At @harvestworkerscoop we run an education programme empowering people to understand more about our food system. We run workshops, host farm visits to our suppliers, talks and film evenings. Keep an eye out for what we have in stall coming up: permaculture design, soil biology, nutrition talks and the launch of our new film programme!

Last job on a #friday. Reclaiming an edge bed. @downfarmwinkleigh is a no dig market garden so we covered the bed (which has been lost to creeping buttercup and grass) with black plastic for 2 months. Before covering it had a fresh load of compost applied. Today I lifted it and weeded anything that survived, watered it and then passed over with our wheel hoe and tyne. Ready for planting on Monday morning! Happy weekend folk!

It’s @downfarmwinkleigh takeover week! We are Henry and Liv, and we run a no-dig market garden in north Devon. We grow veg on under an acre and sell in a 20mile radius of the farm, including to our cooperatively run farm shop @harvestworkerscoop. We have been #landworkersalliance members for three years and have been farming for five. It’s just us 2 here at the farm with our pigs, chickens and dog #cyndi. Stay tuned this week to see what we are up to and learn about how we farm! #takeover

In June we are planting out all of the brassicas for the winter period, squash, carrots and parsnips, as well as the cucumbers, fennel and celery which are in the protected cropping area. We have just cut and baled our first silage for the winter, the cattle have been put out to pasture on the Somerset Levels. The smallest (and cutest) tractor is helping dampen the weed burden by dragging spring tines over the top layer of the soil before we plant green manure herbal leys to increase fertility and improve soil aggregation on our extremely shallow majority clay and rock soil. In the shop we have new season potatoes, carrots, spinach, fennel, radish, beetroot, broad beans and salad for sale which are all so much more sweet and delicious than their poorer cousins that have been stored over winter. We are heading out of the hungry gap at last! The Pitney Farm Cafe is serving a delicious spring hungry gap menu of homemade sourdough pita bread, @hodmedods fava bean falafel/ farm produced organic lamb kofte, winter salad selection, carrot hummus, tzatziki and wild garlic pesto, which is certainly brining the customers back for more local produce and a good chinwag. @colourshapes @thepitneyfarmcafe #landworkersalliance #knowyourfarmer #morefarmersbetterfood #farmlife #localfood

Hello! I am a new entrant to farming and work full time as the grower and livestock assistant at Glebe Farm, Pitney. We are a 100 acre mixed organic family farm, set in South Somerset (about an hour south of Bristol), which has been run by the Walrond family for over 200 years. Most of our produce sells through our popular on site farm shop which stocks our organic veg and meat as well as other local produce. We also supply our on-farm café, and several local restaurants. I am a new member of the LWA and greatly value its political stance and that it provides a connection to other small scale growers across the UK and worldwide in what can be a difficult and isolated industry when up against the big guns of industrialised agriculture and the corresponding food system. #morefarmersbetterfood #knowyourfarmer #landworkersalliance #smallscale #fresh #food @thepitneyfarmcafe @colourshapes

It's hot work out on the fields in this weather. Spring is a tricky time for farmers, we need the right balance of a warm spell to dry out the land for planting, but then regular rain to water in the seeds and seedlings. On top of which it's "the hungry gap" where our stocks are low and the summer veg haven't come to harvest yet. Life is in some ways is very simple, but also very complicated when you rely on the land. www.simshill.co.uk #growlocal #eatlocal #supportsmallfarms #landworkersalliance #farmers #britishfarmers #planting #drought #hot

You want to ride my bicycle?? Having a clear out, Viking Saratoga tandem.. Used for commuting child to school, a few years back.. He's somewhat beyond that now..., Rear seat height would only suit a smaller adult, or child .. Needs quite a lot of tlc, new tyres, derailleur etc, hence willing to let go for a £70 donation to Landworkers Alliance.. That would pay for one of us to go to Westminster for the day to badger some politicians about the crucial importance of small farms, to our resilient food system.. Local sale preferred .. #bikeforsale #tandem #clearout #donation #ridemybicycle #comeandgetit #landworkersalliance #needssomelove #reuse #preloved #madefortwo #freshairandexercise

Very sexy cheese,... One of the many benefits of being part of a pan European Union of agroecological farmers.. When one of your colleagues travels to the Basque country, for some solidarity building, and then returns to furnish a meeting with this rather tasty morsel, of dairy deliciousness... Not available in the shops...Crafted on a small scale... But as the saying goes, there are two sorts of people that eat best in this world - Royalty, and the peasantry... Very good cider too 😊 Apparently 'errotik' 🌸 translates as deeply rooted.. Well yes, I can see how that works in both senses.. It's at times like these that I'm so glad not to be a vegan.. I mean frankly my darlings, what would be the point of going through life without delights such as this... Not all dairy is the same😇.. #provenance #sexycheese #agroecology #delightfuldairy #cheesedreams #foodporn #happycows #landworkersalliance #laviacampesina #eatwell #livewell #notthenfu #erotika #microdairy #understandthedifference #pleasantriesfromthepeasantry #beautyinsmallthings

So excited about our screening tonight of In Our Hands: Seeding Change; a documentary about people and groups in Britain looking to challenge the industrial food system and take back control. Made by Black Bark films and the Landworkers Alliance, it's an inspiring piece of work! We're showing it tonight, 6pm, down in the bandstand, with surplus soup, local stallholders, and a discussion afterwards. All pay as you feel. #aberfoodsurplus #inourhands #blackbarkfilms #landworkersalliance

Snaps courtesy of @benjaminpryor 📸 from our incredible feast at the Food Sovereignty Banquet earlier this week. We enjoyed courses from some of the most talented chefs in the South West, joining us from the notable @pocotapasbar @rivercottagehq @birchbs3 @delabristol and @theponyandtrap plus locally grown offerings from @ediblebristol @growbristol. After we were treated to a screening of #InOurHands , a film about food sovereignty. Produced by Black Bark Films and The Landworkers’ Alliance, the film tells the story of a growing movement of farmers and food workers who are creating vibrant local food markets and a fairer food system for all. From anti-GM to seed preservation, these farmers and producers from across the UK are tirelessly campaigning for our government to implement better policies to “bring back life to the soil, a fair wage to the farmer and a flavour to the tomato.” . In a time when the world’s second largest seed company controls 21% of the global seed market and we’ve lost 33,000 farms from our countryside, the future looks bleak unless we begin to actively resist industrial development in favour of a more sustainable food system. It’s time to reconnect people back to food and the land on which it grows. Watch and share → http://inourhands.film/

A couple of nights ago I was invited to an incredible Food Sovereignty Banquet. The evening was a celebration of great food from local producers, prepared by some of the most gifted chefs in the South-west. But importantly, the evening set forth a vision for a better food system – one that nourishes and cherishes the land, supports rural communities, and champions local farmers and producers, ensuring they receive a decent living for their skill, expertise and hard graft. This is an issue that sits close to my heart, and I’m a firm believer that our food choices can have the greatest impact, be that for better or worse. I encourage everyone to go check out ‘In Our Hands’, a short film that discusses these issues within the context of Brexit-Britain. Visit inourhands.film and landworkersalliance.org.uk.

We had an amazing night @delabristol last night, where chefs and food producers from across the South West gathered to watch a screening of In Our Hands, a brilliant film on food sovereignty - timely as the government draws up the agricultural policy which will define decades of farming following Brexit. The film was preceded by a mouthwatering banquet celebrating producers such as @ivyhousefarmdairy @growbristol @sleightfarm @streamfarm and featured a loaf made from @grownintotnes flour developed by @thebristolloaf and oat cakes using our oats by @birchbs3 .... so much nourishment for body and mind.
