Natarajasana - Lord of the Dance
In Hindu mythology, Nataraja is a depiction of Lord Shiva as a cosmic dancer. Shiva, as the destroyer, is in charge of turning the world into dust so that another world can be created. For Lord Shiva, change happens in the blink of an eye. Every second is, at the same time, death and rebirth. Shiva, the destroyer, has to do his work in order for Brahma, the creator, to do his job.
Natarajasana teaches us that nothing is permanent. We are constantly changing and transforming, even sadness and happiness are just temporary. This Asana makes us work with our fears by focusing on back bending and balancing at the same time. Both actions can be scary, but that fear is released by opening our hearts (through the bend). Natarajasana asks us to open our heart, and to find balance and flexibility, because only by achieving these can we accept the constant changes in our lives.
