We have learned how to build stonewalls to still water, dig swales to spread it and sink it in to the ground to conserve the water in the land. This so we during the next week can introduce avocado trees and other plants onto the land 🥑🌳we have learned how to measure contour lines and why that is amazingly useful to work in harmony with the earth! who knew helping to build up ecosystems and microclimates could be so fun?! We are SO on contour! #permaculture #ecosystem #microclimate #waterconservation #atitlanorganics #guatemala #lakeatitlan #permaculturedesign #harmonywithearth #oncontour

Transformation Tuesday! 7 years ago, almost exactly, I was holding a chicken. Not only that, but I was starting out in California for a 6-month architecture internship after following a gut-feeling that I needed to go there. This chicken picture (📷1) was really truly the 'before' in many ways: before I learned about permaculture and got certified, before I went down a rabbit hole of horticultural pursuits, from a cemetery to a zoo to Kentucky! 😅...before getting my own backyard flock as part of my own urban permaculture homestead! If you had told me 7 years ago "oh you'll have chickens one day" I woulda been like, "Huh, really!?" but in my gut I would've felt that, yeah, that sounds about right. There's a lot of specifics I couldn't have predicted, but ever since I held that chicken and learned those design techniques, I've been trying to work them (& many other sustainable pursuits) into the picture every chance I get. Wonder what my gut has to say about the next 7 years?!? 🤔😃

It’s a good sight...the early morning steam cloud from a freshly turned pile of compost (photo unfiltered). Making compost is one of the techniques we use for building soil. It is like a coat hanger (to paraphrase Bill M.) that you can hang in your wardrobe of Permaculture Design elements. There are any number of techniques that can be used to master a specific space or niche, and that you can hang in your design cupboard. But the techniques themselves are not the design. What else is in the cupboard? Strategy belongs in there. Strategies are the timings with which you apply techniques. Just as there are many techniques you may need, choose and use, so you can have many strategies too. The strategies enable the mastering of time within your design when applied to the techniques that you choose. But the strategies themselves are not the design. The overarching pattern with which you apply the strategies and techniques, enables your mastery over the time and space which is your design. But just as any Life system continuously evolves, so too will your design. And it must evolve, for it will never be complete. You must continually work with the evolution of life expression, shaped by your intention, as Life seeks to overcome limitations by capitalizing upon any freedom that it may have. And so we make compost to build our crop soils, and we time the collection of manure and plant matter, so that each week we make a new pile, and from a continual cycling of compost piles, we have a 5-6 week matured pile ready to go on a crop bed as well. In fact we have two from our chicken tractor composting systems, which is the pile you see being turned in this photo. Nice grapevine growing on the fence too. So you will nest different elements together in your design, and by stacking functions, you can optimize outputs for your inputs used, recycling everything not consumed back through a system. Techniques make use of the elements within a space and strategies determine the timings of fruition. It can be a little mystifying when you first try to get your head around it...but as it all comes together you wonder how we could have ever done it differently? #permaculturedesign

During an Ayahuasca retreat, guests tend to experience an emotional and psychological rollercoaster ride. Having experienced facilitators on-hand is essential for hands on guidance during the day following nighttime ceremonies. Ayahuasca activates an innate healing intelligence that brings to the surface images, memories, feelings, emotions, and experiences in order for the individual to work through trauma, imbalance, and dysfunction. Shadow material will emerge from the deep subconscious/unconscious and knowing how to face it is one of the keys to healing and lasting transformation. Skilled facilitators are able to gently encourage guests to not shrink from difficult experiences but to face, witness, and explore them. They help guests to understand how to work with difficult emotions, how to reclaim their projections, and how to surrender to the process. Based on their own experience of the healing journey, facilitators pass on their knowledge of the importance of letting go of expectations and dropping the need to analyze the healing process, as well as how to work through mental confusion. To learn more about our facilitators and what they do, click the link in our BIO.

There is something about eating foods straight from the garden. There is more energy there, more nutrients, more vibrancy, more life force. Serious, we can talk about chi authentically when we talk about eating foods that we grow on good healthy soils, with clean air and water. Growing a food forest is about producing both perennials and annuals. Situate those annuals closer to the home, for easier access, more frequent access, and more detailed care while they grow. The perennials should be stationed further out from the home center. Picture your home as the center of a mandala....the most high maintenance and quick growing and quick-to-harvest plants are just outside of the house. As you go out further, the plants ought to be more of those which take longer to come to fruition. The most far away plants are the fruit trees and shrubs, berries brambles, the things that you harvest once a year. Ok. Enough of the Permaculture design lesson. Here we have a stir fry of butternut squash, striped toga aubergines, purple stemmed Choy sum, onions and garlic. A vegetarian and vegan dish indeed, with plenty of flavor to keep you interested and satiated. #permaculture #permaculturedesign #organic #eatlocal #harvestfoods #handmadefood #farmtotable #euroasianfusioncuisine #asianatlantis #veganfood #vegetarianfood #healthyeating #mindfuleating #colorful #eattherainbow #colorishealthy #foodism #foodislove #foodislife #foodstagram #instadaily #farmchef

When establishing @lawsonsmarketgarden I was inspired by some existing farming models. Some of these guys work 8-10 months of the year, working hard whilst the days are long and taking the winter off to rest and reset. . I set an intention at the beginning of this project to replicate this. The last time I left the UK was back in 2012. Never really earning enough money to live luxuriously taking holidays abroad, and I became quite comfortable in that mindset. . However, last month as the growing season began to draw to a close, I was invited to Ireland to a friend's Air BnB; which was incredible. I'm currently enjoying the stunning landscapes and wildernesses of France on a friends 25acre small holding. These invitations have been warmly welcomed and I'm reminded of that intention I set not so long ago... . I believe very strongly that our thoughts manifest themselves into our reality. Just like the intention I set when my son was born, dreams of becoming self sufficient, working the land and being nourished by it. These goals are still growing and evolving as we speak. . Some thoughts materialise quickly, others over days, weeks, months or years... Some a little longer... Some may even take lifetimes... I guess I'm trying to share the fact that we are powerful creators of our circumstances, we hold the building blocks that eventually shape our experiences here on Earth. . Perhaps it's all just a biased perception formed from a positive outlook... But im pretty certain I decided to have one of those too... It's all too easy to allow the pressures of society to control our thought processes and keep us dumbed down in a low vibratory state. . If we can drop the distractions, and focus on the good we want to bring into the world, eventually, perhaps when we least expect it; we'll whitness it blossom. . . . #manifest #perception #confirmation #intention #create #reality #outlook #lawofattraction #createspace #permaculturedesign #love #light #landscape #wilderness #foray

"Animals consume plants and, quite simply, transform plant tissue into more complex matter. Simple plant protein is converted into more complex animal protein. Animals void food that they cannot directly absorb, and this falls on to the earth making instantly available food, which is taken up again by the plants. Plants feed animals and animals feed plants. This is the basic cycle of nature, without which life on this planet would cease to exist. These are the things that matter". • • • • • #johnseymour #organic #garden #growyourown #sustainable #gardening #sustainability #organicgardening #urbangarden #nature #homegrown #homesteading #organicgarden #growyourownfood #gardens #gardenofexistence #permaculturedesign #foodforest #urbanpermaculture #growsomethinggreen #urbangardening #harvest #growfoodnotlawns #urbanfarming #flowers #urbanfarm #nopesticides #urbangardenersrepublic

Loving all the puha at the moment. Yes you can eat it as a green, my interest is more in it's usefulness as chookfood however I'm pretty sure it's nutritional qualities would be off the scale. Classed as an unruly unattractive weed of sorts, you'll find this beauty cropping up everywhere in the cracks of concrete. It is one of natures many gifts attracting bees, hoverflies and all manner of beneficial insects. I love it and can't get enough of it's robustness and persistance to grow wherever it pleases. I think we can take alot from the hidden messages of plants. 🌱 . . . . . . . . . #naturesgifts #organicgardening #naturalpestanddiseasecontrol #nurtureearth #sustainablelifestyle #permaculturedesign #chookfood #supernutrients #nutrientdense #dontspraytheweeds #weedsrule #glyphosatefreezone

Stink bug season is upon us! Catch them 'n squish 'em while they are young like this. Its a lot easier and less cringy than dealing with those full grown green adults. These little guys don't move so fast. You can mostly find them on any plant going to seed, dandelions, calendulas...they seem to love the seed heads?! And they look a little like what you might expect a baby ladybug to look like 🐞 but don't be fooled. These guys were destined to suck the life out of my tomato plants 😈 . . . . . . . . . . #naturalpestanddiseasecontrol #workwithnature #stinkbugs #sheildbugs #squashbugs #nurtureearth #sustainableliving #organicgardens #backyardgardens #gardensofinstagram #dandelions #spotthespider #permaculturegardens #permaculturedesign #permaculturenz #bugsofinstagram

. . . . . . #permacultureindia #permaculturedesign #compostsystems #hotcompost

Being a traveller means I get a chance to explore places and see how they create their food crops. I was fascinated by the rice fields because they are essentially terraces with cleverly designed water holding abilities. In permaculture I have learnt how these work and how to develop them. Unfortunately I don’t eat rice but still enjoy seeing the work that goes into creating these natural structures! #bali #permaculture #gardening #gardeninglife #farm #farmer #instatravel #travel #traveller #ricefields #terraces #permaculturedesign #workwithnature #instagood #ubud #indonesia #horticulture #food #foodcrops

Does your farm have silvopasture?⠀ ⠀ Silvopasture is the mix of both pasture and forrest. The idea behind silvopasture is to provide both food and shelter to livestock, while increasing the accessibility of forage from a diverse habitat of both trees and plants.⠀ ⠀ Other benefits include, ⠀ ⠀ - Diversification of income⠀ - Greater plant nutrient uptake⠀ - Improved forest areas⠀ - More mast (fruit, seeds, etc.) crops for wildlife⠀ - Improved aesthetics⠀ - Livestock summer heat protection⠀ ⠀ // Greg Judy, silvopasture keynote via Savanna Institute

TO be on top of your game as a mission-driven, visionary entrepreneur, you gotta take care of YOU, and that means your HEALTH. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You with me?😆 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You number one priority being a conscious leader needs to be taking care of your body, your mind, your brain, your hormones and your soul, so you can show up powerfully day in, day out for your mission💫💥 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When you feel light and in love with yourself, connected to what truly matters...you feel energized and present, and that is when you create the MAGIC in your business. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When you take control of your mental and emotional state and choose to live in a beautiful, high-vibe state, you are saying YES to living your highest self and in doing so, you change the world💫 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So here are 5 strategies to keep your health and performance high (I implement these too😉): ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Have a morning routine to light your energy, focus and clarity up and set yourself up for success for the day✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. Intermittent Fasting - give your body a break from constantly being in the fed state and and allow it to enter the fasted state and work its POWER💥 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. Enjoy the process of making your food - it is your nourishment after all. Just like anything you create in your biz or life that becomes meaningful, each meal is a creation. A process of sourcing the highest quality of ingredients🌿🌿🌿, preparing it with love and eating mindfully. This is the easiest self-care💚 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4. Connect with nature daily - get outside and feed your soul with the inspiration, teachings and fresh air of the forest or ocean🌳🌊 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 5. Get your heart rate up with HIIT or WOD 🏋️‍♀️workouts for strength and stamina, yoga🧘🏽‍♀️🤸🏽‍♂️ (I love it hot and acro ;) for opening up the body and flow, and aerobic/endurance training for ⬆️resilience🏊🏼‍♂️🚴🏼‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tune into you, free yourself and schedule time for your higher self to evolve💫 Let me know if you have questions! The pattern is the big picture that governs your whole design. Just like you pick a theme for your Instagram profile or a theme for a birthday party, you pick a pattern for your planned garden project. So this winter, as we plan our gardens, let's look at naturally occurring patterns such as spirals and waves and circles and many more. Let's use nature's templates as the backdrop to our garden designs and see whether these might bring a more unified, holistic approach to the garden details such as plant selection and color-scheme. #permaculturedesign #growyourownfood #organicgardening #urbanorganicgardening #organicfood #edibleschoolyard #gardeningtips #urbanorganicgardener #nonGMO #growveggies #growfoodnotlawns #gardeningwithkids #urbangardening #vegetablegarden #vegetables #veggiepatch #healthyeating #raw #plantbased #superfood #permaculture #gardendesign
