Today’s episode is a veritable hot-topic pie. We revisit last week’s episode by talking even more about powerful women in history as well as women today making history. We discuss the merits of California’s anti-plastic straw law, gush about Daylight Saving Time, marvel over the migration of millions of monarch butterflies, and update our stories on Coco Chanel and Jane Fonda with facts. Gasp. Then we “rrrrrrrrrrrrrr” hard-right turn straight into a rant and FREAKING rave over the Lori Laughlin/Felicity Huffman/college admissions scandal (so much so Kris runs out of air mid-sentence). Then we wrap it all up with a spoonful of St. Patrick’s Day trivia. All the while wondering about the large amount of construction taking place below us during the entire episode. Question of the day: IS the construction downstairs actually the cover-up of a murder scene? You’ll just have to listen to find out. But first? Kym quacks us up with a mom-joke. . On Tuesday morning, it was reported that actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman, along with more than 30 other wealthy parents, had been charged with fraud following an investigation into a massive college admissions scam. ⁣ ⁣ College is a place that theoretically should be grooming students to become adults who are responsible for their actions and are attempting to do good with their higher education. A college education truly doesn’t mean anything if it doesn’t teach us the rights and wrongs of the world.⁣ ⁣ This is the largest college admissions scandal to ever be uncovered. The fact of the matter is that there were students better qualified to get into these universities, yet they never had a fair chance because they didn’t have the financial resources. And that’s not what college admissions should be based on.⁣ ⁣ _____________________⁣ #authenticity #love #selfcare #selflove #mentalhealth #college #loveyourself #magazine #inspiration #write #motivation #lifelessons #girlpower #quotes #writersofinstagram #collegeadmissionscandal #oliviajade #lorilaughlin #college #usc #harvard #yale #admissionscandal

#utalk2us College-Admissions Cheating Scam At least 50 individuals were charged in connection with the alleged scheme – some with famous names – including popular actors, wealthy parents, a fashion mogul, corrupt college coaches, bankers, top-tier lawyers, standardized testing officials and even a best-selling author of parenting books who’ve made the headlines for their roles in the college entrance exam scheme called Operation Varsity Blues by the FBI. In order for parents to get their kids in the best schools, there was lying about ethnicity, phony sports profiles and pictures taken of a student’s face and put it on someone else’s body. The bribery scandal also included students writing answers on a separate sheet of paper then the proctor would bubble in the correct answers on SATs. A Newport Beach businessman, who owns a college prep company, is the ringleader of the controversy. He orchestrated behind-the-scenes bribes to various people involved in the college admissions process. Social media lit up with disbelief and frustration. "This makes me sick," one person wrote, tagging both actresses who were charged, in her tweet. "I see how hard my kids have worked to get into their preferred colleges. The spots these people have bought, takes away spots for those students who truly deserve it. These parents should be ashamed of themselves." "What a slap in the face for people who are waitlisted, or people who are academically smart but can't afford college," wrote one Instagram user. "Rich privilege truly is a thing. U didn't even have to go to college, u can afford not to." Amber, one of our interns, commented, “It’s not fair. Kids who have the qualifications and have the ability to accomplish great things are being denied the opportunity to go to their dream school because there isn’t room.” Many believe college admissions have long favored the rich at the expense of the poor. Do you agree? Have you or someone you know been denied entrance to a top school because there’s no room? Talk to us about what you think should happen to those involved – including the students. And give us your thoughts on how these bribery scams can be curbed.

Now you KNOW I just had to turn this scandal into a CAUSE/EFFECT lesson! The students were all about it. We watched a news clip from CNN, read an article, and students had in depth discussions about the MANY EFFECTS one cause can have! Their discussions were awesome 🤗 . Here's one of the many things I heard in their conversations➡️ Student A: "If they're already rich and they can afford college, why did they do this???" Student B: "It's called GREED" 🤯 . . ⭐The article is from NBCNews.com. You can actually get it on any news website. On the 12th, 50 people were charged in a multimillion dollar scheme that helped students bribe their way into elite colleges and universities all over America. According to US prosecutors, parents, most from prominent careers in law, medicine and finance, paid over $25 million to schools, teachers and coaches in order to falsify or change test results, athletic skills and even learning disabilities to place their kids into universities like Yale and Stanford. Students’ parents sent money to SAT administrators or school coaches that would change the students reports, allowing them to attend universities they would previously be unable to get into. This scandal, though exposing the illegal lengths parents go to for their children, also sheds light to the legal ways that wealthy parents grease their children’s application. For example, Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, attended Harvard after his father made a $2.5 million donation, despite being a “lacklustre” student in high school. Do you think that children of wealthy or notable parents are more likely to be accepted into universities? What are your thoughts on the difference between higher and lower class students and the factors that affect the likelihood of getting into universities?

The college admissions bribery scandal caused shockwaves around the country about the lengths that people will go through for education. Indeed, the situation is reprehensible. - But let us use this time of outrage to honor the heroes who sacrificed their blood, tears, time, and limited resources to open the door to equal education in the United States. We say “open the door” because the goal of educational equity has not yet been realized. School desegregation did not create educational equality between Black and white students—either at the K-12 or the college level. In 2019, schools are more segregated now than they have been in many years, and a combination of school funding policies with a racially disparate impact as well as flat-out unequal allocation of educational resources will help to maintain the racial status quo in education for the foreseeable future. - These trailblazers of the civil rights movement knew that change wouldn’t happen quickly. Education inequity is in fact still an issue in their lifetime. Let’s not forget, Brown vs. Board of education (the Supreme Court case that desegregated schools) wasn’t that long ago. Ruby Bridges, the little girl who bravely desegregated her elementary school while having to be escorted by federal marshals, is only 64 years old today. But they all knew that education was worth it. These students and their families played the long game to pave a way for those coming behind them. @scholarly_pursuits thanks them for their courage and sacrifice. - In light of the ridiculous bribery scandal, we are choosing to honor the Black heroes who had every VALID right to receive a quality education in the first place but were still willing to pay for it with things that are impossible for us to place a value on— things that they can NEVER get back on their own, and things that can never be repaid. - People have always been willing to go through lengths for educational pursuits. The difference is that some are heroes who are fighting the racist, classist foundation of education. Others are elitist opportunists who are actively participating in the system of inequality by using the foundation to their advantage.
