“So the next time you encounter fear, consider yourself lucky. This is where the courage comes in. […] The trick is to keep exploring and not bail out, even when we find out that something is not what we thought. That’s what we’re going to discover again and again and again. Nothing is what we thought. I can say that with great confidence. Emptiness is not what we thought. Neither is mindfulness or fear. Compassion—not what we thought. Love. Buddha nature. Courage. These are code words for things we don’t know in our minds, but any of us could experience them. These are words that point to what life really is when we let things fall apart and let ourselves be nailed to the present moment.” 👤 @anipemachodron 📖 Learn more: Chödrön, Pema. “Playing nice” comes naturally when our neuroception detects safety and promotes physiological states that support social behavior. However, prosocial behavior will not occur when our neuroception misreads the environmental cues and triggers physiological states that support defensive strategies. After all, “playing nice” is not appropriate or adaptive behavior in dangerous or life-threatening situations. In these situations, humans—like other mammals—react with more primitive neurobiological defense systems. To create relationships, humans must subdue these defensive reactions to engage, attach, and form lasting social bonds. Humans have adaptive neurobehavioral systems for both prosocial and defensive behaviors. What allows engagement behaviors to occur, while disabling the mechanisms of defense? To switch effectively from defensive to social engagement strategies, the nervous system must do two things: (1) assess risk, and (2) if the environment looks safe, inhibit the primitive defensive reactions to fight, flee, or freeze. By processing information from the environment through the senses, the nervous system continually evaluates risk. As evolution has proceeded, new neural systems have developed. These systems use some of the same brain structures that are involved in defense functions to support forms of social engagement. Neuroception now may encourage the development of social bonds and provide the opportunity for reproduction.” 📖 Learn more: Porges, Stephen W.. Having a koi fish pond in our backyard gave us firsthand experience of how ecosystems really function, beyond any theories or textbooks. One thing we’ve learnt is that the integrity of an ecosystem cannot be messed with. Everytime we added or removed elements to/from the ecosystem we ended up with a hair raising cascade of events that were disastrous to say the least. For example chlorine that is added by the municipality to the tap water that we use for filling the pond aggravates the fish and they start jumping out, with a few landing on the walkway. You can imagine our heartbreak. Or forgetting to add specific types of bacteria to the water, completely disrupting the pond’s nitrogen cycle, resulting in sudden spikes that are deadly to the fish. On the flip side, if there isn’t enough ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, it’s the aquatic plants that suffer. Indeed, the pond’s ecosystem functions as an integral whole and all its elements depend on each other for their health and survival. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We’ve learned our lessons the hard way. We now always consider what would happen to the entire ecosystem before making any decisions regarding the pond. We now also think of our roles in other living systems we belong to (our households, families, work environments, neighborhoods and cities) and how our discounting of the contributions of any member of these systems will eventually result in imbalance and chaos. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #simpleliving #beauthentic #gracenotperfection #hashtagauthentic #thehumaneffect #authenticliving #thehonestlens #itsthelittlethings #designyourlife #designthelifeyoulove #designthelifeyouwant #beaware #thechoiceisyours #souljourney #wisechoices #livingsystems #systemsthinking #sustainability #sustainabilitymatters #sustainableliving #sustainablefuture #pond #pondlife #koi #koifish #nishikigoi #mydubai #dxb #دبي

“The prevailing brain-disease model overlooks four fundamental truths: 1) our capacity to destroy one another is matched by our capacity to heal one another. Restoring relationships and community is central to restoring well-being. 2) language gives us the power to change ourselves and others by communicating our experiences, helping us to define what we know, and finding a common sense of meaning. 3) we have the ability to regulate our own physiology, including some of the so-called involuntary functions of the body and brain, through such basic activities as breathing, moving, and touching. 4) we can change social conditions to create environments in which children and adults can feel safe and where they can thrive.” 👤 @bessel_van 📖 Learn more: Bessel van der Kolk M.D.,The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma. A few pictures of hiking Mount Leconte the other day. • • • • This was my first time being on top of a real, tall mountain. And as I stood atop scanning my eyes across the clouds and trees, it struck me how perfect all of it is. How marvelously harmonious nature is. That conflict on one level, is harmony on a higher level. On a lower level, bears eating deer and vultures eating carcasses looks like chaos. But on top of the mountain, you can see how marvelous all the violence, unpredictability and death surmount up to. • • • As it is in all living systems, conflict on one level is harmony on another level. • • • • • #nature #anthropology #livingsystems #photography #mtleconte #hiketenessee #hiking #blog #hikingblog #natureknows #views #smokymountains #mountains #forest

Applewood Residential PDC 2018. 🌳🌳🌻👩🏻‍🌾🐝🐞🦋🐏🦌🌲🌱🍒🥦🧘🏻‍♀️⛺️I’ve been meaning to do a Permaculture Design Course for over 5 years now! For me it was always the financial aspect holding me back mixed with life commitments. This year was going to be different, I made the time and created opportunities to make it happen. Even though I’ve been actively in the movement for many years, my education was mainly practical from ‘Wwoofing’ on Permaculture projects. This course gave me the opportunity to finally join all those dots together and fill in the gaps. Having spent most of my professional career (10yrs) working as a fast fashion and print Designer (before quitting the industry) I was particularly excited about using my creativity as a force for good in the Permaculture Design challenge👩🏻‍🎨 and the world at large!! Being at applewood in the beautiful Herefordshire hills surrounded by utopic apple orchards and magnificent forests 🌳 I couldn’t help but feel connected to the land. This unique place gave me the creative freedom to express my ideas and self in a nurturing and nourishing way. The blend of teaching techniques coupled with three very diverse teachers makes this course particularly unique. From reading 📖 Permaculture and People by Looby Macnamara I new I had to be on a PDC with Looby. Then when I learnt about the other two teachers on the course it was an easy sell: Chris Evans who’d been working for over 20 yrs developing Permaculture projects in Nepal. (A place very close to my heart) and Tomas Remiarz author of Forest Gardening in practice. The dynamic blend of these three teachers wisdom is amazing... A month on and I’m still reflecting and digesting everything I learnt during my time at applewood. This place brought out the best in me and others and I hope to continue down this path! I can’t wait to get stuck in to another Permaculture Design amongst other ideas I have! #openforbuisness #urbanpermaculture #permaculture #pdc #applewood #design #patternsinnature #permacuturedesigner #creativity #sustainabledesign #nextchapter #livingsystems #culturalemergence #urbanpermaculture @permaculture_uk @permaculturemagazine

The power of your meaning >> Since the subject matter is systemic thinking, I find it justified to start from a far-away dimension: Of the 7.5 billion people who make up the Earth’s population, every single individual contributes with her/his unique values to the way our world is shaped. This goes for you too. How? We all have our own functional place in the systems of the world, and its distinctive meaning - the constellation of our personal history, events, experiences, concepts, observations, customs, ideas and hopes - that we perceive and share with our communities as our #reality. In this unique space, which is only yours, you contribute to the processes of your #life in a constructive fashion, with your unique approach, new points of view and pioneering ideas. Due to the #interconnectedness of our current times, and with the help of networks you can easily extend your #ideas and implement them, thus you can actively contribute to the permanent #change of the world as a system creator. The open #networks of our lives enable the implementation of any outlandish idea in the framework of common #value creation processes, which can contribute to the improvement of our fast-changing world. Take any dimension of your life - family, relationships, free time or work; as a system creator your idea expressed in a #narrative can be applied by a committed #community , which develops and realizes it in a common #action. The business and professional communities undergoing #transition are looking for chances to renew themselves within the framework of the ‘new economy’, and thus to connect to the new opportunities of the #future. They are in pressing need of new perspectives and dynamic images, - which can take shape in communities, and encourage them to #act for the #common #good . These perspectives and images build value creating #work processes, which produce important professional #meaning and #business value for the benefit of the #world. 📖Read more: liligulbert.com #️⃣ #systemsthinking #livingsystems #somatictherapy #systemiccounseling #systemicchange #inspiration #motivation #design #architecture #mentalhealth #wellbeing #change

This young #loquat tree usually attracts #aphids when it puts out tender new leaves. I tend to just leave it alone- the leaves harden up pretty quickly and the bugs don't end up doing too much damage. I have experimented with spraying #capsaicin 🌶 water to keep them under control. But mostly we just wait for the #ladybugs to show up and do their thing (which is to devour the aphids). It might take a week or more for them to find the infestation, but as long as you don't spray anything nasty they will come and consider it an all-you-can-eat buffet. I found this guy earlier today, told him he was just in time. 🐞 #naturalpestcontrol #predatoryinsects #organic #ipm #aphidsbegone #permaculture #livingsystems #donothing #foodforest

“Man cuts out for himself a manageable world: he throws himself into action uncritically, unthinkingly. He accepts the cultural programming that turns his nose where he is supposed to look; he doesn’t bite the world off in one piece as a giant would, but in small manageable pieces, as a beaver does. He uses all kinds of techniques, which we call the “character defenses”: he learns not to expose himself, not to stand out; he learns to embed himself in other-power, both of concrete persons and of things and cultural commands; the result is that he comes to exist in the imagined infallibility of the world around him. He doesn’t have to have fears when his feet are solidly mired and his life mapped out in a ready-made maze. All he has to do is to plunge ahead in a compulsive style of drivenness in the “ways of the world.” 📖 Learn more: Becker, Ernest. I have these groovy cards (kinda like flashcards) from Toby Lynn Herzlich of Biomimicry for Social Innovation. They talk about applying nature’s wisdom to our social change work. To restructuring leadership and organizations as living systems so they are more effective. To making organizations function as living systems based on the principles of life so they are creating conditions conducive to life for all life. Human, more-than-human. All of us. While sorting the cards by category (I’m nerdy like that sometimes) I realized that the category with the most cards was, by far, “Cultivating Cooperative Relationships.” Have I mentioned lately that empathy is a highly sensitive, body-wise superpower? . We already have the knowledge we need to cultivate social change that creates conditions that create life. It’s humming in our bones. Singing in our blood. Our job? To get radically present, listen, choose life-affirming action and do it. . .. ... find the cards at http://bit.ly/2OLhZsN . .. ... #biomimicry #learningfromnature #socialinnovation #makeadifference #changemaking #ecosentience #bodyofbusiness #businesscoachingforwomen #livingsystems #naturewisdom #bodywise #hsp

The only world we humans can have is the one we create together through the actions of our coexistence. A synthesis of neurobiology, philosophy, systems theory and cognitive science that has implications for our understanding of human consciousness and understanding of ethics in a new way that could be beneficial to the survival and further evolution of the human species. As a pragmatic systemic strategist, I find it dangerous to build organizational development concept for phenomena like ‘wholeness’.I want everyone to be able to experience the wholeness in her life more than once. And yet, I'm aware that we can reach this state of existence through the hell of traumas. It could be extremely destructive to facilitate a deep individual work like this within organizational context. On the other hand,it can be deceptive to offer such a deep systemic development as "boxed products" to organizations. It causes serious damages on the individual level. In the context of life, it is a beautiful systemic work - for both, the client and counselor- to help a person to experience ‘wholeness’ in her life. But these developments are beyond the traditional systemic consultancy framework. ➡️ Read the full conversation on Twitter: @liligulbert #️⃣ #shiftthelogic #systemsthinking #systemicchange #organization #development #wholeness #livingsystems #pragmatic #life #consultancy #systemiccounseling #psychology #neuroscience #neurophysiology #mentalhealth #inspiration #motivation

We have built gardens all over the west. Some came easily on flat valley loam. Some took more effort. This garden, on the flanks of King Mountain has been an epic challenge. A large space on steep terrain and serpentine soil. Our neighbor scoffed at the idea of us attempting this project and said "good luck growing anything on that serpentine hillside" his words became like a mantra to us over the past 3 years of building the garden. In the first two years we witnessed the roiling of life as the hillside began to awaken and we experienced many challenges and doubt. We could write a whole book on describing that experience! But now, in our 3rd season, we are seeing the health, vigor and abundance of a united ecologically intelligent space. We are filled with hope and purpose through this experience and want to do our best to share its message with the world. We can transform this planet.
