the real deal. I had taken some of my fave birds (which I change my mind about every time I look at one of my other birds, but still) from the protection of the large barn out to sleep in their new shed near the woods' edge. . These, like many of my birds, are wilder breeds with great flight skills and the ability to escape most any fencing. But they want to stay near, so I have to rely on that if I want them to happily free range. . As soon as you put birds in a new spot and set them to free range, they go about re-establishing their hierarchy. Yesterday, the roosters spent the day working on this task, while I spent the day reminding them that I'm the top rooster and won't have it. . Last night was their first night to go back into their new shed for bedtime. But 2 roos thought differently. I saw one run into the woods. And another was just nowhere to be found. . I found the guy in the woods perched motionless in a dense tree. Ha! No match for my magic. But the other. I had no clue where to even start. In the pitch dark. With THOUSANDS of places to hide. . I looked in the woods. In the tall grass. In the brush. And I prayed for his safety. But. I FOUND him. My precious ayam cemani hybrid, with his jet black comb and plumes, and striking white streaks. . Perfectly still in brush over his head. This pic was pure joy before he fell asleep on my lap in the Polaris. I am still so happy, that I truly feel something at work here... #magicalvibes .
