I can't believe it's already been a year since I traveled to Germany and Austria, and I'm even more in disbelief that I'll be back in Germany next week.
Almost every person who learns about my lifestyle responds with some level of envy, immediately followed by an explanation of why they could never do what I do... and, frankly, it pisses me off. It seems like such a cop-out. It's just excuses from someone who is afraid to do more than dream.
I am fully aware of my privilege: I am able-bodied, I received an education that led me to a career and financial stability, and I have security and support within my family and friendships.
But I also worked /really/ hard to get to where I am. These people try to tell me that they can't travel internationally 2 years in a row because they're married, or they can't live in a van because they have kids, or they can't leave their job for something more flexible because they have too many responsibilities, or they can't afford to travel at all because they have to pay for X, Y, and Z.
The way you live your life is (privilege aside) a direct representation of your values. It wasn't a cake walk achieving this lifestyle. I decided over 3 years ago that this was where I wanted to be, and every decision I made from that day on was with this goal in mind. I made a lot of sacrifices and jumped head-first into a lot of unknowns to get where I am. Most of the paths I took were the ones that worked best for my situation. There is no one path to achieve a goal... you MAKE it work for you. Opportunity does not just land on one's lap. You seek it out and force your dreams to become a reality.
You CAN achieve the life of your dreams. It will be hard and terrifying at times, but if you prioritize your goals and truly work toward them, then whatever your dream life looks like IS doable for you - I promise.
I'm not special... I have responsibilities and personal ties and financial burdens just like you. The only difference is that instead of saying "I wish I could" I said "I will."
