The seeds of the “Tara” (T. spinosa) plant, are used to create varying shades of black or great by the indigenous Quechua women of the Andes. The roots can also be used in natural dying to produce a deep blue colour. 🙌🏼🌿 This plant is also known to have powerful antibacterial compounds and is used as a medicine for inflamed throats. 🏔🏔 The great knowledge of plants and animals in this region is absolutely astounding. 🙌🏼 First collecting and processing the seeds of this tree, then boiling in water to form a 100% wild crafted natural dye. Spending time with these amazing women and learning how they produce their was such an honor. Would you like to support these women practicing their culture and help ensure that this knowledge is passed on to younger generations? You will be able to purchase one of their beautiful handmade alpaca scarfs and other textiles online soon! Yesterday was so hectic I forgot to post some of the beautiful turnips I harvested from our permaculture garden. Best thing about these gorgeous turnips is they are container friendly and are ready to eat in around 26 days! Amazing Devil’s Claw: This is a native plant to the southwest deserts of the United States. It has food crop, practical uses, and medicinal uses. The young pods are edible as well as the mature seeds. I have tried the seeds that resemble sunflower seeds and I plan to fry up some of the young pods this year like fritters. Traditionally, the black fibers have been used in basket making that Tohono O’odham tribe artisans create. Other plants are used like grasses and yucca for alternative design colors. These baskets are amazing works of art! Last, the root can be used medicinally and contains anti inflammatory compounds. These can be found in pill form and found in health food stores. I would like to learn how to extract this from my plants safely for a proper dose level. There is always something new to learn with plants that can applied within the Permaculture lifestyle realm. — - #devilsclaw #nativefoods #nativeplants #desertplants #permaculture #permaculturelife #grownativeplants #plantphotography #plantphoto #wildedibleplants #foodforest #droughttolerantlandscape #droughttolerantplants #permacultura #urbanpermaculture

This little natural home is getting closer to being ready (the bedroom at least 😉)! This timber framed, wattle and daub, lime plastered, earthen floor, tiny home has been in the making for a while. With each natural home we build there is inevitably many ups and downs and mistakes made that lead to genius ideas to fix them. But every little step along the way has been a learning lesson, a new discovery and a sweat filled achievement. In the end it all turns out pretty darn good right?! 😊 #naturalhomes Are you interested in natural building? Do you dream of building your own home? We encourage you to do it, get your hands dirty, embark on the big adventure! There is something so gratifying about the experience. We believe everyone has the potential to learn the skills needed to do it and we are here to help. We have an amazing line up of courses for 2019, including two natural building courses. One with @bonitonito on the art of clay and lime plasters, that will also touch on different earth building methods. The other with @barrovivocr on cob oven building. Both of these will be great opportunities to delve into the natural building world whether you're a beginner or long time builder. For more info on these courses and others please check out our website, link in bio. Happy building! 🔨 #naturalbuilding

I spent the whole of last week at the @greenpopsa #edenfestivalofaction A group of beautiful like-minded people came together to do something good for mother nature! Thank you to everyone, especially #Greenpop for creating this safe space where we could talk about things without judgement and lift one another up to become better versions of ourselves! During the past week I have learned so much about myself, the importance of a community, how beautiful people are and the difference we can make in one another’s lives. I learned about the environment and how we should all work together with mother nature to create a world in which we give back just as much as we take. To create an equal balance in a sharing system, to not only sustain, but evolve with our planet. Nature is a teacher and we should learn from her. During this week I did community mural painting, attended a eco-brick workshop, vegan workshop, a yoga session, a permaculture workshop, a biomimicry workshop, removed alien vegetation, planted trees, danced on the beach during a silent disco followed by a beach clean up session, walked in the forest, laughed a lot, danced a lot, attended a speakers evening where I spoke about my mission in life, had a quiz night, watched a talent show, sat around a fire, ate delicious food, met amazing people and so much more!

Jeremiah Kidd Director, San Isidro Permaculture USA. "I am really honoured to be one of the facilitators of this upcoming Advanced Permaculture Certification Course. It will be a time to share knowledge and skills between each other and strengthen community resilience in the East African region at a time of climate extremes. Kilifi, along the Indian Ocean Coast of Kenya, is one of my favorite places on the planet. It feeds my heart and soul and there is nothing quite like enjoying a beautiful sunset over the Indian ocean after a productive day building a way of life that could save future generations. My all natural #pelacase growing amidst the chamomile here at Beech Hill permaculture and rewilding project. I AM HOT FOR PELA’S ETHICS. I love that the case is biodegradable and beautiful, but MORE than that, I love that I got to donate to a charity with my purchase, and that when my friends bought a pelacase in my name, I got to donate again! Yay! Thank you Pela @pelacase #PelaInTheWild #savethewaves

Slate Stack. These discarded roof tiles lay in a pile by Beech Hill’s barn. Surrounded by newly sprouting seeds and fresh growth, the old tiles, beautiful with their age and weather, were flat and forgotten. Vertical lines have been bouncing around my head since I got here, and these slate tiles were the perfect thing to play with and explore verticality. An echo of the young saplings all around, the tiles are arranged by size and spiral up, reaching toward the sky with newfound growth. #beechhill #permaculture #growth #playtime

Wedgetail Eagle flying overhead. These massive birds eat rabbits, possums and small prey. This year the have started eating the white cockies at Grants Picnic ground. I think hills local John Weeks photographed this earlier in the year. Sometimes there's a sign on the desk apologising for the lack of birds to feed because eagles are circling. So the tourists are missing out but the eagles are reducing their numbers. It's thought this change in prey has been brought about by the very dry start to the year, months and months with no rain here I'm the normally wet and misty hills. It's fascinating to see ecosystems evolve. #permaculture #environnement #permaculturegarden #potager #greengarden #jardinbio #potagerbio #légumes # solvivant #autonomie #ecologic   #culturebio #développementdurable #passion #nature #organicgardening #biodiveristé   #agriculture #botanique #kokopelli #permaculturelife   #respectdelanature #bienmanger #consommationraisonnée #potagerurbain   #variétésanciennes #experiencebio   #recyclage #lasagnes #buttepotagère #pucerons

#permaculture #permacultura #permaculturegarden #permaculturelife #biodiversité #ecolo #ecologie #ecologic #ecologica #greengarden #jardinurbain #potagerurbain #maraichage #jardinage #urbangardener #potagerbio #culturebio #jardinbio #legumesbio #jardincomestible #maraichagebio #solvivant #plantations #biodiversité #developpementdurable #growyourfood #growyourownfood #organicgarden #citrouille #potiron

Ive been back home now for a couple of days. So its time to post some plant info🤗 Stinging nettle is used to alleviate pain linked with joint pain, gout and arthritis. It contains nutrients like boron, calcium, silicon and magnesium that ease pain while building strong bones. Striking the inflamed joint with nettle plant draws blood to the joint, relieving pain and inflammation. In a study, 27 participants were given stinging nettle leaf and placebo leaf to apply to the painful area for 5 weeks. People who used nettle leaves reported less pain and disability than those who used placebo #wisewomantradition #permaculturelife #herbalremedies #barefootgardener #hippielife

#Repost @rishishankar . . Bug life. What a heartening feeling to sight a variety of bugs thriving. In a patch (ok, a bit larger than a patch) of land, which was brown, dry, with just a few wild bushes and a smattering of trees an year ago. Diligent and rational efforts can bring about a transformation in the soil, and consequently in the surrounding ecosystem. And the best part? The coming together of strangers as a collective to debate, question, learn, make mistakes and work towards fixing some seemingly unsurmountable problems connected with soil, ecology and farming. Working with the soil has an evolutionary and spiritual connection. And this small change does feel like a huge stride. Mushrooms are growing @kulkulfarm 🍄! Two weeks after our Mushroom Cultivation Workshop at the #kulkulpdc we have abundant shrooms growing in hand-crafted, farm grown bamboo containers! . 🍄 . So exciting to learn new skills that enable us to provide for more of our home needs. Yesterday we made herbal remedies, today our shrooms are bursting, we’re canning rosella jam, making kraut, brewing bamboo tea, building a bamboo yurt, and harvesting/processing coconut sugar. Today (like most days) a walk around the farm is an education in earth skills that the world so needs. If designing a life similar to this excites you, our last Permaculture Design Course of 2018 is coming up this September 21st! Link in bio to learn more and come join us. . Big thanks to @milkwood_nick @milkwood_permaculture for sharing your mushroom growing skills.
