The average woman will apply up to 9 pounds of lipstick in her lifetime and swallow 30 percent of it; 65 percent wear lipstick daily and 40 percent own more than 20 different lipstick tubes.
About 30 percent is swallowed when you lick your lips and eat.
Do you know what you are eating?
Tallow is a common ingredient. It's made from animal carcasses. Tallow is made by rendering animal fat, which means boiling the carcasses to create fatty byproducts. The dead animals used to make tallow come from many different sources, including labs, slaughterhouses, zoos, shelters, and yes, roadkill.
Cochineal dye from Cochineal Beetles has been used for centuries, and it is very safe for most people, so it is commonly used in lipstick.
In the report "Heavy Metal Hazard: The Health Risks of Hidden Heavy Metals in Face Makeup,"19 Canada-based Environmental Defence tested 49 different makeup items, including five foundations, four concealers, four powders, five blushes or bronzers, seven mascaras, two eye liners, 14 eye shadows and eight lipsticks or glosses.
Their testing revealed serious heavy metal contamination in virtually all of the products:
96 percent contained lead
90 percent contained beryllium
61 percent contained thallium
51 percent contained cadmium
20 percent contained arsenic.
I could go on!
Why, oh why do we keep buying this stuff. There are pure, safe products from companies who lay their reputation on the purity of their products. They may cost a little more but instead of buying 20 crappy lipsticks, just buy four great ones.
