Mustardssss 4 days One of the most nutritious leafy green vegetable. They contain more vitamin A, K, caratones and flavonoid antioxidants than most other fruit and veg. Native to the Himalayan planes of India. Commonly cultivated for of course it’s leaves but also it’s oil since ancient times. Hopefulness... We all need a bit of that, in a world that seems hell bent upon destroying itself, one way or another.. Lady Farm Hack is just one reason to be cheerful, happening for the third year running here at Hoppins Field in August.. A skill sharing act of feminine farm working solidarity.. And so much more (cake) besides.. Properly known as the Women's Farmworking Weekend (but who said we had to be proper, I don't know??)... It's a foc self organised event, open to women, and femme identifying, land workers and food activists... 🙏🌱❤️When I first proposed Lady Hack, rather out of nowhere three years ago, I was a bit nervous about even vocalising the idea.. Surely we don't need single gendered events like this in our (supposedly) equal modern age.. But the response _ particularly from younger women, was overwhelming positive, as have been the outcomes, that's why we're doing it again.. .. If you are involved in practical agroecology, or food sovereignty issues, and would like to be involved, then message me here, and we can let you know more details, dates etc. We would love for this to become a model to be taken countrywide, the appetite is keen for deeper knowledge, practical skills, and support, how to work together, how to work differently, practical actions we can take towards a fairer food system, that doesn't hack the planet to pieces, in the process. 🙏🌏❤️💜🌍👣 #ladyhack #farmfemmes #womenwhofarm #landworkersalliance #agroecology #skillshare #growfood #growwell #toolingup #craftskill #machinery #workshops #sharedknowledge #hope #activism #oneplanetaction #womenwhofarm #deeperaction #lotsofloveandcompost #yogaforfemmefarmers

Absolutely shocking weather this week, we’ve spent most of today at work covered in wet sloppy manure, digging it from a farmyard manure heap, barrowing it, and spreading it. But we managed to build a couple more beds for some more peas and beans, as supervised by our rare breed sheep flock. . . . #ecologicalfarming #peasantlife #modernpeasant #simplepleasuresoflife #slowpacedlife #growyourown #growyourfood #growvegetablesnotlawns #smallscalefarming #smallholdinglife #marketgarden #marketgardening #landworkersalliance #rarebreedsheep

Snowball Turnips. Grown with seed from @theseedcooperative These are a new crop for us this year and we paused a while in the field and the rain today to taste and admire them. So sweet, dense and crisp all at once. We’re taking 44kg of vegetables to market tomorrow, that’s a lot more than we had this time last year, and feels like a pretty good place to be as we leave the hungry gap behind and head straight into summers’ abundance. What we bring to market is food grown 20 minutes away from Bridport, with organic and no-till principles driving our growing practice. Food that we’re aiming to make fairly priced, accessible and affordable. We’ve all got to eat — and we’ve all got a right to good food too.

Nigella sativa One of the oldest species known to be used, they were found in Tutankhamens tomb and are mentioned in the bibles Old Testament. The tiny black seeds this flower produces have a slightly bitter flavour with some pungency of onion... as somebody coming from the home of the balti and tikka masala (Birmingham), I know this seed well as that which adds the finishing touch to my naan as well as other Indian and Middle Eastern dishes. And of course the flower s very much edible and a beautiful addition to the flower beds at the farm. . . . . . #horsepoweredfarm #horsepoweredfarming #sustainablefarming #organicfarming   #flourishproduce #britishfarming   #marketgardener #marketgardening #sm #cambridgecountryside allscalefarming  #londonchefs #cambridgechefs   #freshproduce #britishproduce #landworkersalliance   #vegetables #edibleflowers #flowers #cutflowers #garden #flowerbeds

At Glebe Farm in Pitney, Somerset, Anna Barrett ( @theannaseed ) produces organic vegetables, meat and eggs. Why does she farm? "I am happiest when I am outdoors, working with my hands, and sharing good food with friends and the wider community." It's also important to her to be part of a wider movement like the LWA; "Sustainable farming requires a radical transformation of our food system. The LWA acts as a peer support network and lobbying union for small scale land-based workers so that we can have a louder voice when sat in the same room as the big shouty world of Agri-business. Being a member of the LWA gives me more leverage as an individual and connects me to small scale land workers across the globe, some of whom I have got to know through La Via Campesina network of LGBTQIA land workers. Our Achocha plant reaching for the sun! The South American achocha plant is one of this years farm experiments... once it’s grown a little more it will start bearing its cucumber-like fruit. A flavour crossed between a minty cucumber and a green pepper. When fully mature the fruits are known as the ‘stuffing cucumber’ as they become hollow with seeds forming around the central placenta like a green pepper 🥒🥒🥒 . . . . . #horsepoweredfarm #horsepoweredfarming #sustainablefarming #organicfarming   #flourishproduce #britishfarming   #marketgardener #marketgardening #smallscalefarming   #londonchefs #cambridgechefs   #freshproduce #britishproduce #landworkersalliance   #vegetables #cambridgecountryside #southamerica #southamericanfood #achochoa

Humphrey Lloyd from @edible_futures in Bristol grows a range of salad, vegetables and herbs. "Farming is the process of mixing labour with the land to produce food. Its been the basis of all economic systems for the past 11,000 odd years. At Edible Futures we are attempting to connect our local community with this most fundamental of economic practices by bringing them healthy, delicious food. Being part of the Landworkers' Alliance means being part of a social movement that is transforming our food system from the bottom up. It means connecting with other farmers, processors and food lovers to change not only the way we farm, but also how we distribute, share and relate to food." #landworkersalliance #landworker #smallscalefarming #newentrants #nextgeneration #whywefarm #meetyourfarmer #knowyourfarmer #foodjustice #foodsoveriengty #agroecology #viacampesina

First bunch of our overwintered carrots harvested. These guys are going to be sweeter than your average carrot due to being in the ground during our colder months. The cold temperature forces the carrots to turn their starches into sugar in a process called ‘chill-sweetening’. It’s kind of like natures anti-freeze. The carrot produces these sugars in order to protect its plant tissues from freeze damage in a bid to stay alive…leaving us with a carrot sweet like candy and way higher on the Brix (sugar) scale than the average summer harvest crop… Best get me some hummus!! . . . . #horsepoweredfarm #horsepoweredfarming #sustainablefarming #organicfarming #flourishproduce #britishfarming #marketgardener #marketgardening #smallscalefarming #londonchefs #cambridgechefs #freshproduce #britishproduce #landworkersalliance #vegetables #cambridgecountryside

Cucurcubits coming along well, particularly the F1 hybrid Amoro. We are using 3 different hybrids in our squash patch as they are bush varieties which are planted at half meter spacings and should help us make the most of our small cropping area (half an acre). Freedom... Yesterday The UK government finally accepted the urgent need and called a National Climate Emergency.. 🌍❤️🌏 Freedom comes in many forms, but the primary freedom, must be freedom to exist.. Right now, many species, and peoples on our home planet, are having that most basic right, threatened or denied.. 🤔This small step is only the beginning, there is much to be done, and it needs doing quickly, but also with care, intelligence, and in cooperatively minded good heart.. 😊 Our freedom to peacefully protest, has in part, brought this long standing issue, more quickly to the fore .. 🐘Very glad to have been a tiny part of it, and will continue to help where I can...🌱🌱 Our freedom to roam, was also hard won... Remember the Kinder mass trespass?? It wasn't the gentrified landowners who kindly offered the right to tramp in the wilder places.. That was claimed as a right for all people, through the courageous collective action of a few.. 🙏 And looking forward also, in a few weeks to some more northerly tramping in the wilder places too..🏞️ But first a little more farm work... 🏡 #climateemergency #freedomtoprotest #responsibility #actnow #inourhands #backpackinglight #scottishhills #righttoprotest #righttoroam #remembering #radicals #lotsofloveandcompost #landworkersalliance

Only a week ago.. The iconic pink boat is now gone from Oxford Circus.. But such a strong symbol - named for Berta Cacares, the murdered Honduran environmental activist.. And a focus for so much positive action, and peaceful protest.. Extremely impressed with the whole organisation of the XR movement.. All types of people from all backgrounds, coming together as a positive force for change, and spreading the word with love and compassion... Showing solidarity with people from across the globe, who are already suffering from climate disruption.. After years of inaction, maybe, just maybe there is some hope for change, exciting times, and can't wait to see what these beautiful people have up their sleeves to keep up the pressure.. Sail on XR.. Proud to be a part of the crew. 🙏💜💚👣👍 #peacefulprotest #extinctionrebellion #climateemergency #civildisobedience #ifnotnowwhen #womenforclimate #agroecologyforclimate #solidarity #laviacampesina #landworkersalliance #stillhope

“Peasants are the ones who are standing up to a rise of facism”. As Landworkers' Alliance and members of La Via Campesina today on April 17th, International Day of Peasant Struggle, we stand in solidarity with our powerful compañeros, compañeras, campesinos and campesinas all over this earth who are on the front lines defending a way of life that has and still is been destroyed by imperialism and capitalism and are everyday building a more beautiful, harmonious and just world we all know is possible. Today, April 17th marks the International Day of Peasant Struggle to remember the 19 peasants of the Landless Rural Workers Movement of Brazil who were murdered in 1996 in the “Massacre of Eldorado dos Carajas”. That day, tens of police officers attacked 1500 landless peasants in Eldorado dos Carajás. Since then, every April 17, there are thousands of demonstrations around the world to pay homage to them and commemorate the International Day of Peasant Struggle. The rights of peasants cannot be substituted by public policies based on the interest of the global market and agribusiness. We denounce this model that not only marginalizes our peasant and small scale farming communities but also appropriates our rights, common goods and lives, in the name of productivity and for the development of the capitalist system in the countryside. In the UK we see these issues raise their heads over and over, often in less obvious ways but still our small production is threatened. This year, La Via Campesina, one of the most powerful movement in the world has called thousands of members and allies to unify actions of struggle at global level, stating that “the only way to obtain Peasant Rights is with Agrarian Reform and Social Justice”. ❤️✊🏾 #viacampesina #landworkersalliance #peasantsrights #april17 #solidarity #resistance #agrarianreform #farmersknow

So today is #april17 , a day to be aware of and celebrate the huge movement of small producers and peasant farmers that together feed between 60 and 70% of the worlds population. Why today? Well today is International Day of Peasant Rights, and to celebrate that I’ve written a piece for the incredible Edible Network on how we are all, as allotment holders, back garden food growers, community gardeners, part of this movement. One of the most critical dimensions of food sovereignty is mutual aid and international solidarity at the grassroots level. With the Landworkers’ Alliance we have just been in Kilreekil, Galway, Ireland supporting the launch of a vibrant and passionate new small scale farmers union Talamh Beo (Living Earth) who are organising to support land based workers across Ireland. They are in the process of becoming the La Via Campesina member in Ireland. It really was humbling and energising to reflect on the power of La Via Campesina as a global movement in its endless capacity to inspire and support farmers in to action in rural farming communities across this earth. We then went to Belgium for the La Via Campesina Europe General Assembly. La Via Campesina Europe has over 30 members (including the Landworkers’ Alliance) across 20 European countries. The annual General Assembly is an intense four days of a womens and youth assembly, debates, political direction, and strategic meetings including how to progress Agroecology and Peasants Rights in Europe. As always this Via Campesina meeting felt like a big family reunion - the time, care and deep respect we all give each other in these spaces is immeasurable and provides the most fertile ground for resistance and organising. Viva La Via Campesina!! #landworkersalliance #viacampesina #talamhbeo #foodsovereignty #foodjustice #agroecology #peasantsright #solidaritybeyondborders #viacampesinafarmingfamily

Well that’s dinner sorted then! One of the huge benefits of working at a market garden is limitless Vege. And I mean I eat a lot of vegetables! People ask if you get bored of eating seasonal Vege, but to be honest we totally binge on what’s in season so that we don’t want it again for months. I haven’t eaten fresh tomatoes since November when we stripped the vines from the poly tunnel, but after eating my body weight in tomatoes all summer, I’m quite happy to wait until mid summer to have them again! Did you know you can change the variety of your apple tree without grubbing out and replanting? This is especially helpful in the orchards @ragmanslane as the Bramley's planted two decades ago are not a viable commercial crop. Today I used a technique called "rind grafting" to turn 30 trees into a variety called "Discovery" - an early desert apple which makes a delicious red cloudy juice. You could graft multiple varieties to make a family tree if doing in the garden. The method involves cutting back all but one branch, this ensures sap still rises in the tree. Scion wood of chosen variety is cut to fit a grove cut in the bark. It should be a tight fit and the Cambian layer in the bark and Scion should be in contact. The graft is then sealed with beeswax or grafting paste. The last photo shows a successful graft from about 3 years ago. #grafting #organicorchardmanagement #regenerativeagriculture #appropriatetechnology #appletree #orchard #rindgrafting #cleftgrafting #landworkersalliance #singlevariety #organicorchards
