Enhancing Longevity Part 1 Anti-ageing is big business with biohacks ranging from photobiomodulation to stem cell injections & supplementation. Whilst these therapies are exciting, without the basic behavioural & lifestyle characteristics in place, buying into them is a waste of time. Before considering these therapies, first look at those characteristics that members of the blue zones - with their high rate of centenarians - share. If you want simple changes that’ll give you the basis for a long, fulfilled & healthy life, here’s part 1 of my list: 1. Eat wild plants. Whilst most centenarians aren’t vegetarians or vegans, they tend to follow a predominantly plant-based diet. Wild plants possess a natural in-built defence mechanism that exposes the body to a mild amount of stress known as xeno-hormetic stress. This allows your body to mount & build its own internal antioxidant defence system. Wild plants also contain trace elements such as antioxidants, anthocyanidins & resveratrol, all of which confer endless health benefits. 2. Avoid processed & packaged foods. These two groups of ingredients trigger glycaemic variability & inflammation, both of which have been proven to shorten the lifespan. 3. Consume lentils & legumes. If you look at all the blue zones, lentils or legumes (e.g. black beans, lentils, chickpeas) are included as part of their diets. But there are also some easy tips and tricks to support your gut that you can do at home! ✨ 1. Address your stress! Stress plays a major role in leaky gut. Incorporate breath work, yoga, nature, meditation and fun into your day! ✨ 2. Reducing gut inflammation - incorporate turmeric, aloe vera, chamomile, peppermint as drinks or into cooking. ✨ 3. 👉We all have that one friend who says alcohol makes them sleep better. Does it for you? Let’s take a look at some observational studies:⁣ ⁣ ⁣ 📚SLEEP QUALITY:⁣ Alcohol consumption affects sleep quality in various ways. A number of studies have shown that drinking momentarily increases sleepiness, but later causes frequent nighttime and early morning awakenings (Park et al., 2015). Individuals with alcohol use disorders frequently consume alcohol before sleep in an effort to improve their sleep, although this is not advantageous. ⁣ ⁣ 📚 REM + DEEP SLEEP IMPAIRMENT:⁣ In a laboratory study in which healthy individuals were instructed to drink alcohol and then undergo polysomnography (The gold standard in terms of measuring sleep), it was shown that rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was suppressed during the first half of the sleep cycle followed by an increase during the second half of the sleep cycle. It could induce deep sleep at the beginning of the sleep cycle, but if sleep continues for a longer duration, overall sleep quality deteriorates due to the decreased amount of slow wave sleep and REM sleep rebound. This is in agreement with findings that, among men, drinking decreased overall sleep duration and increased sleep disturbances (Park et al., 2015).⁣ ⁣ ⁣ 📚BREATHING QUALITY:⁣ It has also been suggested that alcohol relaxes the upper airway muscles, increasing resistance during inhalation, which directly and significantly impedes breathing. This also worsens sleep apnoea (Roth et al., 1985).⁣ ⁣ 💥TAKEAWAY:⁣ Alcohol is not useful for sleep. It may temporarily help you fall asleep, but with the disruptions in sleep architecture, elevated body temperature and impaired breathing, it’s not a great idea.  What do you think? •Hemp+Choc Banana Bread 🍌 . Gluten free and can be made vegan 🌿 . >Ingredients: -5 ripe bananas (4 for the base, 1 for decoration)
-1/2 cup hemp flour (I used @hempfoodsaustralia ) -1 and 1/2 cup almond meal
-1/4 cup raw honey (or coconut nectar or maple syrup)
-2 eggs (or replace with flax-egg)
-1 tsp vanilla extract
-1 tsp cinnamon powder
-1 tsp baking powder
-1/4 cup coconut oil (melted)
-1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (i used 85%) . >Instructions: 1- Preheat oven to 175C. 2- In a large bowl, peel and mash 4x bananas until smooth and whisk in eggs (or flax-eggs), coconut oil, honey (or other sweetener) and vanilla until combined. 3- Add the flours, baking powder and cinnamon. Mix until well combined. 4- Add chocolate chips 5- Pour the mixture into oven-proof tin or silicon mold. Smooth the top with a spatula and place 1x banana cut in half. 6- Bake for 60-70 min or until golden brown and a knife comes out of the center clean. . > ENJOY 😊

'Just relax' That oft-given bit of advice dished out with regard to conception. Here's the thing though, just relax results in a definitely does not relax in any way, shape or form situation. As an alternative thing to say, how about nothing...just be quiet and listen. Unless specifically requested, you don't need to offer advice 😊 So, in saying that... Understanding stress and the physiological (how it affects the body) effects it has and how that could be contributing to fertility issues, then being given information and options to help support the stress response system (SRS) can be most useful. Just finished my work day (about 10 hours today!) but wanted to pop in and say that the overall theme today with my clients were: 1. Hormonal imbalances 2. Thyroid issues 3. Compromised digestive health 😨 These 3 “symptoms” would probably make up 95% of my practice! It’s a staggering guesstimated statistic that is frightening! Why are women specifically between 25-45 presenting with these issues? Almost everyone I know, including myself before, has dealt with them. 😕 It’s due to what’s in and on our food. What’s in the air and on our dirt. And what we put in and on our bodies. If we work on these three areas, we often fix the root issue that causes these symptoms to present in the first place! That’s encouraging! All of that to say, you are never ever a SLAVE to your symptoms, your genetics OR your diagnosis. Don’t take possession of it. You are a victor that has the tools and information at your fingertips to heal, really heal from the ROOT on a cellular level. Your body was literally DESIGNED to heal and thrive! Let it! So I’ve had lots of questions and interest in doing a juice cleanse, and I thought I would clarify what it is exactly 🤷🏽‍♀️My first juice cleanse was in October last year, so I was a newbie to this whole concept. I had done fasting and cleansing before, but never juicing 🍹 Fasting and cleansing are powerful healing tools. I have done a 4 day fast before, where I only drank water, and this was challenging and empowering at the same time 💧I needed to take life very easily during this fast and sleep a lot. My first juice fast was 30 days, because I had a health issue that I needed to take action on and I was amazed at how much energy I had and how fully functional I was while on this cleanse 🤸🏽‍♂️ Juice fasting allows us to cleanse while still supplying us with loads of nutrients to fully function while healing our bodies. In fact, it is a much kinder way to cleanse, because the truck loads of nutrients make the process of detoxification much smoother 👍🏽 Yes there were times during my 30 days where I felt tired, hungry and challenged, but a lot of the time I felt clarity, energy and abundant health 🤗 Juice cleansing involves drinking freshly made juices which are made up of 60+% vegetables (lots of greens) and 40% or less fruit. My cleanse is not restrictive, so you can drink as much juice as you require, provided it is mostly vegetables 🥒🥬🥕I made between 2.5-3.5 litres a day. You can also drink water, herbal teas (caffeine free) and coconut water. That’s all. And just to be clear, you will need a juicer –not a blender –to make your fresh juices 👌 If this is your first time doing a cleanse, I recommend starting with 7 days to give your body a wonderful reset. It is also not recommended to jump straight into a cleanse, it is best to adjust your diet and habits the week leading up to a cleanse by reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, 🍻 eating less meat and sugar and increasing your intake of whole foods 🥑🥦🌽 If you have any more questions, please feel free to message me. In this hot Sydney weather its easy to get dehydrated. It is important to have at least 2L per day, more if you're working out, have an active job or are sweating a lot. If you're sweating a lot you may be losing electrolytes so it is important to replenish them with a sugar free electrolyte drink such as hydralite or make your own by adding a squeeze of lemon juice and a pinch of salt to your water bottle. Magnesium supplements can also help recover lost electrolytes. Water drinking tips; - there are several phone apps that can remind you, I like 'plant nanny water reminder app' (every time you drink it waters your plant and if you dont log your water intake the plant dies). - keep a water bottle with you and refill it whenever its empty. - every time you get up from your desk at work have a sip of water. Same goes for your pets! Keep them drinking plenty of fresh water and if its a very hot day add a few ice cubes to their water. Why is gut health so important? And why should we care? Your G.I. system is responsible for immunity, digestion, and the synthesis and transport of essential nutrients that your organs need. Increasing evidence is now showing us the importance that our microbiome has on our overall health, and surprisingly enough, even our mental and emotional health. Bidirectional communication exists between your central nervous system and gut microbiota. Various disorders associated with this fragile system are further associated with the dysregulation of the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis, which controls the body’s response to stress. Dysbiosis and inflammation in our gut can result from a diet that consists of highly processed foods, high-glycemic/sugary foods, fried foods, excess meat & dairy consumption, and excess alcohol and is associated with and shows causation of mental illnesses that are prevalent in our society today, such as anxiety and depression (when researchers once believed it was the other way around). The overall state of your gut health plays a major role in so many bodily processes and is subject to being compromised with the standard American diet and environmental toxins. Aside from your emotional health, dysbiosis in your G.I. can manifest physically in the form of skin irritation, upset stomach, or autoimmune disorders. One sure way to rebuild the health of your gut is to cut out the foods mentioned earlier, consume more high-fiber foods (leafy greens, cruciferous veggies, fruits, legumes) and supplement with probiotics and/or l-glutamine.
