Prague Astronomical Clock
Prague, Czech Republic 🇨🇿
[Reading in 45 seconds]
The Prague Astronomical Clock (Orloj in Czech) is a very famous and well conserved medieval sophisticated clock located in the Old Town Square.
The clock was mounted on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall in 1410, making it the oldest astronomical clock still operating.
The ‘Orloj’ is made of three main components: the astronomical dial (representing the position of the Sun and Moon in the sky), "The Walk of the Apostles" (a clockwork hourly show of figures of the Apostles) and other moving sculptures striking the time and the last is a calendar dial with medallions representing the months.
According to a sad legend, the creator of Prague’s Astronomical Clock Tower, Hanus Carolinum, was blinded by the Old Town councillors with a hot poker. They did this out of fear that Hanus would recreate the clock in another city and make this one less famous and unique.
However this legend was true, they failed! Even if Prague’s Astronomical Clock Tower will always be the original one, an extra replica can be seen in the Hongdae district of Seoul in South Korea.
