The 1968 Cannes Film Festival began 51 years ago today. Roman Polanski was on the jury so of course, Sharon Tate came with. There was an increasingly aggressive unrest in France at this time and student protests more or less took over the festival which caused major disruption for those in attendance, particularly the higher-ups. Due to the unavoidable turmoil, the event ended up being curtailed a few days in and both Sharon and Roman left for Rome to get away from the protests and have a week of unscheduled fun with friends.
However, the sour ending to their time in Cannes does not mean Sharon and Roman didn't attend the film festival at all. They did, and in great fashion. One of my personal favorite outfits worn by Sharon to the festival was on display last October at the Museum of Style Icons in Kildare, Ireland. I attended the exhibit just days before it ended and was lucky enough to see this dress in person. A few weeks later, It was sold in Los Angeles by Julien’s Auctions for over $15,000.
