International Day Against Drug Abuse.
Simple things that you can do to help 🙂
The very first thing to remember is that that the word ‘drugs’ does not always implies scary sounding substances (Cocaine, heroin, LSD). Every medication is a drug. From the aunty who swallows paracetamol for every tiny little pain to the uncle who chews on paan-masala to ‘relive stress’, everyone is abusing drugs.
Second, try to understand.
It is easy for us to blame the person. Most people with a substance use problem are shunned or looked down upon.
Try to ease their guilt. The problem is biological and genetic too. Once your body is naturally inclined towards wanting more drugs, it will keep craving it. It’s not just the person and his/her ‘weak will’. Third, gently nudge the person. Keep nudging even if you fail initially.
Nudge them towards taking treatment and approaching a mental health practitioner or a physician. Get professional help. Know when things are out of your (or his/her) hands.
Failures are common. But each failure must be acknowledged and evaluated. Then, efforts must start anew.
Lastly, respect a person’s ‘no’. In common situations around you, listen to that person shying away. Do not push a friend to ‘have a peg’ or ‘just a puff’. You never know how helpful your support may be to him/her. - Dr. Akshay
