Hello, in continuation of the @grownintotnes takeover of the @landworkersalliance account we wanted to tell you more about some of the brilliant farmers which @grownintotnes works with to grow grains which we process in our Totnes mill into groats, flours and flakes! Pic 1.) Shows @biodynamicuk farmer Marina O’Connell at Huxhams Cross @apricotcentre talking to a @grownintotnes group about her wheat crop. Pic 2.) Farmer Jon Perkin, who as well as producing delicious goats milk, icecream and more @dartingtondairy has been growing a heritage wheat population for us on the @dartingtonhall estate. Pic 3) We feel that an important part of our work is helping the food businesses and community members who use the local grains we mill to meet the farmers who grew them, here is @thealmondthief and @greentablecafe nibbling on wheat fresh from the field @dartingtondairy at one of our recent events. We couldn’t mill local flour for our community without our supportive farmers! #localgraineconomy #heritagewheat #gtain #ukgrainlab #takeover #transitiontown #foodsovereignty #landworkersalliance

How times flies... how late summer compares to early spring. One of the original growing spaces @growers_schumacher , the Hazelip is now our wild & wonderful garden for perennial vegetables, experimental annuals, visitors in search of peaceful solitude and ducks having a splash. It’s a little chaotic at times (aren’t we all) and is one of my all-time favourite places at Schumacher College & Dartington. Overlooked by Martin Crawford’s 20 year old forest garden and the Elmhirst’s much loved redwoods, it really is a garden of sanctuary. Visitors welcome - come & say hi! Until then, that’s it from me @ionemariarojas TTFN 👋 #timeflies #beforeandafter #perennialvegetables #dartington #hazelip #redwoods #schumachercollege #mandalagarden #landworkersalliance #permies #gardensofsanctuary #showusyourveg

What is Permaculture? 🌲🌲🌲 The term was phrased from 'Permanant' and 'Agriculture' in the 70's by Australian founders Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in efforts to revolutionise modern day farming methods and in hope to restore natures' balance. 🌲🌲🌲 Permaculture has come a long way since then. Thousands of practitioners across the globe have instinctively heeded the message, setting up over 10,000 eco-communities, managing small holdings, community led gardens, organised events, festivals, convergences, workshops and even begun to tackle such topics as World Governance today! 🌲🌲🌲 I can envisage Permaculture having so many uses but which essentially it sets the framework for conscious and efficient human actions. Each and every practitioner will generally have their own interpretation too, working from different angles, but it also grows and evolves. 🌲🌲🌲 @burnett.graham (one of my outstanding idols/role models) is a time served Permaculture practitioner based in South East England, UK. Graham is one of the leading figureheads in #veganicpermaculture around the world. 🌲🌲🌲 The picture is from Graham's Introduction to Permaculture weekend workshop at #dialhouse near Epping a fortnight ago. 🌲🌲🌲 What is Graham's definition of Permaculture? 🌲🌲🌲 '...one that is particularly useful might be: "creating sustainable human habitats by following nature's patterns".' - from The Vegan Book of Permaculture (published 2014) by Graham Burnett. 🌲🌲🌲 Permaculture can help all Earthlings greatly. Would you like to know more? Get in touch and I can help to share some enlightenment. I'd also like to invite you to follow Graham's incredible work! 🌲🌲🌲 - - - #permaculture #organic #vegan #grow #growyourown #allotment #ethics #ethicalfarming #ethical #veganlife #whatveganseat #veganfood #veganactivist #vegansofig #veganrecipes #community #essexlife #londonfood #activist #socialism #future #peoplepower #landworkersalliance #freedom #greenfingers #greens #forest

Modern industrialised farming methods greatly impact so many Earth factors at present, including the environment, animal "welfare", wildlife habitats, health and nutrition of soil, water, food, air and very much us - humanity! There are quite some number of problems caused to each and every factor, which I'll try to uncover/highlight in upcoming posts, but for now, is there any sign or hope for a better future? I wholeheartedly believe #veganicpermaculture has the solutions! It will, however, require everyone to join the growing communities to make better, designed and conscious decisions for a world where we are all effectively reversing our impact to a positive outcome on this shared planet. This is quite easily attainable by all, with the right mindset and energy focus. If you're interested to find out more, please get in touch. I can offer you links to introductory resources, events and upcoming workshops from permaculture practitioners from London - UK - Worldwide. #earthcare #peoplecare #fairshares

I’m not quite sure how or when it started but one day I ( @ionemariarojas ) became known as the chicken lady... It’s true that I am a fan of poultry. Chickens, ducks and geese are such incredible characters to work alongside and I’ve seen them add so much to land-based projects. Often seen solely as producers of meat and eggs, these birds bring humour, comfort, entertainment and education to us human folk. At @growers_schumacher we invite students to sit with the chickens and observe their behaviour before discussing how they fit into our growing system. At @stepneycityfarm I used to invite older adults from local residential homes & day care centres to help us care for our chickens. Incredible conversations often followed about different husbandry techniques, wartime evacuation experiences & cultural attitudes to animals. @drawntomedicine now runs the project #wearefurrytales and I continue to draw inspiration from it. As questions loom over the future of agriculture and farming in the UK, it seems more important than ever to explore the benefits of farming beyond just food production - the positive impact this work can have on our health & wellbeing is a good place to start. #chickensofinstagram #carefarming #socialfarming #animalassistedactivities #landworkersalliance #ducklings #womenwhofarm #greencare

Today it’s all about the grains! Inspired by @heritagegrain I’ve been experimenting with smallscale grain growing, trialling out population wheat, spelt, einkorn (pic 6) a modern variety ‘skyfall’, naked oats, sweetcorn, popcorn & a selection of wheats from the John Innes Centre seed bank (pic 5), plus some of the ‘pseudo grains’: amaranth, quinoa & buckwheat. It’s been fascinating watching them grow, seeing what survives varying weather conditions & harvesting - before our mice & pigeon friends eat them all! Follow me @ionemariarojas for updates when we start baking with the goods! Thanks @growers_schumacher @oxfordrealfarmingconf @grownintotnes @uk_grain_lab @andrewgilhespy for your support & inspiration! #grains #heritagegrain #growyourown #wheat #populationwheat #foodsovreignty #landworkersalliance #womenwhofarm

Hi everyone! I am @ionemariarojas and I’m a horticultural intern @growers_schumacher , where I help grow food across 7 acres of productive organic gardens, following sustainable and agroecological methods of production. I often work on more than one project at once and enjoy working with communities, the land and the arts (in various guises) to explore ideas around connection and communication. As a fairly new member of the Landworkers’ Alliance, I appreciate the power of grassroots activity and the way in which all members and supporters are invited, encouraged and supported to add their voice and skills to debate and action. @katebowman___ and I decided to set up this LWA Instagram takeover account after the desire for it became clear at this year’s Southwest regional gathering. Creating and opening up spaces for people to share stories and learn from each other is a big interest of mine, so it’s been a joy to see this account grow over the past few months. I’m excited to add some of my interests and happenings to the mix this week! #landworkersalliance #morefarmers #morefarmersbetterfood #farmlife #schumachercollege #womenwhofarm #sustainablehorticulture #permies #agroecology #foodsovreignty #totnes #showusyourveg

Roots, shoots, flowers, food, fibres, fuel... go on, show us your wares! If you’re a LWA member or supporter and would like to show the world what smallscale farming and land-based work means to you and your livelihood, then get in touch. We’re looking for more people to takeover this account for a week at a time. Huge thanks to @endiva_thegrowerchefess @katebowman___ @felixkary_ @sparry_hoons for inspiring us with their work this past month. If you’re not a member or supporter yet, why not join us? We’re a grassroots union of people who make their living from the land - producing food, fuel, fibre - using sustainable methods of production. We’re members of La Via Campesina, the international peasant farmers union and campaign for the rights of small-scale producers and family farmers. Morning all, its the last day of my #instagramtakeover for the LWA! I'm going to start the day with some shameless self promotion... I ( @sparry_hoons ) teach bowl carving, spatula carving and spoon carving through the @thegreenwoodguild at Bristol's newest centre for arts @estateoftheartsbristol. Carving green wood is a beautiful thing and its therapeutic nature is often commented upon. Morning all, hope you are well on this fine day! So I ( @sparry_hoons ) took the time the other day to explain where I get my wood from, I thought today I'd do a brief explanation of what green wood working is. So once you have the wood, you can cut it to the desired length with a saw and then cleave the log. All green wood working projects start with splitting a log along it's fibres. This, in theory, creates a beautifully strong product because you are working perfectly with the grain of the wood. Once you have the piece of wood split to the right size you can then start shaping it. One of the other founding principles of green wood work is razor sharp hand tools. With a sharp tool and fresh wood you can get a fantastically smooth finish with no need for sandpaper. Obviously, depending on the product you are making depends on what tools you would use, but to name a few: axe, knife, adze, chisel, gouge, scorp, auger, and so it goes on. And that's it really, it's how we've worked wood for thousands upon thousands of years and why should we stop now? This is the #newwoodculture. The photos are of @redwoodchairs Windsor chairs. It's a fine example of the exceptional quality you can achieve with green wood and hand tools. I feel very privileged to be working alongside him this weekend @makemorefest. #London #greenlondon #greenwoodworking #woodworking #windsorchair #furnituredesign #sustainabledesign #handtools #handmade #makersgonnamake #makemorefest2018 #landworkersalliance #instagramtakeover

Hello, @sparry_hoons here! After giving a brief intro yesterday I thought I'd start at the beginning, where I get my wood from. The last couple of days I've been contracted in to fell larch, they are being felled to thin out the woodland, open up the canopy and allow light to get to the woodland floor which is beneficial for biodiversity. Once the timber is extracted it will be milled up to be used for carpentry work. There is an abundance of wood in this country and yet we continue to import timber with the risk of spreading diseases to our native trees! Over the winter months I manage a couple of plots of woodland. I coppice Asham Woods with @somersetwt near Frome and am thinning Bristol Memorial Woodland. This then gives me enough wood for green wood working and traditional coppice products such as bean poles, firewood and charcoal. Cutting down trees is not a bad thing if its done in the right way. It's an incredibly empowering process to be a part of. #landworkersalliance #instagramtakeover #woodlandmanagement #coppice #greenwoodworking #woodworking #sustainability

This week I'm doing an Instagram takeover of the Land Workers Alliance page @landworkersalliance so I might be a bit quiet on here! If you don't already know about the LWA you should check it out, it's a collective of people who do land based work, from agriculture to forestry and fishing. It's an inspiring community to be a part of and they're are trying to make real change to post Brexit Britain and the way we relate to our homeland. #landworkersalliance #instagramtakeover #greenwoodworking #woodworking #handtools #handmade #sustainabledesign #makersgonnamake

Viva!! 👩‍🌾👩🏻‍🌾👩🏼‍🌾👨🏽‍🌾👨🏾‍🌾👩🏿‍🌾 Dee and Rita were part of the Landworkers’ Alliance farming feministas gathering last weekend hosted by Kate and Ruth at Fresh and Green Farm ( @vegetable_dalliance ) in Devon. With over twenty farmers attending it was an incredible space to share knowledge and skills from tractor maintenance and appropriate technology for agroecological food production to bicycle repairs; from feminist poetry reading to learning more about the work of peasant activists in La Via Campesina. The gathering was autonomous, DIY and self organised. We explored food, farming and living in rural communities; feminism and intersectionality; and solidarity and social justice. It was fertile grounds for much to spring forth from going forward! Up next a feminist farming manifesto?! #southernrootsorganics #landworkersalliance #foodsovereignty #laviacampesina #farmingfeministas @vegetable_dalliance @vital.seeds @chagfood @shillorganics @organicleacommunitygrowers @schoolfarmcsa @growers_schumacher

Work now begins in earnest on the commissioned documentary we are making for The Guardian and James Rowntree Foundation. I’m really excited to be directing and shooting this and working alongside producer @rebeccamday and editor @simonsylvester_ to release in 2019 through The Guardian’s web channels. The film will follow two young conservation trained farmers as they establish their new business over the course of a year here in the Lake District. As a society we are increasingly disconnected from our food and those who produce it. This means it comes cheap, but at what other cost? - A farming industry in which people are often underpaid and undervalued, one with worryingly high levels of poverty, poor mental health and suicide. And this all happens among the valleys and fell sides of our most cherished rural areas, including our national parks. Our film will look at some of the systemic problems within farming but tell a different story – one of hope for the future and a new way forward. We will be sending out updates on the story as we go, so keep checking back! @lakedistrictcumbria @lakedistrictnpa @igerscumbria @igerslakedistrict @ntlakedistrict @reallakedistrict @lakedistrictpr @lakedistrictcumbria @lakedistrictnationalparkguide #thelakedistrict #lakedistrict #farming #conservation #conservationgrazing #sustainability #environmentalsustainability #sustainabilitymatters @kendalsustainability @kendalmountainfestival #environmentalist #environmentmatters @landworkersalliance #landworkersalliance #folk #landrights #protest @gownintotness #farmingcumbria #farm #cumbria #lakeland #fromlakelandwithlove @fromlakelandwithlove #madeincumbria #cumbrialife @cumbrialifemag @theguardian @newsandstar #newsandstar @sheffdocfest #sheffielddocfest #jamesrowntreefoundation #ukdocumentary #creativedocumentary #bts @nfulife #nfu #nationalfarmersunion

Indigo . A deep love of fermentation, rich colour, making my own clothes and blues of all hues led to working with indigo as often as I can. . Often using indigo itself to get those amazingly bright blue grains of colour, I have also experimented with woad and brewed vats of all different shapes and colours . Pure magic, it's a way of dyeing that is genuinely alive, that although ever so slightly temperamental is easy to try at home, and that develops like a photograph from a kelpy green to a full bodied blue. . A real love letter to indigo and the earthy, rooted method of dyeing cloth, clothes, spoons (just the handles), and fingertips (though not on purpose!). @katebowman___ #everydaymaking #landworkersalliance

Such an exciting and stimulating evening last night @bristoltextilequarter with @inourhandsfilm. Thanks to all who came and for being part of this conversation and to @antiformonline @botanicalinks @tamayandme @bristoltextilequarter @bristolcloth for bringing us together. So many great conversations and learning's to take away from the film and local food production and how we can apply that to fibre production in the UK. It was brilliant to have Humphrey from @landworkersalliance there, and think we all left inspired - and with a sense that it is all possible when you come together and collaborate. #localproduction #organicproduction #fibregrowers #fibrefarm #farmersrights #landworkersalliance #localtextiles #localfashion #collaboration #community #bristoltextilequarter #bristolcloth #inourhands

Oh yes I managed to capture one of the last bits of green grass in our lawns! Normally mowing and strimming takes up at least 1 day every week, but this is the first time we've mowed this month...the grass growth is completely stunted due ro lack of rain and the weeds are beginning to take over, so keeping them topped today. Luca, who finished our apprenticeship in the spring and is continuing to work with us, has been strimming the banks in the woodland. Our new apprenticeship vacancy, to start in September is advertised on the @sharphamtrust website. Come and work with us!
