Russell Westbrook is NOT the comparison for Ja Morant. I frankly think it’s a lazy one and one that should be scrapped immediately. NBA fans, we can do better.
Just because Morant can dunk over 7-footers, doesn’t mean he’s Westbrook. Morant’s a much more smoother player, who’s a lot more composed. All of Westbrook’s on-court problems are from the neck-up. He’s a wreck in situations where his team needs him the most, and psychologically unhinged.
Westbrook FT%- 65%
Morant FT%- 81%
They’re games are totally different. Morant’s much more efficient- 48%FG > 42%FG. As well as a much more gifted playmaker. He’s a lot smoother than Westbrook, who plays 100MPH and is out of control. Westbrook’s rugged and Morant’s smooth.
In addition, I think it’s unfair to compare prospects to Hall of Famers. We can compare their styles, but can we please end the “next-(insert hall of famer)” nickname? We compared Ben McLemore to Ray Allen, how’d that turn out?
That being said, Morant’s STYLE is a lot more symmetrical to that of Damian Lillard’s. I think a more accurate comparison for Morant as a rookie is Eric Bledsoe. Capable shooter, collected ball handler, and gifted passer, which jaw-dropping athleticism when you least expect it. Morant is a lot more skilled than Westbrook was when Russell first came into the NBA.
