a basic shading #tutorial 💜
I use procreate, but this technique came from sai and I also apply the same in photoshop
I use a medium hardness airbrush with minimum size set to about 60% and a spray brush (can be found in brush tip presets). see slides 5 and 6
1. adding basic colors. pick the average color for each area. here I color pick from the reference I'm using for a quicker process.
2. blocking in the shades. basically pick the colors that differ from the base, like shadows and highlights, and roughly paint them. there's no need to add a lot of them since the transitions between areas could be created with shading
3. shading with blend tool. carefully blend the edges of each color zone for a smooth transition. I continue to add some more colors I may have missed and blend them in.
4. adding details. the most important part is keeping the balance between smooth and rough edges. sometimes I would smoothen one edge of a stroke and leave the other untouched. sharp details like highlights give you a better look.
so basically you create shades by pushing colors with a blend tool 🙃 this is one of techniques I'm using and it works very well for any type of drawings
