We are returning from our summer hiatus this fall to read debut novel, There There, by Indigenous author Tommy Orange! “Tommy Orange’s first novel is a wondrous and shattering portrait of an America few of us have ever seen. He writes of the urban Native American, the Native American in the city, in a stunning novel that grapples with a complex and painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and profound spirituality, and with a plague of addiction, abuse, and suicide. There There is a relentlessly paced multigenerational story that tells the story of twelve characters.” — goodreads ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo credit: @gobooksgo ✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #booksandshit #blackbooks #bookclub #blackauthors #blackauthorsmatter #bookstagram #bookbuzz #bookworm #bookshelf #bookish #blackgirlsread #wellreadblackgirl #noirreads #bookshelf #currentlyreading #bookworm #booklover #library #goodreads #diversereads #diversestacks #diversespines #treatyourshelf #tommyorange #therethere #nativeauthors #nativestories #nativeamericanauthors

For us, sustainability starts in our kitchen and luckily, our people fully buy into this concept. Headed by Kanakadri (seated) and flanked by Dilip, Rahul and Arjun (L-R), the core kitchen team you see here have gone above and beyond to ensure that we up the restaurant’s sustainability quotient. From getting vendors to switch from delivering materials in plastic containers to ensuring that the produce we use is organic to composting all the kitchen waste, they’ve surged ahead with their own ideas of how to make our space a little greener. And while doing so, they’ve realised how much of this can be practiced in their own homes. That is, after all, the Go Native way. . This conversation is part of a series that explores how Go Native inspires change, big and small, in the lives of people. . #nativestories #peopleofgonative #bethechange #community #sustainability #gonative #livenative

Memory Rez Lane: It’s the last day of 2019 Crow Fair today. So, I figured I share some pictures I found yesterday. Both my Mom and I rode in the 1974 Crow Fair Parade. It was my first parade and also my first time riding a horse with my Mom. In the picture we look soo stoic lol. In 1993, 19 years later, I returned to ride in the 1993 Crow Fair Parade as the 1993-1994 Miss Seminole Princess. I didn’t ride on horseback in the Parade, but it was still a cool moment. Later that day, after my Princess duties was done, I was able to change into a Crow Fair Pow Wow t-shirt, some jean shorts, and white Keds.(Remember those lol.😹) I was able to ride horseback after all! I made a new friend the first day I was there. It was probably because I talked a lot and told corny jokes, but either way my friend invited me to go riding. I rode bareback for the rest of the day that day on my friend’s horse. Riding along side my friend was something else. We went to visit her family’s encampment. Imagine riding past teepees with kids running around and Pow Wow music in the air. It was awesome!!!🐴 After riding and visiting, we ended up at a river to water the horses. Sitting on top of my horse for the day, I just took in everything I was experiencing. Watching the kids splashing in the river, feeling the sun drying me after getting wet from a water fight(I was collateral damage lol.), and hearing the sounds of laughter and beating drums filling the air, it was a good day.🙏🏼 Hope you enjoyed reading about one of my favorite memories while I was Princess. I was fortunate enough to have met so many great people during my reign. All the Tribal Royalty I met were the best part of my year. I enjoyed making new friends with them, and keeping them. This was a memory worth remembering.💖🙏🏼☺️ #blessed #memories #crowfair #crowfairparade #nativeamerican #nativeamericanstyle #nativestories #instagram #appreciation #positivethoughts #positivevibes #goodmemories #goodtimes

🐺WOLVES 🐺 ————————— Once upon a time, there was a grandfather who told his grandson, “Grandson, there are two wolves inside of me. It’s hard to describe the experience of reading this book. In his stilted, yet fluid prose, Tommy Orange illustrates an Oakland that most have never seen. Each of the chapters were narrated by a different character and were like threads, weaving together a story of identity, family, and place. I loved how the seemingly unconnected narratives meld into one, climaxing at the end of the novel and leaving you to deal with the remains of what happened when these characters collide. 🧡 There were many quotes that I loved, but I leave you with my favorite quote taken from the page 10: 🧡 “We are the memories we don’t remember, which live in us, which we feel, which make us sing and dance and pray the way we do, feelings from memories that flare and bloom unexpectedly in our lives like blood through a blanket from a wound made by a bullet fired by a man shooting us in the back for our hair, for our heads, for a bounty, or just to get rid of us.” If you haven’t yet, I recommend reading this one. 🧡 #bookreview #bookreviewer #books #bookstagram #alwaysreading #currentlyreading #diversespines #nativeauthors #nativestories

Susanna and Thillana are a part of our core team. Susanna ensures the smooth running of all day to day operations at Go Native while Thillana works on the visual merchandising across all stores. They hit it off instantly, which is lucky, as a lot of the work that they do overlaps! . From when Susanna can remember, her parents have always been very conscious about how they used the resources they have. They never brought home shopping bags from stores and purchased groceries from local markets. Susanna says, “I was always taught to love the environment - not to waste water or energy. It’s something I have grown up with. Today what I do is an extension, but stronger in intent because of the climate crisis.” . Thillana’s family is from Kannur and are very particular that they work towards an overall sustainable culture – they have a small farm and have started a way of recycling waste water. Thillana says, “While my parents were able to live consciously in smaller town like Kannur, I wasn’t sure how practical it is to lead a sustainable life in a big city.  When I joined Go Native, I saw that making conscious choices is easier than I thought and I’ve started to avoid plastic or anything that has a negative impact on the environment.” . Love these ‘hard’ faces! . I read a book recently called There, There about Natives and it’s made me super curious to learn more about this culture. I feel like we always hear the same story and I found myself just as curious as the characters in the book to uncover more about their past traditions and beliefs. . Today we visited a Native center set beautifully on a lake. It was a fun and much needed stop. Lakshmi and Sukanya, our version of the Bobbsey twins, don’t just look alike - they think alike too. At the store Lakshmi handles the floor while Sukanya works in finance, but they’re otherwise normally seen in each other’s company and it was no surprise when they also decided to work together as one of our suppliers. If you love the silver jewellery at the store, they’re the ones who source most of it for us. . They say that one of the reasons that they’re the best of friends is because their backgrounds and families are so similar. Sukanya’s family would plant trees, both in their garden and the locality, to ensure that the green cover in their area wasn’t compromised. For Lakshmi’s family, finding environmentally options like neem twigs instead of toothbrushes were a priority. . While being sustainability focused was intrinsic to them, working with Go Native has exposed them to new ways in which they can be more conscious about their enviromental impact. They now ensure that they’re as plastic-free as possible and scrutinize the products that they use in their homes and on themselves. They also hope to work on a line of eco-friendly products in the near future. . Shashi and Jayraj, the stalwarts of Go Native, are two very important members of our team today. Between then, they handle the most crucial aspects of our restaurant in HSR Layout - the service team and the kitchen - and make standing on their feet for hours on end look like a breeze. . Shashi was always interested in implementing eco-friendly practices at home. He attended a composting workshop way back in 2004 and has a small organic farm in his backyard. Go Native's philosophy fits in well with his way of life and he now tries to follow the other examples set by our space like being plastic-free and reducing waste. . Jayraj confesses that he didn't know too much about cooking with organic ingredients when he joined Go Native two years ago. When asked if working here has changed the way he thinks, he replies with his quiet smile that after seeing the benefits of going organic first-hand, he now ensures that the food made at home for his family is cooked with pesticide-free, natural produce. . Shilo George ( @shilogeorge ) is a fat, queer, Southern Cheyenne-Arapaho advocate, speaker, and consultant AND our guest on the newest release of The Appetite (link in our bio!). In her conversation with Opal Co-Founder Julie Church and host Carter Umhau, Shilo offers an intersectional lens into the experience of fatness and the ways in which she sees the eating disorder treatment community severely lacking in diverse representation and ways of talking about the story of the body. Make sure you listen to this one, because Shilo also shares her incredibly moving story of recovery through trauma and an eating disorder and the beautiful ways in which her ancestors have guided her through. Chyenne Factor (Seminole) is an outfielder for the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. Recently I got to travel with the Seminole Nation Communications Dept and shoot a video about her story and highlights from the College World Series. She also took time to show Seminole youth, Siena Deatherage, the facilities and give out some great advice. Thanks to @jeremyfultz (audio and 2nd cam) @delrpen and Bo Whitekiller for bringing me on board this awesome project. We still have some more footage to get but here's a few clips from day 1. #nativeathletes #seminole #osu #nativestories

We wouldn’t know what we’d do without Uma and Rajesh. They keep our retail stores running seamlessly and are often the first people you meet when you walk into the store. . When they joined Go Native, the two of them thought it was going to be just another retail store. But they admit this space has changed the way they look at waste. Following a workshop on composting, Uma began her journey of managing wet waste from her kitchen— tentatively at first, and confidently now. Rajesh carries a reusable bag everywhere he goes and he’s made it his mission to mindfully reduce the use of plastic containers and packets in his home. . This conversation is part of a series that explores how Go Native inspires change, big and small, in the lives of people. . #peopleofgonative #bethechange #iamlessplastic #sustainability #community #nativestories #gonative #livenative

Anvitha and Nikitha met at Go Native when Dori signed on to become one of our brand partners. It was a partnership that swiftly transitioned to friendship based on a desire to bring about tangible sustainable changes in communities and Nikitha soon came on board into the Go Native family. . Nikitha inspires Anvi to embrace slow living not just in personal actions but also in her approach to concepts and ideas. In Anvi’s words, “I have now learnt to accept that change takes time and sometimes that’s okay.” . As an entrepreneur herself, Nikitha drew inspiration from how Anvi shaped Go Native’s sustainability story. Nikitha says, “Through constant action, Anvi shows me how social and environmental change can be a part of successful business.” . This post is part of the series inspired by the people of Go Native. Stay tuned for more. #gonative #livenative #nativestories #sustainability #sustainableliving #learningfromeachother #growingtogether
