HAPPY WORLD ORANGUTAN DAY! The one day that I actually bother to write a caption 🙈
Everyone knows I’m obsessed with these amazing animals and I was lucky enough to go to Borneo last year and see them being rehabilitated. Swipe to see.
Some estimate that orangutans could be completely extinct by 2025 and over 100,000 have been killed in the last 16 years.
The Bornean and Sumatran rainforests are the oldest in the world and not only home to the endangered orangutan but a pygmy hippo, Sumatran tiger and forest elephant - who are all under threat as well. Illegal logging and palm oil are to blame and while we’re up against huge corporations that farm the oil, it’s completely our choice not to use the products. Palm oil is used in makeup, toiletries, chocolate, biscuits, peanut butter - it’s a cheap alternative to using other vegetable oils. It can be listed as palm oil or palmate, palmitate or palm kernel oil. Sometimes companies are sneaky and even list it just as vegetable oil. But it’s the most evil ingredient and not only is it destroying the homes of these animals but it’s stripping Sumatra and Borneo of lush rainforests that will never grow back - farming essentially leaves these areas barren and infertile. So not only do the animals suffer but the communities will be left with useless land for just a short term gain. There are so many charities you can donate to (even money that goes to the RSPB filters down to Borneo) but the most important thing is to just completely eliminate this ingredient from your diet and lifestyle.
It would be a very sad world to live in without orangutans and teeny tiny hippos running around. ♥️♥️♥️
