Monday Motivation 👊⁣ ⁣ Give this lower body, upper body 🦵💪strength super set a blast 🏋🏻‍♂️ Well technically it's not a super set it's peripheral heart rate training if you're asking but who cares it's tough and it gets you going. ⁣ ⁣ 1. DB Front Lunges ⁣ ⁣ +⁣ ⁣ 2. Weighted Pull Ups⁣ ⁣ Top tips:⁣ ⁣ Racking DBs in front makes the core work hard. But alternatively you could hold by your side. ⁣ ⁣ If you can't do pull ups, use assisted pull up machine or a resistance band or perform negatives. Monday motivation...I had every excuse this morning not to exercise and go to bells class this morning. I have had a rough night with wee Haribo teething (his night was worse 4 teeth coming in at once 😬). It was raining and I would have to walk to class. I am tired and a 5am alarm clock wasn't what I wanted to hear. I still have some pain in my SI joint. I feel like I have been hit by a steam roller after jumping about a muddy field dancing to @foofighters. However I got up, I went and I am ready to take on a new week. Thanks to recent team building activities in my workplace, I’ve been reflecting on elements of my past... and this video of my leg day finisher is a fitting metaphor 😬 I spent all my teens & most of my 20s not living a “normal” life. I had an illness called M.E/CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome). 250,000 people in the UK have a diagnosis of M.E and a crude calculation estimates approx. 17million people in the world 🌍 Sadly the extent of disability that ME causes continues to be poorly acknowledged. For those not familiar with ME, a recent study by Kingson et al used anonymised clinical data collected from people with M.E. and MS (a similar but recognised illness) and assessed how their illnesses affect areas such as employment and income; finding that “people with M.E. were ‘measurably more disabled’ than those with MS, work fewer hours and have lower incomes.” This comparison actually makes me rather uncomfortable, to the point I debated mentioning it at all in this post, as I feel it can (albeit unintentionally) come across as diminishing the absolutely terrible impact of MS. So let me clarify, my only reason for referencing the study is to give some context that despite the wealth of evidence about how debilitating M.E is, it’s not recognised to the same extent that other similar conditions are 🤔 Back to the metaphor. I’ve spent the past decade not talking about those dark years; wanting to almost forget them. But I’ve been reminded that often what you feel you are shamefully dragging behind you like a heavy weight, is what has made you strong. Maybe it’s time to put that strength to good use. My experience certainly defined a large part of my character today, and it sickens me that after a decade we’re still debating the credibility of the condition. Lunges are an awesome exercise to tone the muscles of the lower body. You can target hips, glutes, and thighs all in one simple motion. When they start to get too easy, you can always grab some dumbbells and make the exercise more challenging. They can be done at home, because you don’t have to do walking lunges. In other words you don’t need a large space, because you can simply perform your lunge and return to the starting position before switching legs and repeating. Lunges can be performed in a small space. Backward lunges, or rear lunges, contain all the benefits of regular lunges, but they are safer for those exercisers with past or present knee pain. Here is a list of the benefits of backward lunges and how to do them properly: Safer for knees. Backward lunges are safer for the knees because it’s much easier to emphasize the muscles of the glutes, hamstrings, and quads. The pressure is reduced with backward lunges compared to regular lunges, as the tendency with forward lunges is to get the knee too far forward and over the toes. More emphasis on glutes. Backward lunges help you focus more of your work on the large glute muscles, and who doesn’t want stronger, larger glutes? Dynamic movements. 💅🏻Getting haters kinda post :) Ok, I’ve been holding myself, but here I come: 👎🏽It doesn’t matter if you feel a good pump, you won’t grow your glutes using bands. 👎🏽 Pump feels good, but it doesn’t mean muscle growth. ✔️As a warm up (before you start training!!), ok. ✔️As a rehab exercise or to try to fix a misalignment, great. ✔️As a therapeutic tool, of course. ✔️Adding it while doing another lift, sometimes. ✔️Pumping before stepping on the stage, sure. ❌But band exercises can’t be your workout! 👉🏽And if you use those bands in between your sets... sorry, you should take the break instead and go harder on your next set!🤙🏽 That will grow your muscles. Day 2 of #RunnersLoveYogaLEGS19 demonstrates one of my favorite things about yoga: the transitions between poses and the sometimes surprising ways you can get from point A to point B. Today is parivrtta anjaneyasana, or revolved lunge, which is a very interesting point B between yesterday's revolved chair and a Warrior II facing the opposite side of your mat. A couple bonus tips for today's pose: 1️⃣. reaching through your back heel helps your back leg stay strong. 2️⃣. just like yesterday, use your elbow pressing into your leg to help your twist! This will especially help right after you've stepped back from revolved chair to revolved lunge. You can use your elbow to help get your twist back if you lost it a little in the transition. Today's sequence: 1️⃣. Set up chair pose just like you did yesterday, and take any variations you like: up and down on toes with inhale/exhale as we did, or side to side in the revolved version a few times. 2️⃣. Cross left elbow over right thigh to come into revolved chair. 3️⃣. Shifting more weight to your right foot, *mindfully* step your left foot back to revolved lunge. This takes some balance! Take your time and keep breathing. 4️⃣. Optional: ➡️ open arms wide as you did yesterday for revolved chair. ➡️ very optional (note I have long arms!): go for the bind by sending left arm under front leg (you can use right hand to wedge it under there if you're close), sending right arm up and around your back, and connecting hands behind you. 5️⃣. Pause for a breathe with hands back in prayer in your revolved lunge. Then (fun part!!), release your back heel and pinwheel arms open to the left side of your mat in Warrior II. 6️⃣. Pause in Warrior II, then pinwheel arms down to the front of your mat, step back foot up to front foot, set up your chair pose again and begin on side two! Repeat as desired! Squats and lunges increase strength, stability, flexibility, and balance which means they can improve our performance in sports and normal day to day activities. Both of these exercises are functional, so one should not think in terms of perfect 90° angles when performing these two exercises as rarely in day to day activities or in sports will we maintain perfect angles. This does not mean to neglect good form such as keeping shoulders back, chest out and core tight during this exercises of course.
