One of my biggest achievements of this year - I made myself some shoes!
This was the most challenging skill I've tried teaching myself so far, I really did think it might be impossible, and I almost gave up so many times, but I kept plugging away and then suddenly, there they were. I'll post separately about the process of making them - it took well over a year, and there's still improvements I'm working on!
Most importantly though, I love them as shoes! My old pair were inexpensive, but decently made, and I'll be keeping them as the thicker soles can be really useful on some surfaces, but they really don't fit me well, so I was constantly worrying about falling over. These fit really well, so I don't have to deal with that anxiety anymore, and they're super comfy, especially with my ridiculously thick socks inside. They also looks a lot better with the rest of my clothes - I'm not sure anyone wearing decent clothes would have worn shoes that didn't fit.
They're loosely based on ones from Viking Age Hedeby, but I didn't copy the evidence super closely - my main goal was just to have something that didn't fall apart! But I can always try improving on the pattern in the future now I have more experience (and I'm already planning an earlier Iron Age pair on a pattern I've been wanting to try for ages! 😀) #leather #leatherwork #leatherworking #vegtan #shoes #shoemaker #shoemaking #selftaught #keeptrying #viking #vikingreenactment #reenactment #ironage #ancientcraft #traditionalcrafts #traditionalskills #dontgiveup #keeplearning #newskills #newbie #achievementunlocked
