The garden is providing ripe tomatoes daily now and I’m starting to swim in gorgeous cucumbers! I love growing a garden, the relationships you build with the plants is so rewarding! Today's garden-to-table project: use up these tomatoes, peppers, and tomatillos from last year's garden to make a pot of chili. That will give me more room in the freezer for this year's harvest. I'm thankful that my garden produces enough of these (and green beans, too) to last us from harvest to harvest for #yearroundgardening eating. 😊 *** #garden #plants #organic #green #gardens #plant #growyourown #homegrown #gardener #mygarden #foodinspiration #growsomethinggreen #gardenlife #organicgardening #urbangardening #suburbangarden #midwestgarden #vegetables #veggies #growyourownfood #gardenadventures #harvest #gardentotable #farmtotable #freezermeals

😀 This year, I let Roman pick out a pack of seeds that HE would like to grow. He picked mini yellow bells peppers 💛🧡💛🧡💛 he planted the seed, helped me top it when it was ready, and then helped get it transferred into the garden! It's LOADED with little peppers and today the first pepper was ready for him to pick!! I wish you could have seen his little face light up when he first saw it! THIS is my top reason for gardening. Having my children be a part of the whole process from seed to table. They help with weeding and watering and get to enjoy what comes from the work! Now I have a VERY proud little boy gobbling down HIS reward from HIS plant 😊😊😊

This single short hollyhock was a nice surprise that popped up toward the front of my cottage style garden. I didn't plant it there! 🌸 Meanwhile the winter sown hollyhocks that I planted rather late at the back of the bed have hardly grown at all. Go figure! *** #garden #green #plant #gardener #mygarden #greenthumb #growsomethinggreen #gardenlife #instagardenlovers #instagarden #midwestgarden #garden_styles #gardenlove #gardenadventures #gardeninspiration #gardendesign #landscaping #landscape #instaplant #flower #flowerstagram #floweroftheday #flowersofinstagram #wintersowing #nofilter

I climbed up on our mini homemade watertower for this attempt at capturing the bean trellises this year, but a decent documentation photo of it all still eludes me. @ewokerson needs to get back out here with his drone I guess! Still can't really see the third trellis in this shot but the one my shadow is cast on is around 9 ft tall to the horizontal beam and the span is around 20 ft. Need to add another vertical brace soon to the center of the cross bars as the weight of the beans is gettin real! Maple sucker poles for structure and twine for the beans to climb. The garden can compost the whole structure once it dies. My wife @dubaye designed this and sowed the beans (many form beautiful seed saved from last year) and I just gotta say how happy I am to be learning all this with her! #reskilling #beans #midwestgarden #heirlooms #permaculture

Innocenza' (Jean-Nicolas Lémon, 1854) ❤️ I ordered this in 2015 and have patiently been tending it, it struggled for the previous grower, and she sent me the biggest part she could,(last photo). I was so happy when I finally found a bloom stalk this spring, then they just kept appearing, I ended with 10. 🤯 I made a trip every morning to check on the nights progress, I must say I have a soft spot for this little 💎. The oldest catalog description seems to right on point with this one, From Wing Seed catalog, 1919: "INNOCENZA — Late. Pure white with bright golden-yellow crest; style arms white. The only coloring on the divisions is a very slight veining of violet and brown at base of falls. A delicate and lovely little flower. Twenty-six inches tall. #innocenza #historiciris #historicflowers #historicirispreservationsociety #iris #garden #midwestgarden

Plumeri Collected, 1830. A hard to describe, wild hybrid, so I’m going to list the original description. .. From Cornell Extension Bulletin 112: “Color effect a brilliant, vinaceous-lilac self. Standards light vinaceous-lilac, slightly more bright. Falls a more brilliant Matthews’ purple, veined reddish brown.” “This plant is of moderate growth and has lax, medium foliage and numerous flowering stalks. Its many, well-rounded, smallish flowers are of good substance and fragrance.” #historiciris #iris #irises #historicflowers #midwestgarden #iowa #historicirispreservationsociety

I spotted this little bee buzzing around me while out checking the garden. This is the best photo I have, he was moving to fast and I was afraid to move to much and miss him. Anyone know what kind of home they like? #bee #beehabitats #midwestgarden #iowa

Awhile back I shared my mama’s garden in our IG stories. Well we’ve been harvesting squash! So much squash!💛Steve and I work 85-90 hours a week, and never dine out due to Celiac + allergies.😬We do our best in our lil condo kitchen. Scroll to see @gustusvitae smoked salt and mama’s squash have a quick love affair!😏 • We sliced up the squash and coated it in EVO, then sprinkled on alder smoked sea salt. No other seasoning required! We baked it at 375 for 30 minutes. Score! An inexpensive, easy side dish! • This post is about awesome salt! It is sponsored by @vitacost in partnership with @gustusvitae and we were happy to work with them on this!😍 • Purchase Gustus Vitae non-GMO salts and seasonings for a discounted price on Vitacost, and if you’re like us you’ll be delighted that the tins are magnetized and will stick to your fridge! Helpful for those living with tiny kitchens devoid of spice cabinets!😉 #vitacostvip #midwestgarden #organicproduce #gustusvitaesummercookout #condoliving

Found this beauty of a butterfly enjoying the lantana. I plant annual lantana in an area of the rock wall that refuses to grow any kind of perennial. The lantana grows super fast in the heat and attracts lovelies like this. #lantana #butterfly #midwestgarden #rockwallproblems

The Japanese beetles are wreaking havoc on our rose blossoms and really any blossoms in the garden. No rose blossoms until the onslaught is past. Hopefully in in another couple of weeks. June and July are our best months for gorgeous roses, but the beetles are ruining it for us all. Plucking them off the plants is all one can do. . . . #gardenpests #roses #midwestgarden #heatwave #prayingforrain

Remember my freezer cleaning project? Here are some of the veggies I found from last year's garden. These are the ones I got enough to last from one year's harvest to the next: green beans, tomatoes, tomatillos, and beets. Not pictured are the remaining jalapenos, basil pesto, garlic scape pesto, and tomato herb sauce. *** #garden #plants #organic #green #gardens #plant #growyourown #homegrown #gardener #mygarden #foodinspiration #growsomethinggreen #gardenlife #organicgardening #urbangardening #suburbangarden #midwestgarden #vegetables #veggies #growyourownfood #gardenadventures #harvest #gardentotable #farmtotable

Our front yard, actually our whole yard 😂, needs some love. I want to turn this area into a native perennial and pollinator friendly bed. Swipe to see a rough outline. We are planning to put a privacy fence up starting at the corner of the house on either side of the deck. #permaculturenoob #permaculture #midwestgarden

Argent (Forbes 1882) .... Another of my Old beauty’s I almost lost, this “originated in Hawick, Scotland, at the Buccleuch Nurseries. Established by John Forbes, Buccleuch issued long list of current and older irises through the 1930’s.” It was considered a ‘medium blue’ at the time of introduction, but it looks more blue-violet compared to newest ‘blue’ introductions. .... Madison Cooper (Fryer 1919) .....This strong grower had a slow start, (as its first home was too wet and I almost lost to soft rot) but two seasons in a new home and He has settled in nicely. ......This iris is named after a man who was a charter member of the new American Iris Society. He published a magazine titled ‘The Flower Grower’ for 10 years, “announcing horticultural shows and events, asking for and receiving gardening advice, horticultural advertising, poetry and gardening stories. Each issue of the magazine contained a page or more of A.I.S. reports, iris name registrations and news in addition to articles on iris types and culture.” .....A full article on Mr. Cooper can be found in ROOTS, Vol. 16 Issue 1, Spring 2000. #Madisoncooperiris #historicflowers #historiciris #midwestgarden
