“Get your ass to the observation deck!” He grabs his camera and runs back out. Disoriented, I sit up and look out the porthole. What I see changes me forever. The icy spectacle of the Antarctic stretches out in front of our very eyes, emitting an eerie glow under a distant full moon. This is the thing with this place: you think your interest will peak eventually, but in reality, every time your eyes wander across the frozen landscape, another sight emerges from somewhere and you find your jaw dropping anew. Not rarely, the most rewarding experiences are wildlife encounters, and so it is with childlike wonder that everyone aboard our ship observes a family of orcas swimming past our vessel the next day. .
