PEACE & LOVE!!! So the RICE protocol of Raise, Ice, Compress and Elevate have been around for decades now and they have been very beneficial. Below is a different protocol method to deal with injuries as well which has a different outlook on some of the older ideas held with dealing with acute or chronic injuries/pain. These new protocols could replace the older RICE protocols as we now understand in greater detail what occurs in the early stages of healing and how it can effect later stages of healing.
PEACE, Protection (making sure to avoid exercises and activities that cause pain), Elevation (keeping the injured body part above the heart to help with blood flow), Avoid anti-inflammatories (in comparison to typical actions, it may be more beneficial to stay away from anti-inflammatory medication as it may slow the initial healing phase), Compression (using taping or dressing apply pressure to the problem area to help prevent clot formation and blood flow), Education (educating the individual to have as much active rehab in initial stages). LOVE, Load (something im a major fan of is load a problem area as soon as a person is able with a load that does not produce pain and can be managed appropriately), Optimism (often overlooked is optimism regarding the injury and rehab, having a positive outlook or an understanding of the benefit the different aspects to rehab they are undertaking), Vascularisation (including cardio based activity to maintain a better heart rate can help with the initial stages of healing), Exercise (working around the injury to allow the patient to still exercise in a way they are use to or in a way that will benefit them). As the PEACE & LOVE protocols are introduced as the new norms it shows a change in our views to treatment of acute and chronic injuries as well as a change of pace where more importance is placed on patient control and activity levels in rehab.
