This week on #AMAFriday - ❓Do you prefer graffiti with stories to tell or colourful murals?
🔸 #AMAFriday is a day dedicated to you where you can Ask Me Anything on my travels and on #MyCityMyTown London. If I do not know the answer, I will endeavour to find the answers for you. 🔸I’d just mention here that couple weeks ago on #AMAFriday , there was a request by @this_adorable_world for a list of vintage boutiques in London. I have a list but I would like to visit a couple of them so I can give you some valuable feedback. I hope to do so soon, Albina - thank you so much for your patience. 🔸To guide our discussion today, the topic is Graffiti.
🔸As you know, the past couple of weeks I have been posting on the historic Tower of London. The Tower represents so much history that just draws me to explore more & more. On my recent visit, I discovered the Beauchamp Tower (BT). Just as the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula, I don’t think many people know of this Tower either. Do you? 🔸Well, the Beauchamp Tower is actually most famous for its graffiti! It was built between 1275-1281 by King Edward I and was used primarily as a prison for high-ranking and important prisoners. There are inscriptions on the walls made during the 16th and 17th century, (Pics. 3 & 4)notably that of the Dudley Brothers / the young 17 yr old Lady Jane Grey who was Queen of England for 9 days. It tells of stories of the prisoners and their thoughts. The Tower is named after its first prisoner, Thomas Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick. 🔸The Tower as a state prison evokes images of underground cells and poor treatment of prisoners but I discovered that their treatment and fate depended very much on their crime and social status. Some of them had comfortable beddings, servants and could move freely within the Tower grounds. 🔸❓Do you prefer graffiti with stories to tell or colourful murals like this guy in Pic 5?
🔸Pic 1 - Look out for this area within the Tower precinct when you next visit for the Tower Chapel and BT. 🔸Like this post, ask any questions you may have and share your thoughts in comments below ⬇️
