Hus the band and I had a spontaneous late lunch afternoon tea date at Pearl Novato which just had its soft opening yesterday. It was night and day compared with a year ago when the short lived Boba Nosh moved in. They had attempted healthy bubble tea which cost more and tasted less. Pearl sticks to the original Asian street food model and succeeds! We started with our poke bowls - $13.50 for regular (2 proteins). We both went with jasmine rice. I chose tuna and bbq beef with avocado, furikake, sesame seeds, scallions, pickled veggies, and spicy mayo. My husband had tuna, bbq pork, jalapenos, furikake, scallions, and teriyaki sauce. The fish tasted fresh, the meats were delicious (first place I've seen that offers meat as well as fish), and all the accoutrements were yummy. The portion size was average (same as Pokeritto, but more than Aloh-o). After our healthy, savory entrees, we were ready for a sugary treat. Things got a little bumpy in the communication dept. because it turned out that our order taker forgot that they had popping passionfruit boba, so when I asked for jasmine green milk tea w/lychee jellies and popping passionfruit boba, he thought I meant mixing milk tea w/passionfruit tea, and he said they couldn't do that because it would be weird. So I ended up agreeing to have passionfruit tea because he didn't realize his misunderstanding until later...but it still tasted great, and he graciously added milk to it after I tasted it and wanted that (as there was a lightly bitter aftertaste to the tea). My husband had strawberry milk tea with regular boba and passionfruit popping boba. It was sweet and tasty. We both got the regular size for $4.50. The owner and the guy who served us were both courteous and friendly. He went on to talk with us about the business while we drank our tea. He explained how complicated it was, with ordering various components/toppings from different vendors, and having to commute/transport everything from Benecia where they are from, and where the original shop is. I will definitely return - when our kids spotted our empty cups in the car, our son was miffed he didn't get to try those delightful drinks.
