Today my daughter and my mum came with me to work. My little one has begged for months to come along to one of my talks but most of them are abroad so hasn't been possible. But today @building_green_ the doors were open for people all ages. So she and my mum sat in the front. I talked about the 3 levels of learning from nature that are essential if we want to make people come alive and eco-systems thrive in our cities and built-environment. Design from within. How biomimicry, circular economy, wholeness, inner sustainability, biopholia, self-organization, consciousness, purpose, bio-inspired innovation are all pieces of the same puzzle we must bring together collectively. The talk was in English which my daughter don't speak yet but I can recommend involving our kids (and parents too;-)) more in our work and passion. They understand so much and her reflections afterwards were to die for😍 #bringyourkidstoworkday #regenerators #livingsystems #regenerativedesign #sustainability #architecture #regenerativearchitecture #biomimicry #circulareconomy #keynotespeaker #speakup

What better plant to highlight on #halloween than this gorgeous Sedum telephium also known as "Autumn Joy"? Typically a rosy pink color, by late Autumn the flowers have turned to this dark copper-red hue as they prepare to head into Winter dormancy.

I’ve been talking a lot lately about the most basic goal of life - to keep living. Our nervous system evolved to help us do that, to be aware of those things which threaten us and those which continue our lives. We seek protection to defend from threats. If there is no threat, there is no need to protect. If we feel safe, we can open up. Gradual opening helps us to feel safe. . . . Thanks to @themovementmaestro for the post. Keep up dispensing the wisdom and knowledge!

How can conservation shift to keep up with our rapidly changing world? On December 6, 2018, an interdisciplinary panel of experts will challenge and inspire thinking on how traditional conservation approaches can integrate principles of systems theory to protect nature and people in a complex world. The event, presented in collaboration with National Geographic, is free and open to the public. It will take place at the National Geographic Society's Grosvenor Auditorium in Washington, D.C. The symposium will also be streamed live. . . . #fullersymposium #livingsystems #wwf #efn #educationfornature

The fields are so pretty right now with the splashes of green after a beautiful growing season. We are truly grateful especially at this time when the soil enters transition from giving life to so many heat loving plants to receiving the gift of rain and supporting a blanket of grasses legumes and perennials. #livingsystems #grateful

Fascinating visit to the largest collection of ants in the world, by multi-disciplinary Swiss scientist Auguste Forel, one of the grand men of science. For the first time on view at the Natural History Museum in Geneva @museum.geneve , which acquired this collection in 1922. He studied ants and their social behavior - how they relate to each other and ecosystems they inhabit together with us. Forel identified almost half of the 14.000 species of ants known today, and named many by the names of his collaborators, family and friends. His book “The Social World of the Ants Compared with That of Man” was published in 1928. Forel was a myrmecologist, neuroanatomist, psychiatrist and eugenicist, notable for his investigations into the structure of the human brain and that of ants. A welcome reminder, in the epoch of specialisation, that a man can excel in several branches of learning and multi-disciplinarity allows for new knowledge to emerge. ### #ants #augusteforel #socialbehaviour #organization #relationships #museumhistoirenaturellegenève #eusocial #eusociality #insects #ecosystems #biodiversity #livingsystems #systems #myrmecology #globalbiodiversityinformationfacility #fourmis #geneva #museumgeneve

Great exhibition about ants and their social behavior at @museum.geneve - how they relate to each other and ecosystems they inhabit together with us. There are over 14.000 species of ants worldwide. As eusocial insects, they follow the highest level of organization of animal sociality: cooperative brood care (including care of offspring from other individuals), overlapping generations within a colony of adults, and a division of labor into reproductive and non-reproductive groups. (Image: Nest by Camponotus maculatus, species of carpenter ant). Until January 6. Check out www.antweb.org about all ant species in the world. ### #ants #socialbehaviour #organization #relationships #museumhistoirenaturellegenève #eusocial #eusociality #insects #ecosystems #biodiversity #livingsystems #systems #globalbiodiversityinformationfacility #fourmis

Notes from the field from @rwallack : “Through my work I have extraordinary opportunities to learn from people with deep knowledge of their craft. Time and time again I am awed by the value of these experiences. . Today we spent most of the day with a man who is regenerating chestnut-culture in his region of France. Why does this matter? . Because tree-based agriculture (aka Agroforestry) is a necessary component of human culture. Every culture (excluding the arctic) that has lost touch with agroforestry has collapsed. Every culture that has forgotten that it is nested within living systems, that it is a living system, has eventually collapsed. How we re-integrate tree crops into food systems is not the only question we need to answer, but it sure is an important one! . All of these pictures are from Morvan and Ardeche, two major chestnut regions in France. France was producing 220 millions pounds of chestnuts annually in 1900, and now just 10 million. There are likely 70,000 acres of grafted trees that are largely unmanaged in the country. Re-engaging with those acres alone could likely produce as much as 200 million lbs of food. With the appropriate design and support these systems could also significantly increase the water-holding capacity and drought resilience of this landscape, draw down millions of tons of carbon in soil and biomass, and reinvigorate a rural economy. . This opportunity is not isolated to France. This is both global and local. Comment or DM if you want to discuss what this looks like in the place you call home.” . #castanea #chestnut #chataigniers #castaNation #agroforestry #drawdown #watershed #carbon #regeneration #climatechange #livingsystems

Context for all of my chestnut posts 😏 . In case you haven’t figured out from my stories recently, I’m back posting on Instagram, but I’m focusing all my posts on chestnut production and agroforestry. Through my work I have extraordinary opportunities to learn from people with deep knowledge of their craft. Time and time again I am awed by the value of these experiences. Often, like right now, I cannot sleep after those visits. I am not only filled with new knowledge, but more importantly energized by the integrity of true craftspeople. . Today we spent most of the day with a man who is regenerating chestnut-culture in his region of France. . Why does this matter? It matters because tree-based agriculture (aka Agroforestry) is a necessary component of human culture. Every culture (excluding the arctic) that has lost touch with agroforestry has collapsed. Microbes are tiny forms of life that surround us – too small to be seen by the naked eye. They are found not only in the body of a human or animal but also in water, in the soil, and in the air. Introducing beneficial microbes in any living system’s microbiome will ensure that healthy microbes dominate disease-causing microbial populations and promote growth, health and life. . . . #microbes #bacteria #beneficialmicrobes #beneficialbacteria #life #livingsystems #cleanup #planet #earth #healthy #healthcare #probiotics #probioticbacteria #green #saveourplanet

Material futures is fungus or mycelium materials. We all know that all we need to create a textile or leader is protein. Protein sources now focus on living materials. Leather-like materials or fine silky textiles now the focus is to rethink sources and challenge is to create biodegradable materials.
