🔸Inspired by my profession in working with clients suffering from neurological disorders, as well as my investment in health and nutrition, this page will be centred around how we can manipulate our gut microbiome in order to optimise our physical and mental health. . 🔹There are over 100 million neutrons in the gut - as many as you would find in the brain of a cat. Approximately 1 - 2kgs of microbes live in your gut and make up your unique ‘microbiome’. Microbes are responsible for breaking down the fibre in your diet and they produce critical nutrients that feeds the cells lining your gut. Until recently, microbes were impossible to study, and it has only been in the past 5 - 10 years that there have been major findings demonstrating the role they play in regulating body weight, hormones, emotions, behaviour and our susceptibility to disease.
. 🔸Many investigations have been conducted on mice, making it difficult to be 100% certain of the transferability of these studies to humans. The American Gut Project, however, has validated these hypothesis in the world’s largest micro biome citizen science study to date. .
To summarise in the most digestible way........
. • The greater the diversity of plants in the diet, the greater the diversity of microbes in the gut, enabling increased ease in the breakdown and digestion of foods. Microbes help regulate body weight. They can decide how much energy your body extracts from food; they control hunger signals; they help decide which foods your crave and they determine how much your blood sugar spikes in response to a meal. .
• Our gut micro biome influences our susceptibility to diseases such as obesity, liver disease, heart disease, depression, anxiety and some neurological disorders. .
• Studies of the ‘gut-brain axis’have risen from 100 or so to 1000’s in the past 20 years. Judging by this figure, it goes without saying that our ‘gut-brain’ knowledge is only just beginning. .
