There is no such thing as cheap fashion - someone or something somewhere is paying for it! All industries need to be taking action today to stop the climate crisis, and if fashion sits back and doesn't change something, the fashion industry will account for over 25% of the world’s carbon budget by 2050.
Business need to take responsibility for their impact on our environment and people's human rights. They must be working to reduce the consumption of fashion by ensuring their clothes last longer, are easily repaired as well as stopping the idea that we need new clothes every season. We need to be working internationally to stop the dangerous conditions, long hours and horrendously low pay that so many garment workers are forced to survive with.
As is highlighted by the new Environmental Audit Committee report, governments need to legislate to create the standard that business should operate to.
Across all sectors we must be working to promote reducing, repairing, recycling and re-purposing our items. Advertising and business push us to buy more without recognising that we have finite resources on this planet, and this push for consumption needs to end.
Business and governments need to work to promote a circular economy, helping us turn waste into new products and reduce the number of virgin materials used.
As consumers we have to make sure we speak out against this toxic industry. That doesn't mean stopping loving clothes or dressing to impress, it's about buying less, buying from sustainable sources and charity shops or even creating clothes swaps between your friends and colleagues.
importantly we must continue to put pressure on business and governments to take responsibility for the environmental destruction and abuse of human rights of the industry.
