In breaking news, the Amazon is burning.
It’s fucking devastating.
The destruction that is being caused is perhaps incomprehensible and more than has been seen in this lifetime. Species may be completely wiped out. Indigenous peoples lands may be decimated. Ecosystems, homes, the lungs of our planets, gone.
But here’s what this is not. This is not Notre Dame, so stop fucking comparing the two. (Notre Dame also is not, I’ll have you note, Sudan)
When Notre Dame finished burning, and actively burning it stopped fairly quickly, a contractor could go in, assess the damage, and put a price tag on what it would cost to rebuild the place. That money was raised.
This world is fucking awful, shit is burning and breaking and crumbling every day and we don’t know how to fix or what to do or how much it will cost. So when it’s something simple like a beloved cathedral and we can say, ‘o.k. I’ll pay $X and that’ll do it’ that gives us some amount of closure, some amount of relief and shut eye in this burning crumbling world, and that is not a bad thing. In fact, I believe it is a wonderful thing. Because we cannot, I cannot, process the extent of the damage that the Amazon disappearing will have on our world. I cannot process so many of the awful things that go on every single goddamn day on this planet. And that does not mean that I will ignore those things. In fact I will do everything I can to save one damn tree, or one damn toucan, or one damn sloth. But don’t ever, ever make me or anyone else feel guilty for putting their efforts into a cause that is good, just because it is not the best one, the biggest one, or the one nearest and dearest to your heart.
The world is fucking burning. Don’t make anyone feel bad about throwing water on their corner of it.
